I'm overwhelmed with this shared love for my beloved band, Nine Inch Nails. I read all the comments on the first page and agree with all of them so much. Especially the two top-rated comments. Nine Inch Nails is amazing and helped me get through tough times in my life.
One of my favorite things to do with this album was get torched on pot and listen to it front to back with noise cancelling headphones. The album is so layered with bottomless sound that there are visuals when you close your eyes.
When that organ creeps into the mix midway though and begins to build up it feels like your slowly descending into hell. The most powerful song on the most powerful album ever created.
the downward spiral is what stabilized my suicidal thoughts in my childhood, instead of taking the hate out on myself (slitting my wrists) i would listen to nin to stabilize the anger and hate.
@frozenbloodbullets Thank you dude. Everybody criticizes me for listening to NIN at age seventeen because they think it's suicidal. If anything, it makes you not want to commit suicide at all, you get to vent your emotions and listen to great music, and all with the knowledge that Trent went through a suicidal phase and got over it. This make me even more compelled to be optimistic and excel in life.
my comment by no means is offensive or to express any form of dislike.. it was just a statement i made.. d first thing dat came 2 my mind wen i hrd dis stuff...
@tulasidharan "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things." (Isaiah 45:7, KJV) I still don't understand why people comment on music they dislike; seems like such a waste of time... NIN is the shit!
@bheeter7 It's easy to understand. Why do you want to comment on music you like ? People commenting on music they dislike generally have the same reason, same degree of time wastage.
I saw this performed live back then at the Shrine in Springfield w/Marilyn Manson and Jim Rose Circus Sideshow. I've been to a lot of concerts, this is still my favorite. The cloud of pot was very clear, hovering in the Shrine. The security/cops just stared on as young girls went topless, made out, and smoke pot. The girl I was with was in her 30's (older than I at the time) as was dumbfounded, but enjoyed it. Trent Reznor is truly talented.
@AcmeNewsLLC I saw the same tour but it was in Carbondale IL; I was 16y and went with my cousin. The seating was first come first serve; amazingly we got first row!! So much fun even though I got kicked in the head bc of a mosh pit but it was worth it, AWESOME!!
This song has always blown me away. I used to sit in my room, crank this song and play the guitar to it. So relaxing. So much energy. Love you Nails for all you've done. You're a genius Trent
When I bought the downward spiral album, 96 i think, I dropped a quad of acid and sat there all fucking night watching the colors. Dont think I was ever quite right after that night.
trent reznor can always steal the epitome of any emotion and put it in a song that captures it perfectly, esspecially emotions like self hate, emptiness, loneliness, depression, rage. i love Nine Inch nails
I saw this tour in g.boro nc. I was in high school and it changed everything. Sounds really cheesy but I am 33 now and I still remember that night as a defining moment in my life.
My First NIN record that i heard was Pretty Hate Machine. I didn't own it but i heard it. i hated it at first, but after listening to it alot i grew to love it. Now NIN is one of my all time favorites . then i went out and Bought Broken. Then i got downward spiral
I count you lucky as well! I was born 1993, I AM 16, and I am surrounded by Lady Gaga and Six AM...it effing blows. My Mp3 player has Nine Inch Nails, A perfect Circle, Tool, Tori Amos, and one Jefferson Airplane song!
I listened to the same music when I was your age too. You should check out JA, they're really great. Give 'Surrealistic Pillow' a listen if you can, Grace Slick has a really beautiful voice.
I had the cassette of PHM, listend to it until it was almost worn out. Had the pleasure to see NIN @ the 1st Lollapalooza. Officially became a hardcore fan. Broken, literally saved my life when it came out, living in Hollywood at the time (cliche, I know). Saw NIN at an unannounced show 836 Highland, best show of my life. Have been following Trent and NIN for years and will for many more, I am sure.
thank fuck that my teens were spent listening to nin.the downward spiral was the first nin album that i bought, when it came out,and it absolutely blew me away.still does!!!peace!!!
One of the best songs of all time on... actually not my favorite NIN album (but most other peoples). Fixed is actually one of my favorit, though it's really an EP.
personally i think that self destruct's light show is way better than any other nin light show. the enormous screen is just sweet. i love how the band members will sometimes fade into the screen and then later reappear.
Brings me back to both shows at MSG. They had to postpone one show a day because Fink hurt his hand. Anyone remember who opened up? Marilyn Manson, Pop Will Eat Itself and the Jim Rose Circus. What amazing shows they were.
saw this live in seattle when it came through...really ground breaking at the time but the latest show in seattle for the newest tour was easily the best of more than 100 shows from various performers that i have ever seen.
i have never been to such a visually and emotionally stimulating experience at a live show before...happy that i have tickets for the gorge amphitheater (sasquatch fest) already. to be able to see NIN twice inside of 12 months is some kind of wonderful dream; trent is at the top of his game right now. the show falls on my birthday as well...could not be more perfect.
Now that Eraser and Hurt footage from SD tour are up, would love to see the third 'film' portion ... The Downward Spiral. Amazing stuff, especially at that time!
I know I will get flamed for this but this was not filmed in 1995. Trent's memory must be a bit hazy. This and the hurt live video were filmed in October of 1994 at the Universal Ampitheatre in California.

I agree that Trent was definitely a bit, "hazy" at the time, but what gives you any idea that this was not filmed at any other show? I'm sure they didn't use different visuals for just that show, there must be many shows with that look very similar. And I doubt that you can recall everything exactly to the point where you can remember what positions everybody was in or their expressions or the little subtle differences between the many shows. (I'm not flaming you, just pointing out inaccuracies)
