If you want to live in this country you should speak the language. If I moved to Germany I would learn German because it would be in my best interest to asimulate and also out of due respect because the people in that country shouldn't have to acomodate me.
@ANDREW1994ization you missed the point I was trying to make. I said if a person from another country wants to live in this country they need to understand english. I said if I moved to another country I would learn that countries language out of respect towards the people in that country because they should have to acomodate me.
In Spain, a very diverse country, people who don't speak castellano are not forced to learn it in order to be able to vote, just for the simple fact that, THEY ARE SPANISH CITIZENS, BECAUSE THEY WERE BORN THERE... what kind of thoughtless government tries to repress the natural desition of a human being, about speaking the language it wants. There we have the very known hipocresy, talking about the cradle of the liberties, and repressing any time we need to defend our fictitious nationalism.
I consider it is much more important to preserve culture and diversity than disseminating the xenofobia and hatred against the different citizens in the US. The growing sick nationalism and the current intolerance towards different expretions and cultures in the US is generating this kind of repretion. I totally disagree with this kind of policies.
@lucho93062 since the majority of americans speak english, why should we have to acomodate people who don't speak english? It is the job of the immigrant to asimilate with the culture and learn the language.
@mg5679 That's a natural process that has to be understood; the same thing once happend with the german, italian and poles in the US, who assimilated the language with the time and years. But, any kind of absurd policy forcing the citizens to decide for a different language than the one they chose, applied in any country is just thoughtless, repressive and has to be rejected.
@lucho93062 any person has a right to speak any language they want in their homes. However, voting ballots should be in english only and many other things as well. If schools want to have foreign language classes that is great but other classes should be taught in english only.
@mg5679 Well, it is important to understand the current context in the US right now, we are talking about a number of 50.000.000 spanish speakers, the most of them native speakers, who are american citizens and deserve to be respected and treated equally with the mayority of americans in the country. it is important to acknowledge that reality and act with certain respect and responsability to preserve diversity over nationalism.
@lucho93062 they have a right to speak their language but they also need to learn english in order to asimilate with the majority.
If I moved to another country I would make sure that I learned that countries language in order to asimilate with the majority of people. I would also do it out of respect because they shouldn't have to catter to me because I don't speak their language.
@mg5679 Sure that's right, but i'm talking about the current american context, an almost bilingual country, where the spanish speakers are already a mayority. The thing is, ignoring this fact can't be allowed. if we were talking about two or three million people, that would be right, but now the US is a bilingual conuntry. it is right to learn the local language if you are a foreigner, but if your parents were, and you are not, you should have the right to speak the language you want.
@mg5679 I think it is imporntant to learn english, but in this case, you can't force people to learn any language in the world with policies or things like that, cus if you are american, if you were born in the US, you must be treated with the same rights to choose and decide votating in the country you live; and if we already have a mayority of this population, we must respect that fact. Diversity is wonderful and enriching, greetings from Colombia dude :)
Refusing to learn englsih is only limiting your self to opportunities to grow and progress your lifestyle. Nothing wrong with speaking spanish, but the majority is english and being spanish speaking is not a handicap like being deaf. There are more programs for the spanish speaking than there are for the deaf.
I've a good fact. There's many Puerto Ricans who speak Spanish Only - I'm one. And they're American Civilians... So, they cannot vote for....???? That's something the reps.... must think.... resps suckers....
It a mature of numbers and jet you need to understand that the chinese own most of the united states treasury bonds. How do you think they leave the country is with us dollars. So in a few year the chinese will own the united states and then we will speak chinese..
Fact is the learning of a language is very difficult. It is more likely that Latinos want to learn English but are finding it a tough go. There are also differences in abilities. Some people are good at it and others grind along for years confused.
When CNN says that immigrants are refusing to speak English I think that is an unfortunate misrepresentation.
Creo que la presencia de los latinos en EEUU es una oportunidad de aprender algo, una nueva lengua y una nueva cultura.
I am a Hispanic but live in Florida, raised by English speaking parents, I think the US should have an Official language of English, because in South Florida, everything has been given to Spanish speakers, there are 7 different Spanish language channels, all city services will only hire people who can speak spanish, Many Americans who don't speak Spanish can't find jobs, because companies can legally discriminate against non Spanish Speakers under Florida law.
@1coolguysuper I didn't have a choice to live in Florida, I was adopted from Paraguay at 5 months of age, I can't afford to go anywhere else, but for me it would be just as bad , if I had to live in the southern states with crazy fanatic Christians and KKK redneck extremists, the only decent place to live in the US might be in the Northeast like new Hampshire, Vermont, Maine
@Akirameerkat That's a complete lie,the Spanish language does last that long through generations.
I'm of mexican descent, and most mexican-Americans here in texas don't even know spanish by the 2nd generation.
But here in San Antonio,TX the city if mostly 60% Mexican-American and Central-American but you mostly hear english being spoken in public. Miami is another story.
These town in the video is a bordertown,so that would explain why. It's a town not a huge city like Miami or San Antonio.
@1coolguysuper thats not what happens here, I have worked jobs at local retail stores, so many families came in during the halloween season, many times I could here the parents and the kids speaking only in spanish, some of the kids would try talking to me in spanish, and I couldn't understand them, and I had to get an employee who can speak spanish to find out what they need, when I go to costco I hear families talk, the children as young as 3 speak spanish, the parents raise them in spanish.
@1coolguysuper When I am near Sedanos, Hispanic people come up to me and starting talking to me in spanish wither with a comment or question, and all I can say to them in "Yo no Hablo espanol" I could only imagine how hard it would be if I had to live in Miami dade county, I wouldn't be able to survive.
The history of USA began to written after the 18th century, was anglo-saxons writters with their propaganda.
When the country is full of British settlers, germans and scandinavians. Most Americans do not know that from the 16-19th century this was N.Spain. Spanish settlers and treaties and alliances between the Spanish and Indians. In U.S.A history only Anglo-Saxon propaganda and lies. They have no idea of reality. U.S. citizens are afraid today that the Hispanic culture. Pathetic Wasp
To err that Cristoforo founded America, is fallacy. His first venture was to restock at the Canary Islands, and make his way toward a different route. His discovering of "The Bahamas", was Guanahani, Colon called it San Salvador.
Spanish is spoken in USA before the arrival of any Anglo-speaking to the U.S.. During the 19th century the anglosaxons in the name of the new 13 colonies were occupying territory that was New Spain (today West of USA), pushing many Spanish-speakers go to Mexico and Cuba. The Anglo-Saxons were immigrants in those territories as today the Mexicans are, the more respect and less fear and everything would be better together. In the USA lie and distort history to live a lie.
The United States of America didn't exist in the 15th century. The 18th century is when the United States was established. The United States provides a bias history like all countries do. Perspectives from different countries tell tales of victors, not the loses of terrorities. New Spain lost their lands. War bankrupted many countries in Europe.
Tax and inflation was common. The idea of the United States was to break away from the corrupted banks, but it still happened.
There are two extremes of immigration mentality, assimilation or take-over. Most people will agree that assimilation is better (take Texas as an example), BUT as long as each immigrant, legal or illegal, knows the Constitution, pays their taxes, and loves this country, they could speak Klingon for all I care!
take a step back. english is the language of the u.s. and spanish is the language of mexico. a common language of a nation is a good thing, it unifies the citizens. lets not make life too dificult on everyone. think of it as if you were to be a guest in someone elses house or vice vesra. no one says you can't speak spanish either. just saying you will actually perform better in our society if your willing to learn english. i wouldnt expect to get too far trying to speak english when in mexico.
( Still Continued And Also The Last Part ) All the American born citizens are wanting to demand of you ( as a WILLING immigrant to this country ) is... for you to humble yourselves enough to have respect for us as a Nation and to want to be able to be apart of us and communicate with us in OUR National language . It's one thing when you are trying to learn the language, it's another when you just flat out REFUSE because you are too damn arrogant, you're in our country NOT yours SMH .
( Continued Again ) I mean, I don't think we're asking for too much, you came to OUR Country ( And lets not even get into the whole " your Native Indian ancestors were here first thing cause THEY weren't speaking Spanish either you guys are speaking the language of your Spanish conquerors )
( Continued ) Americans aren't asking for foreigners to get rid of their language or culture and totally replace it with ours, we're asking for you to incorporate ours with yours to the extent of language so we can have an understanding and be able to communicate with one another at the very least . Gosh
Okayyyyy... I DON'T think that the ONLY language you should be ALLOWED to speak in the U.S. is English and ONLY English . However, I DO think if you immigrate to the U.S. and want to live amongst other U.S. people that you should be more than WILLING to try and learn the national language of this country out of respect for the country you chose and WANTED to come to, what is wrong with that ? You guys act like we're asking for you to NEVER speak your native tongue ever again or something
Some Hispanics are full of shit. If you live in Puerto Rico, and you can't speak Spanish, your life will be impossible. So applying the same logic here in the US, learn English, you motherfuckers.
Obama tells us we need to learn other languages. He’s embarrassed for us. I for one could care less what Obama thinks; I’m doing perfectly well speaking one language. I’m getting tired of some one coming into office then looking down his nose at me. How do U say, “I wanna cut his nuts off” in Spanish? OK that’s all for now, the spell check says all my English words R spelled properly, except Barack & Obama, R these some of them foreign words that he wants me to learn?
Surely it is the overwhelming number of illegal immigrants who refuse to speak english. Join the wonderful people at ALIPAC and fight against illegal immigration.
I really fucking hate Miami. They live there their whole fucking lives and they don't even speak a lick of English. I don't mind minorities at all. I just want them to speak English. I have a lot of respect for the immigrant who try their best to learn English. It especially bothers me because my great great grandparents came her from Israel and Italy. They spoke Yiddish and Italian. If you didn't speak English no one would even talk to you at all. They learned though. Now no one learns.
@haroldfangbar Another big problem is that sometimes state governments pay to set up some ESL programs for immigrants. And they don't even give a shit about it even though they don't have to pay for these English lessons. It's ridiculous.
I especially hate Hispanic trolls that tell us that it's not urgent to learn other foreign languages but we must learn Spanish. They belive that we have to learn Spanish because Mexicans and South Americans are moving in. It's DISGUSTING.
@ttiiyy It's absolutely disgusting. I live in Connecticut so you don't see people speaking Spanish too often. In fact I was really happy when my Spanish teacher told me that there weren't enough kids to make an ESL class. There are illegal immigrants everywhere in Miami and the Spanish text books embrace it. They make it seem like Miami is a whole other Spanish speaking country. I really don't give a dead moose's last shit about their stupid culture. It's still a part of the United States.
Who the hell will believe that this 24 year old mayor's first language is English while he has such a thick accent? I guess some programs on CNN have no credibility.
The United States must have it's official language to be English only, not English and Spanish. In order to to be considered the " 'United States' of America ", we need something in common or a glue that holds all Americans together. Since religion, race, and ideas will never be the same, the only thing that will make the U.S "United", is the English language. I believe that every American must learn English, but can keep their native language t to be spoken only at home or with friends.
Sorry, but if you move to a foreign country, you should learn the language. None of my ancestors spoke English, but they learned. You don't have to stop speaking your own language, in fact I think all people should learn a second language (at least), but I would never go to live in Germany, France, China, Mexico, etc. without learning the language. It's ignorant. No need to freak out though, public school teaches all kids English. Really, the parents hurt themselves by not learning.
@AE901213 You Native Tongue should only be spoken at your home...In public English a must...Spanish people and the Spanish language is Not special then any other Foreign language...US govt big mistake is giving these Spanish speaking people a pass over every other race....Thats what you call 100% Racist
It is a demographic matter. It was suffered in Spain itself 5 centuries ago 'when' castilian, known as 'spanish' spread all over Spain for political reasons and stroke against several languages such as aragonese, asturleonese, etc, nowadays nearly to extinct. The survival languages in XXI century: galician, euskara are really in danger. Nevertheless catalan language, the first language known as spanish, it is said that keeps its strengh alive.
If I move to Germany and don't speak German I doubt they will teach classes in english for my kids. Will they bend over backwards to print documents and make employers lean english for me. NO they won't. They are'nt giving it away like America. We speak english. Learn it or get the fuck out.
@whistleblower75 NOPE, IT´S SPANISH. MANY PLACES ARE NAMED FLORIDA IN CUBA, MEXICO, AND THE REST OF LATIN AMERICA. IT HAS VARIOUS MEANINGS. IT´S EVEN A COMMON NAME FOR GIRLS. A SAINT, SANTA FLIRIDA, A CLORFUL FESTIVITY, A PLACE OF FLOWERS. PONCE DE LEON WAS THE CONQUEROR.
mexico has no history in canada!!wht are they invading canada? i saw here on the internet where everytime they start comimg down on illegals here a lot of them end up at canadas border asking for refugee status.so whats next?europe?
@steve412010 SIMPLE. CANADIANS HAVE ALWAYS BACKSTABBED LATIN AMERICA BEHIND THE AMERICANS´ASSES. THEY ARE ALSO DESCENDANTS OF THE BRITISH PIRATES WHO STOLE AND DEVASTATED LATIN AMERICAN TERRITORY. SO THEY SHOULD GET SOME DOLLLARS IN RETURN.
I live in upstate New York we have signs, documents, and applications in both Spanish and English. This is a problem because they are everywhere in the United States including in some parts in Alaska. I can understand towns and cities in America near the Mexican boarder having documents in both languages, but not states in the Northeast, Midwest or the Pacfic North West. I hear they are going up to Canada.
heck, untill WW2. there were towns in the upper midwest that had folks that could NOT speak english. some towns had german only speakers who were even 3rd generation Americans.
the war woke them up into learning english. or otherwise get into major trouble.
You see, when you live in a community surrounded by people who refuse to speak English even those who are born in the U.S. have a Spanish accent. For example, the mayor in this video. Those communities don't do any good to the Hispanic people.
Nobody should be forced to learn english, although it's good for everyone to learn languages. In Japan, students are required to learn english as a second language because it's good for trade relations with the US, so I support the government encouraging (not forcing) spanish to learn english and non spanish speakers to learn spanish.
As for the areas where ppl speak exclusively spanish, nobody is forcing non spanish speakers to go there. Although there should be some english speaking officials
no offence to anyone but im pretty sure the USA has no official language, so if you want people to speak english, first make the official language English and then you are justified to say ''This is America, speak english!'' you can even make both English and Spanish official languages like how Canada has both English and French as official tounges.
@iLuvBarRefaeli@iLuvBarRefaeli We have been an English speaking country for nearly the past 250 years. All our documents are written in English. More than 1/2 the state govt. have declared English the state language. English is considered one of the top business languages!
Canada has their documents written in both languages, formerly French, and English following nearly 30 years later. It would make sense to have two official languages.
@Shaded07 Yeah sure the majority of Americans speak English and only English, but theres over 30 million people who speak Spanish in the U.S, and keep in mind the U.S also have the territory of Puerto Rico, which has roughly 4 million mainly Spanish speakers aswell, and don`t forget your close proximity to Mexico and the rich population of Spanish speakers in the southern border states, its ignorant to say Spanish has no backround in the U.S, gow some respect to Puerto Rico and have both.
@harj2009 Yeah and have you noticed its a complete shithole now?
Hey....kinda like the countries these filthy peasants run from then cry about how great it is?!
These third world 'latinos' embrace dictators because they are always stupid socialists. We need to harvest an organ from every illegal alien, sterilize them, then punt them back to that country they love so much.
@Shaded07 Spanish has no background in the US ? America was discovered by a Spanish explorer, the south of America along with Mexico was then called " New Spain ", why do you think you have cities with Spanish names like Atascadero, Las Vegas, Los Angeles or Santa Monica ? Review your history.
@Neuroneos "... America was discovered by a Spanish explorer". Sorry to correct you but Christopher Columbus was Italian; and by the way America was named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was an italian too :-)
@Neuroneos So what? The Spanish Empire already collapsed. Besides, the industrialization originated from Englad. It's that technology that made the US the superpower today. Say you can speak Spanish today, so what? Spain is now in a shitty condition, waiting for EU's assistance. It's simply not the empire that it used to be. So how many Americans are moving to Spain and beg for jobs? Get over it.
@ttiiyy I was just showing that Spanish had a considerable role in the history of America, because some people said that it has no background in the USA. I don't think you got it.
@DemocraticEmpire Waldseemüller was a cartographer who mistakenly gave credits to Vespucci for the discovery of South America, he later corrected that mistake in Tabura Terre Nove. The thing that initiated the Spanish colonization was when Colombus discovered the Antilles, he was not Spanish but I rectified that mistake in my latest post, he was Italian but he was going there on behalf of Spain's catholic monarchs.
@DemocraticEmpire What? Oh, my God. I am Spanish and Canary Islands were not found by Colombus, in fact they were a part of Spain since two decades before his arrival. Colón travelled four times to America and he arrived to the continent in the third trip. Then, Spaniards went to the New World in order to conquer its territory. Your history started before the arrival of Pilgrims in the May Flower, American people. Cabeza de Vaca and Ponce de León are the true parents of Florida.
@bumeranotaku the canary islands weren't found by columbus totally agree with that but neither by the spanish.they weren't finally conquered before the european's rediscovery of america, that's why columbus departed from la gomera instead of tenerife(the main island)that was conquered in1496.
@bumeranotaku LOL your ignorant and stupid, there were already people in Florida, the Seminoles and other Native groups! Ponce De Leon is not the father of anything!
@numonemofan Okay, under your point of view Romulo is not the father of Rome or George Washington is not the American Pater Patriae. I am not ignorant, the trouble with that is you cannot distinguish between territory and political entity. Florida is a political concept with a name and with a frontier, and it is due to the Spanish colonization. Your dear Seminoles were not nothing, they did not know the concept of state. Hala, a llorar a Jerusalén.
@Shaded07 Spanish has no background in the US? Dear, grab a history book and a map. MOST of what today is the United States was a Spanish colony FIRST. Do you have an idea about how many state and city names are in Spanish? Did you know that first European establishment in what you call the US was a Spanish one (founded ironically by Puerto Rico's governor, and now PR is a US colony)? It was the US who invaded all those Spanish-speaking territories and imposed English. Learn about your country.
@Shaded07 NO BACKGROUND IN THE U.S.? MAYBE YOU MEANT IN THE THIRTEEN COLONIES. IN WHAT IS NOW THE US, SPANISH WAS SPOKEN BEFORE ENGLISH.FLORIDA AND ALL THE SOUTHWEST HAD SPANISH SPEAKING SETTLERS. SOME NAMES : LA FLORIDA, SAN AGUSTIN, BOCA RATON, ALBUQUERQUE, SAN DIEGO, LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO, LAS VEGAS, CALIFORNIA, LAS CRUCES, NEVADA, COLORADO, SANTA ANA, AMARILLO, SAN JOSE, SANTA FE, LAREDO, AND HUNDREDS MORE.
@Shaded07 Actually much of the United States has a "background" in Spanish. Florida and the southwest have Spanish origins and the Treaty of Guadalupe guarantees Spanish and Indian language speakers "the free enjoyment of their liberty and property" which includes preserving their language.
@Shaded07 . Spanish has no background in the U.S, really? Well, here are some names of places in America to consider if such background exists or not: Los Angeles, Florida, California, San Diego, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Texas, Alamo, Alcatraz, Boca Ratón, Cape Canaveral, El Paso, Fresno, Las Cruces, Las Vegas, San Antonio, San Francisco, Santa Fe.
@gabboet What's your point? Names of places have nothing to do with official documents. Keep in mind that the number of places that are named in English is way larger than the ones that are named in Spanish.
If you are so smart, why don't you list some important official documents that were written in Spanish. Maybe that will make you look less retarded.
All laws, decrees, regulations, and provisions emanating from any of the three supreme powers of this State, which from their nature require publication, shall be published in English and Spanish.
@Shaded07 Really? Are you sure about that or have you forgotten about the US Southwest... Let me give a little history lecture here, the Southwest was part of the Spanish Crown from about 200 years and the Mexican government for about 60 years... Way before the United States got this part of the country, so next time you say Spanish does no background in US History remember this
I here more spanish in this country than English. Television on Public Transportation are majoirly in spanish, signs in spanish, man I am so sick of this. Am I seeing the stupidity or what? Of course if you are a foreigner your are bound to speak your native tongue, but you come to a country with its primary language, you better learn it. You speak english and want to move to russia, learn and speak russian. It brings so much dishonor when you try to not speak the native tongue of the country.
It's funny how "Americans" want all immigrants to learn the language of America, something their ancestors didn't do as immigrants. When the first immigrants to America came, what did they do? (:
Killed off all they can and force their own rules onto territories they claimed as their own and call English the language of America.
Too bad it isn't, I guess we all should learn Native Americans' languages.
It's just another mission for America..next: everyone has to be Christian in America!
Something that I dont understand is... Noone in Japan is having a debate about people there not speaking Japanese. Same goes for the African nations, Mexico, etc
Why is it only in white countries you see this? The world is so unfair its like white people get punished for developing successful nations... Were third world peoples get rewarded for being poor and corrupt.... Survival of the strongest no longer applies, but survival of the weakest does...
There are RACIST people in every ethnic group. Some Hispanics use racist terms such as white trash or negros or chinks to attack those people that tell hispanics to learn English.
@ttiiyy well hispanic is not a race and these hispanics are dumb because many afrohispanics exist and many whites exist. but dont generalize them all because i know many spanish speaking people who try to learn english. please its not that easy. english is a hard language to learn, spanish is not. spanish is based of one language which is LATIN! and if you can speak spanish you can understand french italian and portuguese quite easily. english has stolen from many languages like german!
@lui920 English didn't "steal" anything. It is just like any other language that is influenced by other cultures and adapts it to it's language. Spanish has done the exact same thing. Many new words were added to Spanish and many other languages from contact from the Americas.
America is an English speaking country. I think it should be the official language. Why that has never been implemented as a law I don't know. I don't mind people speaking different languages, in fact, I want to learn other languages. I'm not gonna go to France, or Germany and expect them to know English. If I chose to live there, I'd have to know their language. Thats all, if they want to live in America and get by, then learn English.
@1RedshirtXLG If English was the official language of USA nothing would change. When a group of immigrants becomes large, they create a market in which they don´t need to learn english,i´m not agree with it but indeed in some areas of USA such as Miami, learning english is not essential. The same happens in my country where the official language is Spanish, but the vast majority of British and German immigrants despite living here for over 20 years do not speak a single word of Spanish.
@Ximena0e That's the problem with multiculturalism now is it? Whats wrong with assimilating to the country you want to live in? You want to be here, just learn english. I'm not saying they have suddenly stop speaking their native tongue. But if people who come here have learn English to become citizens then why not make it the official language?
@1RedshirtXLG I´m agree,if i lived in Japan i would make the effort to learn their language,i would speak my language with my people but i´d never go to any shop expecting a shop assistant to speak to me in Spanish,it´s a matter of respect.Don´t know exactly why the US has no official language, maybe coz some states were Spanish speaking when they were incorporated to the US,maybe it´s a question of respect to the native american tongues,i think that´s why Mexico neither has an official language
@1RedshirtXLG No,Spanish is not the official language of Mexico, though it´s spoken by the vast majority of mexicans,it´s the de facto language, like English in the US.
@Ximena0e Interesting. I never knew that. Well thank you for that bit of information. My point still stands however since 99.9% of business done in mexico(voting, reading etc) is conducted in Spanish, 99.9% of business done in the U.S. should be in English.
@1RedshirtXLG Yeah,in theory you´re right but in practice is not so simple,i mean there are more Spanish speaking people in your country than in Spain itself, many of those immigrants have a poor education and don´t even write their own language correctly but as i said they´ve created a huge market in all sectors in which anything u wanna sell them (insurances,etc...) must do it in their language,...
@1RedshirtXLG hence that "press 1 for English,2 for Sp." and that´s why today more and more jobs require bilingual employees. Is that fair? i don´t know, but i think that in any country of the world the massive immigration is a double edged sword.
@Ximena0e Well another reason would be that for those who are unwilling to learn spanish, they are subjected to what I've been hearing is "modern day slavery" where employers take advantage of them because they don't speak or understand the language. Thats not to say there aren't honest business owners, there are. But you get the few bad apples who do this kind of crap because it's "cheap".
@1RedshirtXLG That´s a good point, they are at a huge disadvantage compared to those immigrants who learn english, but the problem is that there is a large number of mexican immigrants that don´t know how to read nor write and more than 300.000 farm workers in California,etc...are indigenous people who neither speak Spanish, but indigenous tongues like Maya or Purepecha,so i guess it´s all even harder for them.
@Ximena0e Thats why I'm all for helping them. If they're having trouble learning English, Spanish or any other language then assistance should be given.
Some parts of the US were settled by Spanish-speaking people long before the English language became dominant. Places like Florida, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona were home to Spanish-Americans even before the US gained independence from Britain. Other states like California and Nevada were settled by Spanish-speakers in the late 18th century. Remember these territories were part of Spain (until 1821) and later Mexico (until 1848). So why can't those people living there, keep using Spainsh?
they should stop with the nonsense.. America will be a legitimate bilingual country in a few decades time, and there's nothing they can do. The big deal of latinos living in america don´t learn english bc they don't need it to survive in certain places.. it's just a matter of necessity. No hay que saber inglés para crecer, vivir y morir en Miami por ejemplo...
@CabriniDream That's bullshit because we expect every country to learn English and they do! Almost every country in the world speaks English along with their language. That is why we are so pompous and arrogant. We can make the Dutch speak English in their own country so should the Mexicans or whatever. I personally hate the fact that we are so obtuse about that point. We should be more like the Dutch. They speak four languages and smoke marijuana...
I'm from Rome, Europe; USA citzens living here (also after 10 years) do not speak a single word of the local official language (in this case, italian); no one think to get rid them couse they refuse to speak our language; so why hispanics would do the same in the USA? thanks in advance!
@mrperson541 Many countries like Mexico are in America. USA not only is America. Cualquier persona es libre de decidir lo que quiere hacer son su idioma y mas en un paìs como Estados Unidos.
The Catholic King Juan Carlos I and the Queen Sofia from Spain have just inaugurated a Spaniard College in Shangai, China....Chinese want to learn the spanish language, In Russia there's a very prestigious spanish college, russians want to learn spanish and the flamenco music, many latin american teachers teach in Moscow and let them know their beautiful latin american folklore dances, example the Mariachi, la cumbia, la salsa :)
@1231violin I don't think it is as much that people don't want to learn spanish, because I do... I am taking classes. People just want spanish speakers to learn our language. I mean if you move here you should at least try to learn english. It is kind of disrespectful to come to go to a different country and expect them to speak your language, like I have experienced in Miami.
...Belgium they speak 4 languages, flemish, german, french and english...back there if you don't speak more than one language, you won't be able to get a job!!! :)
the language of MIGUEL DE CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, it's roots coming from the deep latin roots, LATIN/ROMANCE LANGUAGES: Rumanian, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, Catalan, Gallician, are one of the most beautiful languages in the world and one of the hardest...Cervantes was a jewish sephardite spaniard who was born in Spain and the author of the DON QUIJOTE DE LA MANCHA....the most read book in the world after the Bible...many europeans are multilingual!!! example Belgium they speak 4...
Try South Florida, Every language in the world is spoken here. Local governemnt information is provided in English, Spanish & Creole. Also tourism uses French, German, & Portuguese. Some other languages linked to tourism also include Russian, Swedish, or any few more. That makes speaking even proper English impossible to do since most costumers in this market speak a language other than English. I am myself Hispanic and learned British English before I came here, I had problems too. .
why should people learn english if this is america? english didnt originate in this continent so why should you be forced to learn a language that has no relevance to north america.
if anything people should learn native north american languages or get out !!!
If that happened, nothing would ever get done. When the white men duke it out, the english-speaking ones won. And that's the language that unified American. Besides what Native American Language do you know? If none, you would have to leave too.
@iLuvBarRefaeli We have been an English speaking country for nearly the past 250 years. All our documents are written in English. More than 1/2 the state govt. have declared English the state language. English is considered one of the top business languages!
Being spanish speaking is not a handicap, being deaf is a handicap. There are not many universities that offers sign language courses and there are some universities limiting their foreign language courses to just spanish. I am not against any one speaking their native language as it is their right.
I'm Hispanic and I came to this country in my 20s and I busted my ass learning English. If you want to live here, then learn the language. However, I do understand that seniors (65+) might have issues learning a new language so i have no problem with them. But there are a lot of young people (my sister) who can't even say a proper English sentence, I do understand that she is busy working and taking care of my ill mother, but I've told her that she should learn it.
wtf im from rio bravo and i have lots of friends in el cenizo i dont think its a big deal why the fuck should they have to learn english if they dont want to fucking talk english let them its there life why do you guys come and judge us fucking ''GRINGOS''.!
bcuz it causes problems for the english speaking majority. ever seen the warzones where the opposite sides speak different languages? it's tearing the country apart and if it goes on then await "New Aztlan", or at least heavy rioting and "language war" in the next 50 years. Switzerland is the exception to the rule. If america can do like them then fine... but i dunno... doubt it...

I said if I moved to another country I would learn that countries language out of respect towards the people in that country because they should have to acomodate me.
mg5679 1 month ago
In Spain, a very diverse country, people who don't speak castellano are not forced to learn it in order to be able to vote, just for the simple fact that, THEY ARE SPANISH CITIZENS, BECAUSE THEY WERE BORN THERE... what kind of thoughtless government tries to repress the natural desition of a human being, about speaking the language it wants. There we have the very known hipocresy, talking about the cradle of the liberties, and repressing any time we need to defend our fictitious nationalism.
lucho93062 1 month ago
I consider it is much more important to preserve culture and diversity than disseminating the xenofobia and hatred against the different citizens in the US. The growing sick nationalism and the current intolerance towards different expretions and cultures in the US is generating this kind of repretion. I totally disagree with this kind of policies.
lucho93062 1 month ago
@lucho93062 since the majority of americans speak english, why should we have to acomodate people who don't speak english? It is the job of the immigrant to asimilate with the culture and learn the language.
mg5679 1 month ago
@mg5679 That's a natural process that has to be understood; the same thing once happend with the german, italian and poles in the US, who assimilated the language with the time and years. But, any kind of absurd policy forcing the citizens to decide for a different language than the one they chose, applied in any country is just thoughtless, repressive and has to be rejected.
lucho93062 1 month ago
@lucho93062 any person has a right to speak any language they want in their homes. However, voting ballots should be in english only and many other things as well. If schools want to have foreign language classes that is great but other classes should be taught in english only.
mg5679 1 month ago
@mg5679 Well, it is important to understand the current context in the US right now, we are talking about a number of 50.000.000 spanish speakers, the most of them native speakers, who are american citizens and deserve to be respected and treated equally with the mayority of americans in the country. it is important to acknowledge that reality and act with certain respect and responsability to preserve diversity over nationalism.
lucho93062 1 month ago
@lucho93062 they have a right to speak their language but they also need to learn english in order to asimilate with the majority.
If I moved to another country I would make sure that I learned that countries language in order to asimilate with the majority of people. I would also do it out of respect because they shouldn't have to catter to me because I don't speak their language.
mg5679 1 month ago
@mg5679 Sure that's right, but i'm talking about the current american context, an almost bilingual country, where the spanish speakers are already a mayority. The thing is, ignoring this fact can't be allowed. if we were talking about two or three million people, that would be right, but now the US is a bilingual conuntry. it is right to learn the local language if you are a foreigner, but if your parents were, and you are not, you should have the right to speak the language you want.
lucho93062 1 month ago
@lucho93062 You can speak whatever language you want. However, the people who speak english should not have to catter to that person.
mg5679 1 month ago
@mg5679 I think it is imporntant to learn english, but in this case, you can't force people to learn any language in the world with policies or things like that, cus if you are american, if you were born in the US, you must be treated with the same rights to choose and decide votating in the country you live; and if we already have a mayority of this population, we must respect that fact. Diversity is wonderful and enriching, greetings from Colombia dude :)
lucho93062 1 month ago
Refusing to learn englsih is only limiting your self to opportunities to grow and progress your lifestyle. Nothing wrong with speaking spanish, but the majority is english and being spanish speaking is not a handicap like being deaf. There are more programs for the spanish speaking than there are for the deaf.

Donde se asienta hoy la ciudad de Miami hubo una misión española, que fue el primer asentamiento europeo en la región.

It was the US who invaded all those Spanish-speaking territories and imposed English. Learn about your country.

SOME NAMES : LA FLORIDA, SAN AGUSTIN, BOCA RATON, ALBUQUERQUE, SAN DIEGO, LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO, LAS VEGAS, CALIFORNIA, LAS CRUCES, NEVADA, COLORADO, SANTA ANA, AMARILLO, SAN JOSE, SANTA FE, LAREDO, AND HUNDREDS MORE.
budfr 9 months ago
@Shaded07 Actually much of the United States has a "background" in Spanish. Florida and the southwest have Spanish origins and the Treaty of Guadalupe guarantees Spanish and Indian language speakers "the free enjoyment of their liberty and property" which includes preserving their language.
Spengler56 9 months ago
@Shaded07 . Spanish has no background in the U.S, really? Well, here are some names of places in America to consider if such background exists or not: Los Angeles, Florida, California, San Diego, Colorado, Montana, Nevada, Texas, Alamo, Alcatraz, Boca Ratón, Cape Canaveral, El Paso, Fresno, Las Cruces, Las Vegas, San Antonio, San Francisco, Santa Fe.
gabboet 9 months ago
@gabboet What's your point? Names of places have nothing to do with official documents. Keep in mind that the number of places that are named in English is way larger than the ones that are named in Spanish.
If you are so smart, why don't you list some important official documents that were written in Spanish. Maybe that will make you look less retarded.

All laws, decrees, regulations, and provisions emanating from any of the three supreme powers of this State, which from their nature require publication, shall be published in English and Spanish.
—California Constitution, 1849, Art. XI Sec. 21.
gabboet 8 months ago

It makes me sick.
ttiiyy 1 year ago
@ttiiyy well hispanic is not a race and these hispanics are dumb because many afrohispanics exist and many whites exist. but dont generalize them all because i know many spanish speaking people who try to learn english. please its not that easy. english is a hard language to learn, spanish is not. spanish is based of one language which is LATIN! and if you can speak spanish you can understand french italian and portuguese quite easily. english has stolen from many languages like german!
lui920 1 year ago

1RedshirtXLG 1 year ago
@1RedshirtXLG If English was the official language of USA nothing would change. When a group of immigrants becomes large, they create a market in which they don´t need to learn english,i´m not agree with it but indeed in some areas of USA such as Miami, learning english is not essential. The same happens in my country where the official language is Spanish, but the vast majority of British and German immigrants despite living here for over 20 years do not speak a single word of Spanish.
Ximena0e 1 year ago
@Ximena0e That's the problem with multiculturalism now is it? Whats wrong with assimilating to the country you want to live in? You want to be here, just learn english. I'm not saying they have suddenly stop speaking their native tongue. But if people who come here have learn English to become citizens then why not make it the official language?
1RedshirtXLG 1 year ago
@1RedshirtXLG I´m agree,if i lived in Japan i would make the effort to learn their language,i would speak my language with my people but i´d never go to any shop expecting a shop assistant to speak to me in Spanish,it´s a matter of respect.Don´t know exactly why the US has no official language, maybe coz some states were Spanish speaking when they were incorporated to the US,maybe it´s a question of respect to the native american tongues,i think that´s why Mexico neither has an official language
Ximena0e 1 year ago
@Ximena0e Mexico doesn't have an official language?
1RedshirtXLG 1 year ago
@1RedshirtXLG No,Spanish is not the official language of Mexico, though it´s spoken by the vast majority of mexicans,it´s the de facto language, like English in the US.
Ximena0e 1 year ago
@Ximena0e Interesting. I never knew that. Well thank you for that bit of information. My point still stands however since 99.9% of business done in mexico(voting, reading etc) is conducted in Spanish, 99.9% of business done in the U.S. should be in English.
1RedshirtXLG 1 year ago
@1RedshirtXLG Yeah,in theory you´re right but in practice is not so simple,i mean there are more Spanish speaking people in your country than in Spain itself, many of those immigrants have a poor education and don´t even write their own language correctly but as i said they´ve created a huge market in all sectors in which anything u wanna sell them (insurances,etc...) must do it in their language,...
Ximena0e 1 year ago
@1RedshirtXLG hence that "press 1 for English,2 for Sp." and that´s why today more and more jobs require bilingual employees. Is that fair? i don´t know, but i think that in any country of the world the massive immigration is a double edged sword.
Ximena0e 1 year ago
@Ximena0e Well another reason would be that for those who are unwilling to learn spanish, they are subjected to what I've been hearing is "modern day slavery" where employers take advantage of them because they don't speak or understand the language. Thats not to say there aren't honest business owners, there are. But you get the few bad apples who do this kind of crap because it's "cheap".
1RedshirtXLG 1 year ago
@1RedshirtXLG sorry I mean unwilling to learn english.
I've been having trouble typing lately.
1RedshirtXLG 1 year ago
@1RedshirtXLG That´s a good point, they are at a huge disadvantage compared to those immigrants who learn english, but the problem is that there is a large number of mexican immigrants that don´t know how to read nor write and more than 300.000 farm workers in California,etc...are indigenous people who neither speak Spanish, but indigenous tongues like Maya or Purepecha,so i guess it´s all even harder for them.
Ximena0e 1 year ago
@Ximena0e Thats why I'm all for helping them. If they're having trouble learning English, Spanish or any other language then assistance should be given.

Some parts of the US were settled by Spanish-speaking people long before the English language became dominant. Places like Florida, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona were home to Spanish-Americans even before the US gained independence from Britain. Other states like California and Nevada were settled by Spanish-speakers in the late 18th century. Remember these territories were part of Spain (until 1821) and later Mexico (until 1848). So why can't those people living there, keep using Spainsh?
jcrbaztan 1 year ago
they should stop with the nonsense..

CabriniDream 1 year ago
@CabriniDream That's bullshit because we expect every country to learn English and they do! Almost every country in the world speaks English along with their language. That is why we are so pompous and arrogant. We can make the Dutch speak English in their own country so should the Mexicans or whatever. I personally hate the fact that we are so obtuse about that point. We should be more like the Dutch. They speak four languages and smoke marijuana...

@1231violin I don't think it is as much that people don't want to learn spanish, because I do... I am taking classes. People just want spanish speakers to learn our language. It is kind of disrespectful to come to go to a different country and expect them to speak your language, like I have experienced in Miami.

I am myself Hispanic and learned British English before I came here, I had problems too. .

Why not english speakers learn spanish???
Specially in the west USA, where the first european culture was Spanish.
Anglos should to be less egocentrics...

why should people learn english if this is america? english didnt originate in this continent so why should you be forced to learn a language that has no relevance to north america.
if anything people should learn native north american languages or get out !!!

If that happened, nothing would ever get done. When the white men duke it out, the english-speaking ones won. And that's the language that unified American. Besides what Native American Language do you know? If none, you would have to leave too.
