  • The 2nd one sounds like it came from their 1971 double L.P. simply titled "The Ventures" that had mostly their greatest hits and their latest song "Hawaii Five-O".

  • Both of these are the same recording with the former one probably remastered at some later date. This song has been recorded by a number of artists, but this Ventures version was probably copied from Jorgen Ingemann's version. His version has the neatest lead guitars (nylon string acoustic for the main melody and electric playing all the "answers" in overtones). But of all the versions I've heard, the Venture's version has the absolute BEST bass part created and played by Bob Bogle.

  • Brings back memories of my school days when I first heard this. There are a few more great instrumentals in that album. Thank you for posting this!

  • OK, to clear this up, this version comes from the "Ventures Play Telstar" album recorded in 1963.

There was no studio version called "Apache'65" but it was called that on the "Ventures On Stage" album (probably to cash in the Davie Allan and the Arrrows single).

'Apache' was re-recorded however, in the studio (probably around 1965) but first appeared on the "Golden Greats" album.

  • @verlaine4 Are you agreeing that the first one here is the 1963 remastered?

On Golden Greats it's completely different.

In other words the CD compilation created an unholy mess of the naming.

  • @GeoSilverMore I am my friend. These are thes same versions, one has been remastered (early 1990's).

The version on "Golden Greats" is completely different.

  • Not to confuse you, but rhh1945 is wrong. I have Golden Greats and it's version was recorded in the studio and is very much like the On Stage version. As is the Live in Japan version and the version on the Beloved Invaders Video. If you are interested, I have a video comparison I could send you.

  • "Apache '65" on the Golden Greats Album has a totally different sound. Nokie "squeaks" his Low E string to make the flying arrow sounds. He also slides up to the echo part in the bridge section.

  • @fmarsalajr Let's not confuse this any farther. Golden Greats (1967) does not contain "Apache 65". You wrote it wrong fmarsalajr. It just contained "Apache", and I've been told by rhh1945 that it's the same as their 1963 LP.

I'm coming to the conclusion I stated a month ago, and which shatinterry first said.

  • What if it's a mistake by the studio. Maybe they used the wrong title. Maybe this first one is simply an enhanced master of 1963.

  • The "Apache 65" version is on the first "The Ventures on Stage" album, which was released in 1965 (there are 70s-era albums with the same title suffixed by the year). It's all live concert recordings, I think. There's other really good stuff on the album, too.

  • @jwpretd I've heard that said before. When I looked for it online I heard a messy live performance. You have heard the LP? It would be strange that a stage performance would be so clean and perfect.

  • I love the Ventures, they are one of my all-time favorite instrumental groups

But, when when it comes to the best ever version of Apache, do a search here for:

    rPDwzM9M

and you will see what I mean.

  • I've known The Shadows' version a long time. It was written and first recorded there.

  • Perhaps an answer to you question, what album did the first version come from.

    # Album: Best Of The Ventures (Liberty/EMI)

    # Audio CD (August 24, 1988)

    # Original Release Date: 1987

    # Number of Discs: 1

    # Label: EMI Distribution

    # ASIN: B000008LZH

This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

  • Ok, your last version of Apache was REMIXED on the 1992 Release of The Ventures Play Telstar/The Ventures In Space., so your first version is the ORIGINAL mix off of the ORIGINAL recording of The Ventures Play Telstar. Both versions can be confusing, but DON"T let the REMIXES they release now days fool you!!! Trust me, I have an eaar for music since I don't see well.

  • Wrong. I have the vinyl Telstar LP (1963). The second sounds like it, not first.

  • Not sure where, but it was recorded in 1965 acording to The Best Of The Ventures CD released in 1987 on the EMI label

  • That would make sense if it's accurate. By where I meant what LP. So it wasn't on any 1965 LP. Where was it then? On Golden Greats (1967) were they from the originals or all rerecorded, I don't have it?

  • @GeoSilverMore It's on the first (1965) "The Ventures on Stage" album. There are others with that title suffixed with the year from the 1970s. The title on that album is indeed "Apache 65". There are several for sale on ebay.

  • There was an Apache '65 by The Arrows but it's not this.

  • I see what you mean Geo, I've played through the two versions in my collection again, the 1987 The Best of Ventures CD(published by EMI America Records & made in Canada) sound much better then the Telstar original version, The solo guitar is a bit lay back on the Telstar version, But even my wife she reckon they are the same song, Well digital remastering may have improved the sound, Same as you I dont understanding why the publisher had renamed it as 'Apache'65' in the greatest hit album..

  • Thanks a lot for your input. The second selection is more a direct copy from the Telstar album. The first may very well be a remastering of it for the CD. I'd like confirmation of that. It sounds so much more perfect, and the sound is a little different. But every note seems to be played the same. Anyway it's a case where digital remastering probably helped instead of spoiled for a change.

Same thing may have happened for Pipeline by the Chantays, I don't know.

  • I visited yr channel & found yr query, strange! this version is the 1962 Telsatar album version already, I checked my Ventures collection, I know where you went wrong infact the 1987 issue of the Best of ventures went wrong, this version is the first Apache done by them on the Telstar album, but the 1987 CD had made a mistake to call it the Apache'65, is that solve yr problem, I'm a true follower of the Ventures, I had all their early LPs & CDs.
