Pasan y siguen pasando los anos desde mi encuentro musical con Neil. Lo quise la primera vez y sigue nuestra historia. En mis momentos de "blues", ya sé que él saldra de apuros. Es un senor.
I always thought Neil was singing about Jesus and his crucifixion when he sings about the man on the right, then the man on the left, and the "me" in between. I always loved this song and Neil Diamond. Thanks for posting.
@TheMissShevy Yes, indeed! He sings to thousands at a concert. He sings to millians through his recordings. But I still think he's singing only to ME. How does he do it? A rare and miraculous gift!
What a beautiful song from the world's greatest singer/songwriter! @e61807 - if what you are saying is true, why tell us? God knows and that's what matters most. Divulging this publicly is just an exercise in vanity. Then again, if you are not telling the truth, He will make you accountable - nothing surer!
It's been years since I heard this song from the "Serenade" album and I feel I've rediscovered it again. Such an inspiring and uplifting piece..........
Happy Birthday Neil, I know it's one day late but we share our birthday on the 24 th Jan. There is no one like you and there will never be, you are a living angel of music. I bought my first record way back in '72, and there has not been a day in my life since then that I haven't listened to your music.
They called this Serenade album of his, self-indulgent. I have no idea what they mean when he had blossomed as a singer/songwriter here, a depth he never surpassed. I am still moved by this song and others on his album. When he goes, he will never me becuase of it.
@gibeau64 You and I obviously regard this album very highly so who cares what the critics say? They panned Elton John's Blue Moves album too, calling it an exercise in self pity or other such nonsense. In the end, all that matters to an individual is when they like it themselves. Let's just enjoy Neil's talent.
Lady Magdelene was my original spelling to differentiate my lyrics from the biblical Mary Magdalene. After the contract was signed by Neil's record company, the song was eventually released with the new spelling. I think they thought I just mis-spelled it. My name is James C. Ronning. I was a ghost writer at the time and have written many very well known songs by major artists. I am old and have a neurological condition and my time is not long. I feel compelled to leave this song as my legacy.
@rrichmond72 If you google my life and see who I am I think you would at least consider that your worship of Diamond has a bit blinded you to possibilities. If you were worth it I could show you the original contract I signed with Diamond's company . I could also show you the original release album where Neil chose not to claim it as his own. The label said "Writer Unknown". I also could show you a copy of the check I got from Diamond's company. I sent it to Cohen first. He sent to N.D.
@e61807 I googled you and didn't come up with diddly squat! Don't come on here trying to pull this crap over on people who know better! If you have "neurological problems" then you are obviously having trouble remembering the truth from fiction!!!
Neil is the greatest song writer EVER. But I am getting old now and I once was a ghost writer and sent Neil this song. It is his to claim, because I hold the contract in my hand now between his record company and me giving all rights to him. It is his legal right to claim this song as his own. Of all the songs I have written this is the most meaningful to me. I wrote it from a hospital bed with a soldier on each side. This was like 40+ years ago. The first release says "writer unknown".
fell in love with this song when it came out on 'serenade' almost forty years ago...it is just as much a 'beautiful noise' now as it was then...congrats Neil on your induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame...long overdue
Songs like this are probably why it took so long for him to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Don't get me wrong. I love this song and all others by him like this, but during this period he steered away from Rock and Roll music and I guess the folks at the HOF kinda forgot about him. Anyway, bettter late than never.
There is not a Singer song writer out there who can come close to the Depths of feeling and understanding That Neil Diamond can accomplish. The man can do this because he has the rare gift of seeing deep with in him self Then He is able to share this with the rest of us. He is far and away The most introspective of the song writers. His writing reminds me in some ways of the Immortal Poet Kahlil Gibran.
I am like the wounded soldier between the other two and i know the full meanig of this song here the guy in the middle is looking forward to getting out and is still worried in case he wont .but the music in this song helps me look forward for there is only hurt in the past ,i love you Donalane
I always thought this song was about Jesus dying on the cross and the two men hanging on either side of him. With Jesus in between. Anyway, that's what I got out of this song, which is one of my favorites by Neil Diamond.
This is a song about wounded soldiers lying in their beds at a hospital. The one in between the other two is asking what life will be like for him, if and when he leaves.
From GlenHale: What was your inspiration and thoughts that led to Lady Magdaline/Yes I Will. Any chance to hear those two songs in concert. Answer: "Lady Madaline" was inspired by my then wife, Marcia.

Dr. James C. Ronning wrote this song long ago before many off you listerners were born. It has deep meaning for him, but to others it is like a surealistic painting. Each set of eyes and brain sees it's own meaning. When he wrote the song he spelled Magdeline with an "i" to differentiate Lady from the Mary Magdalene in the bible. Without Diamond this song would have been heard only by the sound of the nurses walking by his room in a Military hospital over 45 years ago.
James C Ronning wrote this song from a military hospital some 44 plus years ago. He was never given credit. This is the truth, but YouTube doesn't have the guts to post this.
'A serenade, a hymn of sorts, at most a small potion for the soul. ND' - this is what Neil wrote for the sleeve of his album Serenade, which has been my No 1 album of all time since it was released in 1974! A small potion for the soul it is, as just about every comment I have read down below says in it's own way. 116 comments on this song alone so far - small wonder Neil Diamond plays in football stadiums. Keep going Neil -
" That love is a song, for each man to sing" The path to ones soul is a three prong fork, that points 3 ways to destinies unknown. Which one will you choose?...
@54nomore/ As good as any interpretation of this surealistic painting of one man's thoughts as he lay in a hospital bed wounded in war both body and soul. This is as good an interpretation as I have seen. But don't make the mistake that it is the actual meaning of this song from the pen that placed it on the paper. I KNOW.
the best of his albums - was a breakthru - it only had 8 songs on the album and every one a masterpiece - the weakest was incidentally the only one released as a single (Longfellows Serenade) - such is the publics taste in music - "Serenade" - get it if you can!
There are many sides to us. It is up to us to determined which side to follow. "The man on the left is a prised unwon, The man on the right is a man undone, and the me in between" Choose wisely the path, for the man in between will most definitely be lost.....
Something about this mans music is TRULY spiritual. I feel more deeply, profoundly and just close my eyes and FEEL his music. I'm in my early 30's, so he's not really my my era. But I just absolutely LOVE how his music sounds and feels. This man is a blessing to this earth.
lovetotray I feel the same way....I was 10 years old when I was introduced to Neil Diamond. My older brother would play his music and I would just listen. It came to affect me in a way I never thought. His music says what our heart feels even at a young age. Now I am 47 and it still touches me as it did at 10 years old. He simply is a amazing writer and unbelivable singer.
Every time I listen to Neil Diamond, he takes me to a place that is on another time, another plane of existence. His words are deep yet simple, and they fill a need in all of us.
I fell in love with Neil Diamond's music back in 1971, when I was 13. When I was young, this was always my second favourite after Holly Holy. Revisiting in my 50s, I still rate Neil as one of the greatest songwriters ever.. but this has moved into No.1 slot. What a magnificent song ... Neil deserves to be recognised along with a very select few of great poet/songwriters: Dylan, John Lennon, Paul Simon and possibly Kris Kristofferson.
The writing on this great song is so captivating. The visions are so awe inspiring and uplifting. They take you to a good place. He is to me. The greatest singer/songwriter of pop music ever!...
If you enjoy Neil Diamond try his version of "I Dreamed A Dream" from Hot August Night 2 (1987). Compare with Susan Boyle and all the others. Also, check out the change in lyrics. Video link posted above.
He'd give you his soul if you asked him for some.A child in his way for he needs to believe. That love is a song for each man to sing. The man on the left is a prize unwon
I grew up with this music on Sunday mornings, my mum is his biggest fan and that goes for me too, the greatest ballad singer i ever heard, and he rocks with the best, the whole package. Took my Mum to see him in England in 2005, her, me and my brother and we had the time of our lives, brilliant, brilliant performer!
The most important question that you need to be asking yourself, my friend, is once you get Neil to play your wedding, how do keep him from slambagging your new bride in the pantry?
Because if I know Neil like I think I do... he's gonna do it. Raw Dog, too.
Neil is great, but he is a very respectful and truthful person also... You don't know Neil at all!!! He is a beautiful soul and would not do such a thing... (we girl's sometimes wish, and dream), but HE doesn't deserve that kind of DISRespect... Thankyou!!!
I haven't heard this song since I probably 6 or 7 years old. Meant nothing to me. Then a few months back, a special person began sending it to me at the end of every e-mail she sent. Of course, we're talking some 30 years later, but it describes me perfectly, and she knew it before we even met.
We were engaged this past weekend, and I arranged for the restaurant to play the song after she accepted my proposal.
Wonder how to get Neil to sing it for our first dance at our wedding?
I fell in love with Neil`s music when I was 14yrs old...watched "Love at the Greek" a special of T.V. in "1976" !!! My first album was "I`m Glad You`re Here With Me Tonight"--seen him 4 times in concert--a man that spoke to the world with his heart & soul through his music...many of his writings were stories of himself****THE MAN BETWEEN,IS NEIL****one of the greatest writers of our time !!! dh
Well said and right on with your analysis. I was twelve yrs old in 1966 when I first heard-Cherry Cherry. I became a fan then and ever since. He has captivated me like no other singer/songwriter. And his music has been cover by every known music chandra there is. Quite an accomplishment for a young man from Brooklyn New York..
I went through all his albums a few years ago,in order to discover some less known gems and this was amongst those I found.Again it's beautiful music.True magnificence.
" Show me peaceful days before my youth is gone" I hope someday this can be accomplished in our lifetime. Where there will be no need for (Wars) between countries, ones race or creed,or family members, or just between ourselves. What a poet of song Neil Diamond is. Thanks for this beautiful gift you penned ( lady Magdalene).
Hello! I just had to reply to what you wrote here.... Did Neil really write this song? I've never heard of it. What language is this translated from? Wow... what a surprise! Please let me know. Thank you!
Yes! Neil Diamond wrote this song back in 1974 on his Serenade Album. I guess the radio stations felt it was to long to give it any playing time. But, as you can hear it is one of his best. Take care..
yes, great poet lyrcist Neil Diamond wrote(MISSA)...in the peaceful days of his youth....brilliant beyond compare....soul searching man will search on to his end which will be his beginning....
Great Job!!!!!!!!! This is one of those songs that you cannot buy as a mp3 download, and I ofcourse, it's one of my fav's. Thanks for putting it up!!!!!
This was clearly posted by a real fan - I've never forgotten this one myself since the lyrics and vocals are introspective and moving. The critics panned this album but that goes to show how superficial the critics. This song represented the golden age of Diamond, when his songwriting was at it's very best. Thanks for posting.
@jordan04n ...strong feelings even now as time goes by....he writes on for his soul is in need of pouring out inner feelings touched by God....his labor of expression feels my heart with peace....
@jordan04n I am a massive Neil fan and always read your comments regarding his songs, I am also a Neil tribute, there isn't a Diamond song i dont know and I often say that his lesser known songs are the true gems, Lady Magdalene is a masterpiece of musicianship, both lyrically and orchestrally, it is poetic and moves the listener on many levels, the deepest emotions conveyed within the song, Neil Diamond is a one off, a rarity in that he continues to write heartfelt music which inspires others
@jordan04n I would ask if you would listen to my own renditions of 3 of neils finest and please leave a comment, I know what you may think but I am a genuine fan and have portrayed these songs as close to the original as is possible, it is me singing, not Neil, my voice is almost the same as neil and I sing in copy key, there is no over exaggeration of the voice as many do, the vids are images with one or two of myself, you can find them by typing my user name or type Dave Radstock, thank you
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
As Neil said, and me in between....all of us...in between to make a choice to come to Jesus now or.....man in between waites...yet not to long...Lady Magdeline...another unrecogizned prophet of Jesus Christ...taking a role women were not allowed...not as a wife...a prophet..deciple who can take you home for your chosing as she would preach...the great debate goes on...devoted
So beautifully written your analysis. what insight you have. You somehow capture the spirit of the song in ways I wished I would of. This is what I wanted to convey, and somehow couldn't. Thank you jordan04n for this wonderful and refreshing interpretation.
I threw out my ND records years ago. Cant understand why now. But yesterday went to a second hand shop and found 4 of my old favourties, including this one. Now to blow off the dust from the turntable. And just where do you buy those pesky styli...
Thanks so much for putting this here. I have lost my copy of Serenade and was missing listening to this song in particular. This is my first visit to YouTube so am pleased I have come.
Poetry perfection. I listen to this 1974 song frequently. The images are strong, effective and wonderful. The story of three men in love with a woman who must be a goddess. The orchestration carries such majesty. 7 minutes of sheer delight. Neil Diamond's best creation, according to me. Thanks for posting it !
'Show me peaceful days before my youth has gone'. I had many of his records years ago and thew them out! Why do we do these things? I am so thankful that I can share the joy of Neil Diamond with you guys. Thanks for posting these songs.
The Man in between is (us). we have been given sides to choose. those who believe and those that don't. it has been left up to man wether are not he is fit to live on this earth that is heaven,if we could only open ours eyes to see that truth was staring us in the face the whole time. If we are to survive it has been left us (The Man in Between)..
I wonder if Neil knew something about the De Vinci Code-before there was a book written or a movie made about it. This song about Mary Madelene is quite stunning. just who is the man in between? is it Jesus Christ the savior of christians, or the Husband of Mary Magdelene or God himself. the question will go on answered to the end of days...
The man in between is you ...in life you have choices - which one(s) will you make? Your choice(s) will have consequences. Mary Magdelene had choices too. She could choose to stay a harlot or accept Christ as her Savior. She choose to repent of her sin and become a follower of Jesus. They were NOT married - it's not in the Bible! You have a choice now - will you accept my challenge and attempt to locate in Scripture where it says that Jesus had a wife. Seek truth. DeVinci Code is fiction.
Thanks so much for posting this! I discovered this song in the late 70's and have loved it ever since. The visuals you chose are complex and intriguing, too. In "The Essential Neil Diamond" 2 disk set from 2001 he pairs "Lady Magdalene" in a medley with "Yes, I Will" which is also from "Serenade". Interestingly, he sings the lines "make a sound that we may wonder where we are" as "make a sound that we may wonder who we are" on that CD.
being a big,big neil diamond fan. I never heard this song before. it's a beautiful song with great visual effects. Great how you capture these images to fit this greates of singer song writers..
A great song and lyrics. A good story line as well. I think Neil sounds of yesteryear were so much better than they are today. He is still a great songwritter but his songs were more moving in the 70s and 80s than they are today. This is just one example.

He was and is a great talent.

"For love is a song. for each man to sing"

The man on the right is a man undone
He'd give you his soul if you asked him for some.A child in his way for he needs to believe. That love is a song for each man to sing. The man on the left is a prize unwon
A candle unlit and a song unsung.
Believing that love is a dreamers dream,
The man on the left the me in between.

" Show me peaceful days before my youth is gone" I hope someday this can be accomplished in our lifetime. Where there will be no need for (Wars) between countries, ones race or creed,or family members, or just between ourselves. What a poet of song Neil Diamond is. Yes! Neil Diamond wrote this song back in 1974 on his Serenade Album. I guess the radio stations felt it was to long to give it any playing time. But, as you can hear it is one of his best. Take care..

This was clearly posted by a real fan - I've never forgotten this one myself since the lyrics and vocals are introspective and moving. The critics panned this album but that goes to show how superficial the critics. This song represented the golden age of Diamond, when his songwriting was at it's very best. Thanks for posting.

54nomore 4 years ago
54nomore that is an interesting comment. I'll think about that one. At any rate, this is nothing short of beautiful poetry.
Crynoutloud 4 years ago
The man in between is you ...in life you have choices - which one(s) will you make? Your choice(s) will have consequences. Mary Magdelene had choices too. She could choose to stay a harlot or accept Christ as her Savior. She choose to repent of her sin and become a follower of Jesus. They were NOT married - it's not in the Bible! You have a choice now - will you accept my challenge and attempt to locate in Scripture where it says that Jesus had a wife. Seek truth. DeVinci Code is fiction.
CaroleBrent4him 2 years ago
Nowhere in scripture does it say Jesus went to the bathroom either, so clearly he never did for 33 years.

A great song and lyrics. A good story line as well. I think Neil sounds of yesteryear were so much better than they are today. He is still a great songwritter but his songs were more moving in the 70s and 80s than they are today. This is just one example.
