With a friend we've almost finished an outrigger canoe (model melanesia from wharram design). I wonder how you made the sail, is it a flat panel or different strips of sailcloth. have you got a sail plan?
Nice vid! I like it. 2 the other complaining about the music-i didnt even notice until you guys said somthing i was so facinated. Oh yeah there is a lot of good music but guess what! its not your video and its not about the music its about the boat! And dudes its called the M-U-T-E BUTTON!!!
thank you oj1jo you're pretty good with your creation... i have sailed on many occasions on this kind of canoe, between the islands... thank you for sharing this vid... oh I'm from the Marshall Islands north of Kiribati
The sail is very aesthetically pleasing. Is the bend in the spars and the hollow or concave shape at the head important to performance or is it just for looks ?
I'm starting on a hawaiian style outrigger canoe project in stitch and glue plywood, but I remain very interested in the Proa design, and since I've yet to make the first cut, am still considering it. Did you build your boat from plans? It looks like plywood construction. If so, where did you obtain these plans? Boat looks great and a lot of fun.
We used to steer with weight shifting normally. This time I needed one stroke of paddle to rapidly alter course - you may notice sailing yacht on next seqence.
Great sail!

Have you got some footage of Shunting_tacking?
90 or 120 deg between tracks?
valvetrom 2 years ago
about 90-100 deg between tacks depaending od the sea state.
90 deg on calm water and 2B.
Above that, if you want to point higher you need to slow, becasue apparent wind if too much influenced by your own speed..
Same for all light multis I suppose.
Don't haeve good film from shunting

ok who are these people the canoe looks like the kind of canoe my people sail on but i can tell this is not our design.... who?
jenmajol 2 years ago
hi,
I have built this canoe based on principles of Kiribati concept in some respect. With respect to absolute genial engineering of original design -
both canoe and crablaws sail.
Canoe is designed, built an sailed in Poland, in attempt to understand basics of crabclaws sail.
All respect to Pacific poeple who keep close to their origins.

Bend of spars helps in sail selfadapting to changes in strength of the wind.
It allows to have bigger sail area without loosing good ballance.
there is little hard hard evidence it improves airflow but my personall belief is YES.
Concave rear leech helps a lot in mainating right shape of sail, improves overall balance of hydro/aerodynamic forces.

rig is complete lo-tech.
yards are wooden
sail is from polyethylene mesh 150g/m2, cut flat (no sailmaikers workshop needed)
Mast is canting to actual bow.
Rig is perfect for proa, more difficult for Cat I'm affraid. But possible :)
Pozdrawiam(=regards)

Génial. Votre gréement se déplace t'il au vent? On veut en voir plus? Encore!

Answering to the result of aoutomatic translation:

It nice to hear from you :)

very nice!!
Did you try to steer using changing the weight distribution (move for and aft) instead of using the oar?
At that size, it should work pretty well.
