His disease is growing much slower than for anyone else. I'm not quite sure. His disease (ALS) is quite stable now and he does not use that clicker anymore to speak. He uses blink switch that he activates using his cheek muscle.

But you would still be surprised how fast he can answer and carry on a conversation. The technology he uses to communicate tracks his eye movements , and when he finds the word or phrase he wants all he does is click the button in his hand.This is what I have heard at least.

He is a great man, as of now he can't even smile anymore, and he can't signal his computer through blinking either. He uses slight twitches in a muscle in his cheek to let his assistant know what he wants to say. The computer doesn't work anymore... His assistant basically finishes his words for him by guessing what Hawking wants to say. Really sad, his communication is almost gone.

I'm just now discovering Stephen Hawking. Sure, I've heard of the name but never seen the face until seeing his "Don't contact aliens," interview on MSN the other day. I was least to say shocked to see his condition, but it didn't make me any less curious of him. Upon research I've found out what a great, brave man he is. Though he is elderly and the odds are against him (have been for years, actually) I hope that he lives on. He is a brilliant, kind, wonderful human being.
