It's his mind craving love and inventing these fake scenarios and fantasies in his mind. I've been in this same state before, I should know.

Honestly though it seems sometimes ppl overvalue being simply "clean", just not abusing substances. The fact is that someone who's clean yet still obsesses over being clean and/or trying not to use is still having their life owned by drugs. To me, sober is a mindset, not so much simply not doing one's DOC, but instead not even feeling like it's an issue anymore. That to me is being sober, not just not using but not even caring about it.
