The difference is Fedor got his arm caught in the triangle and was pretty much trapped, where Roger was able to keep his arm free (plus having the height/length advantage to your opponent doesn't hurt either when trying to escape).

It was a rear naked choke. He didnt have the hands how your used to seeing them with a rear naked but thats all it was.

its called a Rear Naked Choke. it compresses the arteries that feed blood to the brain, so i guess you would call it a blood choke. The Brazilians call it Mata Leon, which means "lion killer" b/c not even a lion is strong enough to prevent the move from working.

Roger just didn't put the choking hand in the elbow of the other arm that normally goes behind the head.  He's just clasping his hands together. Anderson Silva did the same thing to Dan Henderson...Silva was trying to regular choke, but was being blocked, so Silva transitioned to the way that Roger does it here.

oh ok.....i didn't realize you were wanting the finer details. Roger is using a gable grip....the hand on the choking arm is palm down and his other hand (right hand) is palm up.

im not sure what the other grip variation would be.

you can't get quite the anaconda type of squeeze with the gable grip, but it eliminates a few steps, making it quicker. Im sure Roger used it b/c Ribeiro would look to defend.

roger said in a mag that his defensive technique is his secret. He also mentioned that defense is directly linked to attack so that by learning how to defend you also know what not to give your opponent when youre attacking so your attack also gets better. he said he learned good defense by tapping out which forced him to master all sorts of escapes. Thereby in my opinion proving the maxim stated by pedro sauer which is that the best guys in jiu jitsu are the ones who used to tap the most.

Yes Roger's defensive skills are unbelievable.. in BJJ.. being able to defend yourself in a ring with an angry ass russian trying to pop your head wide open like a pumpkin is very different than of in a mat with no one trying to punch you.. Roger hasn't met ANYONE even CLOSE to Fedor's level in MMA yet. He might be able to be great in MMA.. but so far he hasn't shown anything special. Arm baring Waterman doesn't mean shit. Like I said maybe Roger can be that good.. so far hasn't shown anything.

Yea roger has some great BJJ. Im not sure if you could see and distinguish his bjj from xande's traditional JJ. I would be more focused on xande. He was great here, although over matched. At the CBJJ World Championships this year, they met again. Xande made roger look like a novice. Right now, neither of them would survive round one with fedor. Hes to well rounded at the moment. They would not be able to take the bigger/stronger fighter down, they would be tko/koed in the first 2min.

I see Roger's style as more traditional because he's far more aggressive and always looking for the submission. Xande's very much a strategic point fighter who makes few submission attempts and relies too much on advantages. Have no idea how you could think Roger looked like a "novice" in their last fight. X should've been penalized more for stalling. Roger almost caught him in an armbar at the end. Consider also that Roger wasn't doing much gi training beforehand.

I disagree, a lot of these competitors have been training bjj since they were young. I believe their stamina would almost be the same especially at this level. Roger's technique is just superior not to mention he is tall and lanky and that is a lot of guys weakness. Roger just simply makes his jiu jitsu unfair to the rest.

Ryron Gracie is the best in the world. I've seen him spar with some of the top fighters and jiu-jitsu black belts, and he owns them. He completely dominates them. The only person who can threaten Ryron is his brother, Rener. Plus, he's a great guy, very funny and kind.
