Kiss wore make up because they wanted to be part of the New York glam scene which included the New York Dolls and the "Ziggy Stardust" era Bowie but wearing feminine make up and clothes didn't work for them. So they turned to Alice Cooper for inspiration, the whole horror show aspect and black and white Make up came directly from him. So the idea was to have four Alice Coopers in the band but each with their own face, that's how it came to be.
