I thought about this as well. Advanced aliens traveling through space should probably also be more militarily advanced. But maybe they're just not used to conditions on earth (the atmosphere, gravity, terrain, etc). Also, the alien foot soldiers appeared to be only artificial drones (they didn't even have brains, much like jelly fish).
