What a game, one of my favorite 49ers games of all time. Crazy part is that this wouldn't have happened in this day and age with instant replay because Jerry Rice fumbled during that last drive, and replay would have given the ball to the Packers.
Jerry Rice taught Terrell Owens how to play the position. But think of what that selfish piece of shit T.O. could have done if he would have learned humility, humbleness and respect for the game and his opponents. He might have actually won a Super Bowl. Probably more.
@hrus1 there wasnt no instant replay in the 90s after having it in the mid 80s cause player and teams hated it. then they brought it back in 99 i belive
@hrus1 yeah good point, or else there wouldn't have been no Young to T.O. catch at the end of the game, & Green Bay wins 27-23. And who knows how far GB would've gone in the playoffs. I don't think the challenge flags were put into place yet but they would be I think either the following season or the one after that.
I think this play was greater than the "catch 1" and the "catch 3" because this was the only do or die pass. On the catch 1, if they missed they coulda kicked a field goal to tie and same with the catch 3. Also, no one expected this. This was my greatest memory as a 49ers fan as a kid.
@clarkallard Umm...no, The Catch was for the NFC Championship and it was 27-21. Either schools are teaching match that's fuzzier than the dice in a 78 Caddy, or a FG makes it 27-24. Kids.
@clarkallard Wrong! The Catch 1 the 49ers needed a TD as they were down 27-21 to the Cowboys late in the 4th Quarter. A FG wasn't going to do any good for them in that game; also Catch 1 was in the NFC Championship to advance to the Super Bowl. Of course this game in 1998 NFC Wild Card game and the 2011 NFC Divisional Playoff game were exciting don't get me wrong. This game against the Packers they were down by 4; the game last week against the Saints they were down by 3.
@clarkallard catch one they couldn't kick a field goal it was 27-21.....it was 3rd and 3, if they didn't make that catch 4th and 3 just seemed that much scary, catch 1 is always the greatest, took em to there first ever superbowl
@clarkallard youre fuckin retarded. 49ers fan my ass you dont even know what the score was. they were down 6 with like a minute and they pretty much started a dynasty because of this play. ending one cowboys at the same time. YOURE retarded and the people that thumbed up your comment are retarded.
@clarkallard Yup. This game was KILLING ME. A new Rival, I have to tell you the truth. After 3 losses to the Packers in the post season, I was personally defeated. I was at my friends house, fell asleep after the Packers went up 27-23... I woke up to my friend screaming

fumble or not, that was football then. bad calls/good calls. if we got all the calls right from every game back then with instant replay, we'd have a completely different season and playoffs. just the way the game was then.
Holy fuck. Vernon made such a similar catch, in a very similar situation. And when both Owens and Davis came back to the bench, they were crying?! History really DOES repeat.
Very emotional. The commentators told the story of never giving up while he was crying. I wish TO was this humble all the time. This was pre-asshole TO. (I'm a TO fan but it's the truth)
I remember this game! A great finish and the game that put T.O. on the map as an NFL superstar! Wow this looks close to the Vernon Davis and Alex Smith play from yesterday!
This was back when defenses were actually allowed to play. This 5000 yards and 40 touchdowns a year is just making a great game boring and predictable.
@joemoe23 i totally agree. although the run game bores me at times, QB stats and ratings are so overrated and meaningless in some cases...the game is more than just QBs and receivers.
I PREDICTED "THE CATCH 3" IN MY SONG ABOUT THE 9ERS DAYS BEFORE IT HAPPENED! CHECK MY CHANNEL AND LISTEN TO THE TRACK "49ER EMPIRE" AND LOOK AT THE DATE IT WAS UPLOADED. WHO'S GOT IT BETTER THAN US? NOBODY!!!!!!

@lethalfang --- I was chatting with my brother during "the play" yesterday afternoon and I thought I was watching a replay from '98! Alex Smith certainly has come a long way, and Harbaugh is big reason for it!

I am a long time 9er fan an ydes Rice did fumble. 2 bad things about this game was the horrific ankle break Hearst had against ATL the next week and after that catch TO became the arrogant asshole he is known for today.
