Alright, since everyone is giving thier 2 Cents I'll throw mine in. If you really started her up in -20 the right on, bad ass truck. If you didnt then who cares. Its YouTube, not the Presidential Election.
i have a 04 and it was -45 this year with the wind chill and the odd time i forgot to plug it in it started just as good....but i plug it in or leave it running on high idle just because its easier on the motor
LOL This vid is always going to be a pissing match lol.
I think that since there is such debate, you need to take another vid of this truck starting up at that same temp next winter. But get youself one of those temp guns and go and take the temp by the block heater. If its truly cold then it would be the same temp as outside (show thermometer to). Might wanna take the temp of the exhaust manifold to just to make sure. Just so you can end this debate lol.
Right on. I'm not calling you out as a liar, I would just like to end this whole debate lol. Might wanna do it to the cummins as well, with the temp gun lol.
My dad's got a Powerstroke 3/4 ton. Were from northern MN and that thing is STUBBORN if left outside too long in the dead of winter. But he has a heated garage for it. You got some cranking power indeed.
i think your an idiot that's what i think. there was a van parked there three days prior , when it snowed.i have yet to see an idling engine melt a 6' by 12' square patch of snow, that's what i think. idiot.
That is a 24V is it not? I can usually tell just by the engine sound...the 24V is a bit louder. They are close but not quite the same. Both awesome engines. It is impressive that they can start like that. I never have problems with my IH 6.9 in my Ford but then again it got down to 22 here last week and in FL we think that's frigid.
I dont know about all your trucks out there but i have a 2001 dodge diesel and ive started it at -29C unplugged, it was close but it fired, minus 20 C is common here in alberta so seeing this doesent really shock me, when i work out of town i cant plug it in and in the mountain sometimes it gets close to minus 30C and i cant plug it in, im just glad i own a Cummins.
i got a 12v and starting at -30 unplugged is one hell of a battle, if i do get it running it will smoke like there is no tomorrow. has 370,000kms....how ever the 05 i use for work will start at -30 fairly easy unplugged (only happens if there is no power avaliable)
I will do a video of the duramax sometime soon, I need to wait for it to get to be about -20 out , to keep this all fair. I will say right now that it starts WAY better than the ford , and probably just as good as the dodge does.
i think its wierd how people who think they are true Cummins fans can't tell wether or not this is a 12 or 24. the trick i use is the mirrors. you can easily tell the general years of trucks by little features like that.
i didn't say people don't get new mirrors, but generally its easy to tell the years of the truck by looking at the mirrors. especially if their the older ones like this. but ya those towing mirrors look bad ass and we're going to put some on my dads 96'
It's a '95, which had the 12 valve 6BT in them. Nice vid. No glow plugs, just intake manifold grid heaters in there. The Ford/Navistar in his other video has glowplugs(the truck that didn't start as easilly). Navistar's hate the cold. The Cummins does'nt care what the temperature is outside, it still starts right up even without being plugged in overnight.
sorry about the same three comments I said about the truck. But what I wanted to say was that the Cummins 12-valve diesel sounds the same as the 24-valve. I'm not trying to be mean or bust anyone's balls.
you got a kick-ass truck, KCASTUN. What year is it, is it a manual or automatic, and can you do total burnouts in it, not that you want to do one? keep up the good work on that Cummins.
is your truck a 12-valve or a 24-valve and is it a manual or automatic? Whatever it is I love the sound of a Cummins diesel engine in the morning. Sick of gas engines all the time.
what year is your truck and is it a 12-valve or a 24-valve? Whatever you did, when you started up the truck, it started up real sweet! No glow plugs required (take that PowerChoke and Duracrap!)
But yours probably doesn't get tuned quite like mine does for the cold weather. My fathers truck does not start nearly as well as mine , and it is almost identicle.
ya mine does the same thing! im pretty sure the timing is off a little bit! that might be something for u to check into also! im gonna. they say for the 12 valves that 14-15* is normal!
Also, the Ford was placed in an area where the wind was wipping right into it, the Dodge wasnt. seems the Ford would have suffered a bit colder temps due to windchill compared to a wind protected Dodge. There's no way for us to know if this is authentic, but hey believe what you want
If you knew anything at all , you would know that wind chill does not effect machinery. The dodge WAS in the wind too, the camera was not , due to where it was sitting while I started the dodge.
i have an 83 6.9 f350 diesel wont start when it gets about 50 dgrees or so..block heater dont work anymore and ive changed glow plugs many times no differance...nothin a little starting fluid wont fix..
thats bad man, your creating an ether dependent engine by doing that, you should be able to start it up if you give the glow plugs some time to do their job
i've got a 94 12v and it'll start the same as that when it's freezing (32F) out, but I get some white smoke for a few seconds, so i'd say thats a great cold start.
My uncle's '97 Powerstroke doesn't even want to start if it gets around 60 degrees fahrenheit, and that's with it being plugged up, too. My dad has never plugged up his '95 Cummings, and it starts every time, no problem regardless of the temperature.
Yeah well, thats the problem with ford and their powerstroke, i mean pansie stroke. LOL In my Diesel class, we're not even aloud to say the f word (ford) or we get points ripped. LOL
Plugged in means plugging the block heater in. Most of your diesel engines have them. Even some gas engines have them for when it gets REALLY cold. The block heater warms the block and the cylinders up. Along with that, the dodge also has a grid heater in place of glow plugs. It serves the same function. To warm the cylinders up.
The cummins motors definetly start the best when its cold out. I have seen a 93 first gen with 365,000 miles start when it was below zero with no block heater
I have to agree with this fella here. I've worked with diesels all my life and they won't even start that easily when it's 10 degrees out. They will start easier than a stroker, but they will blow blue/black smoke and sound rough for a couple minutes or so. This one puffed out a little black smoke at startup, just like the rest of them do when warm.
dude,my gas 4.7 dodge doesn't start that good.and it doesn't get nearly that cold here.i know people who've had trouble getting 12v engine started when it's cold around here
What year is this truck? The reason that I ask is because Dodge switched from a buzzer to a chime for the key-in-ignition reminder in the late '90s, I believe & I defenitely heard a buzzer when you opened the door.
I don't even have a Dodge Cummins yet I know these do NOT have glow plugs, but a heater grid. This is a great video... sorry to hear about your Ford though.
BIG Joe You find me a set of glow Plugs on a Direct injected engine like this 5.9 Cummins and ill show you a million dollar bill . That Diesel mechanic school your at sucks i can say that
Promise all you want, and we'll see who's the dumb one. I have a Cummins, and trust me, it doesn't have glow plugs. A grid heater, yes, but no glow plugs.
u sound like my friend who say my sabb/ford diesel in my boat got spark plugs too... lol.. that dosent even got grid heater.... just this valve opner on the diesel pump. ofc its not ment to be started under freezing point.
Yes, yes, yes...NO GLOW PLUGS. Air Intake Heater. Another one of the reasons they start better than glow plug engines. That and they have a higher compression ratio...
Most of them (unless they have problems) are that easy to start. I have a 2002, and if you let the glow plugs do their thing, it starts right up. You can hear the glow plugs (unless your deaf) before he starts the engine. They are a very high pitched noise, mine makes the exact same noise.
Pretty sad you own a Cummins Powerd Dodge and do not know the damn diffrence between Glow Plugs and a Intake Heater Grid . Just made your self look stupid
im not gonna lie im in a diesel mechanics class and my favorite trucks are dodge cummins....and they will start at 20 below but that truck had already been ran before that day because if theres that much snow on the ground then theres gonna be a little on the truck but there is none....but cummins still rule the diesel world
Most of them (unless they have problems) are that easy to start. I have a 2002, and if you let the glow plugs do their thing, it starts right up. You can hear the glow plugs (unless your deaf) before he starts the engine. They are a very high pitched noise, mine makes the exact same noise.
I'd have to agree. I used to own a Ddoge Cummins. There is not way that thing was NOT ran earlier that day. It's still cold, you can hear the grids heating up, but it's not an over night start. Seriously, if it IS an over night start...wow...that's awesome
kinda hard to belive it started THAT easy, i mean yes its a dodge, yes it has a cummins...but it dident have that high idle,or black smoke u normally get on a diesel..but if it did start like that...HELL YEA!

im not gonna lie im in a diesel mechanics class and my favorite trucks are dodge cummins....and they will start at 20 below but that truck had already been ran before that day because if theres that much snow on the ground then theres gonna be a little on the truck but there is none....but cummins still rule the diesel world
