This is where the remake made a sharp curve from the original. In the original they get out of the supermarket , and then the Blob goes into the movie theater and into the diner. In this one , after they leave the restaurant the government comes in and tells them the blob is a biological war experiement , they find it killing everyone in the movie theater , it goes in a sewer , eats a kid , they throw a bomb down in the sewer , it doesn't work , they go in a church and kill it with a snowmaker.

Tell you the truth, I don't think an amorphous blob like that could do much more than sit their and wait for someone to wander into it's clutches. HOWEVER, the movie doesn't go into much detail on the physiology of the creature, therefore making it nigh impossible (at least to my knowledge) to hypothesize anything conclusive pertaining to the anatomy of the "blob".

And yes, what happened is physically possible if the acids the blob used were fast and powerful enough, as Crystasorrow explained.
