Yes, Argerich plays with no expression! However, Horowitz, Robert Silverman, and of course, Rachmaninov himself made great recordings of this piece.

Nelson Freire is a great musician, a great poet of the piano and supporting all that he is a great pianist. He should be an international cult figure as Rubinstein or Horowitz were. Have you heard him play Rachmaninov's 4th concerto? Up there with Rach himself and Michelangeli. What a beautiful sound Freire gets from the piano and such clarity of texture. The BBC critics voted his Chopin Sonata 2 the best on record. Freire is one of THE GREAT PIANISTS. This Rach 3 is beautiful.

This video made a big impression on me. I would suggest that music lovers and students listen to this excerpt over and again. It is a lesson on how to play Rachmaninoff as it should be (but seldom is). Mr Freire plays with sobriety. There is no affectation. And yet it is so beautiful. Other versions sound corny in comparison, including Ms Argerich's.

AMEN to laar123's comment. Many play with uncalled-for gestures/affections which totally ruins the flow and progressions. Give Bolet's version with LSO's Fischer a go too; there you can experience the art of a consummate master as he takes you on a ride thru the vast depths of human emotion.

Who could possibly play with less emotion and affectation than Argerich?

Although very intense and emotional, I prefer Olga Kern's version. But that could be because of the recording quality. To me it is near perfect.
