I used to hear the Young Snakes at Boston clubs, often in a double bill with The Dark, and I remember this song well. Though her vocals are very stylized here, they have a gutsiness that has been lacking in her voice ever since. She's very gifted, but her work since that time is so carefully crafted that it is drained of spontaneity and life.
My band played, I think, a Tuesday night with the Snakes at the Rat in 1980 or so. My guitar player was a friend with Doug's. The other band was the MIA's. We all split something like 48 dollars- ha ha. Aimee was very pretty and very sweet and I like this band so much better than Til Tuesday though I'm happy she's done well. She was into bands like Pil and NIna Hagen at this time LOL.
I was also pals with Mike in the Young Snakes. Really nice guy. Aimee was working at the Strawberries Record Store at Downtown Crossing at the time. She was very talented but in her own private world. What band were you in? I probably know you. I used to write a local music column for the Boston Real Paper. By the way, that ancient Young Snakes single is a real find. I haven't heard it for at least 25 years.
My band used to share the bill with The Snakes from time to time (Cantone's, The Rat, etc.). Doug, the guitar player was a good friend. I used to lend him my Rickenbacker as a backup guitar, as he had a penchant for breaking lots of strings on his Strat. Both Drummers (first Dave, then Michael) were also friends. Aimee never cared much for me, and the feeling was mutual. Glad she's done so well.
@AMeatBeetle Thanks so much. The insight of a musician who knew the group is most valuable. What surprises me as a remote fan though is how anyone could not adore the Personage. (More fool me)
The talking heads are a billion times more punk idiot

I wouldn't call this punk. This is as punk as the Talking Heads, by which they are not.

Interesting, primitive Aimee Mann tune. She still had a few kinks to work out at that point.
