My face when i found out how toxic this thing is after a prof. did it without any fume hood in front of 24 people (we were visiting a high school to help us choose where to go)...
question: so the fume hood protects you from the toxic fumes of all these experiments, but where do all those toxic fumes go? are they neutralized before being release into the air? or are they just dumped into our atmosphere...that can't be good...
@haimerejd anyway there aren't any toxic "fumes", the only gases produced are nitrogen and steam which you are probably breathing right now lol. the danger lies in the ammonium dichromate - hexavalent chromium compounds (i.e. compounds with Cr in the +6 oxidation state) are carcinogenic.
No - the risk to this great man is virtually nil since he is doing it in a proper lab environment under a fume hood whilst wearing all safety gear, including nitrile gloves. It is often only dangerous in such ways when inexperienced individuals do this themselves without most of the aforementioned precautions.

@Triplewave4 Cause, while these little experiments look cool, science (at least to me) as always been about the whats and why's of how things happen, I find how and why the experiment happens more fascinating the experiments themselves :).
How do humans isolate/create ammonium dichromate? I always wonder whether we're wasting all of our chemicals as we use them (like how we'll have peak phosphorus and peak helium and so on), or if we actually get the chemicals sustainably.
I am very curious to know why ICE +thermite = BOOM. They displayed this as being true on Mythbusters, but they weren't able to explain why this happens(not even the bomb expert). So I would like you to enlighten us on this matter. Please? =)

Doing it once can cause cancer ?! Sounds like hyped up bullshit to me.
You are more likely to get cancer by living in a city inhaling car fumes and other crap then getting cancer from this experiment if ever.
Besides watching and doing it are two totally different things.
Doing the experiment is far more effective when it comes to learning and motivating students.
Now that's fact !
That about cancer is just a theory. We don't really know what causes cancer. Could simply be bad luck and genes

Not a chem. major or anything, but i think this is similar to putting a cube of ice in hot tea(the ice cracks) but on a lot larger scale, with a large block of ice and thermite providing a lot more heat than hot tea could ever provide.
HartuBeatu 4 months ago
@Phoboz anything hotter than a certain temperature that touches water causes an explosion.
the water vapourizes so fast that it indeed causes the explosion
if you had thermite on the ice block,
the ice touching the thermite immediately becomes water and then steam with no where to go
and then it explodes. (an explosion is just a rapid expansion of molecules)
this happens in steel mills everywhere if molten metal ever touches pools of water or ice
butternutsquashpie 4 months ago
@butternutsquashpie Yes, I am aware of this phenomenon, it is called sublimation. But the thing is that the explosion looks quite bigger than you would expect. Phoboz 4 months ago
@Phoboz well if i were to explain the explosion of C4,
you would also not assume that the explosion would be so big,
but the thing is that the water is sublimating so fast that the explosion causes the ice chunks to fly everywhere
