Daily life in Hell's Kitchen is overall very pleasant these days. Low crime rate with some seedy pockets left over, though this is dying. You may have some prostitution late at night and other shady characters, especially around the lower end of the neighborhood and around the Port Authority Bus Terminal (this too, is dying), but again, overall the entire neighborhood is very ethnic with good food and some good bars. As for work - yes you can find, depending on what you're are looking for.
