  • FINALLY! A good tutorial on how to use HDR in photoshop ! You have no idea how long I've wanted to learn something (anything really) about it

    thanks !

  • What is HDR?

  • @vincecreek High Dynamic Range. Making use of the full range of color and exposure values in an image = no lost detail.

  • THANKS

  • To learn how to achieve true HDR photographs with your own camera, please search out Pro Photo Results / HDR on YouTube

  • Go check my channel you can learn how to create theme background for your channel and you can also learn how to create HDR in PHOTOMATIX ;)

  • You talk a bit like Bob Ross

  • TYVM! Saved my day.

  • How do you save them as regular image files?

  • @Kfo00793

    just save as JPEG?

  • ;-)

  • I use Photomatrix instead. It also does the tone Mapping which is amazing.

  • wich software do you think it's better in order to obtain hdr photos?

    thanks

  • you ruinging the original...

  • Checkout my other HDR tutorials, they are much better :)

  • Check out my other he'd tutorials,

  • Thanks for you're help, by the way this man is running windows.. I'm a mac freak and photoshop on my and all iMac's looks way different, also why would he lie about such a simple thing LOL.

  • Do you want to learn 90 most professional photoshop tricks? if yes then get it now from freephotoshop .t k

  • blaaa!!

  • dumb tutorial

  • this was one bad tutorial.

  • audio is out of sync.

  • thanks for sharing, good enough for the beginner like myself! =)

  • audio out of sync

  • no it doesnt.

  • It's funny making a large deal about 32 bit and the speed nowadays.

Back then it was top notch! xD

  • The final image is still not good enough. Needs more contrast tweaking.

  • Video is out of sync with the audio. I was a bit confused when following it.

  • the audio in in sync - your flash player is outdated - the problem is on your side

  • No it's not. Listen to the audio at 4:15. He says go to IMAGE>MODE>16 bit... all while still adjusting the lever.

Try actually following it, it looks ok at first glance but you'll notice when following him that his voice is way ahead of his actions.

  • watch the video again - the audio is in sync - 5:35 is the perfect example and is just after your example...so my original statements hold true

  • No he does what he says in 5:35 at 5:46

Also notice 5:54 he says "click and drag". You hear him click as well, but on screen he is still moving his arrow as if he's speaking of the dark foreground.

But really, follow him on the program and do it with him. You'll understand then.

He seems to do things in intervals which is why it looks like at first glance that he is in sync. Except the examples I made.

  • It does jump out of sync around the 4.50 mark but then comes back. It's got nothing to do with flash player being out of date as I'm on a new system with everything updated.

  • what type of file should save it in? there's no .jpeg type in the option there, :( if i save it in TIF type, it will take almost 200mb of space in HD. woooo

  • video seems to be a bit out of sync. I'd rather stick with Photomatix Pro

  • I would love to see an updated version of this tutorial using CS4, menus and labeling are different in CS4.

  • @crsouser I have posted a CS5 version of it

Also check out photoshopCAFE . com/video for a new DVD coming out in a week

  • I go on file and and merge HDR and then i add the open files, and it does it, but then is says i have to Manually set EV why does it come up with this? :S

  • Unless your camera stores the EV info in the EXIF data, you'll have to set those levels yourself. Cheaper digital cameras probably don't have that data, but a DSLR should. Also, make sure you're using the original files and not something that's already been edited and may have lost its EXIF data. I'm not sure of your exact situation, but those are some possibilities.

  • in the file tab under automate it doesnt say merge to hdr what do i do?

  • Old Photoshop?

  • get CS3

  • old photoshop

  • ok thanks

  • what do i do if i only have photoshop 7?

  • try downloading photomatrix- it is free to trial (unlimited access but leaves a watermark on the processed images that you then need to photoshop out) it and has all the features you need to create high quality HDR photos.

  • Hi, where did you download it from. I have searches all over the place and they are all paid links?. Thanks

  • crying!

  • damn i wish i can watch movie rendered with HDR

  • very nice, thank you for the info.

  • good tutorial! thnx!

  • the result is flat and boring. Better to mask using traditional methods.

  • i agree

  • How would you mask using tradition methods?

    Thanks

  • I take multiple exposures for optimal highlights and shadows. Then combine them into one file. Using layer masks I use either large soft-edge brushes or the gradient tool to erase/restore info. Very basic.

  • what do you mean by traditional methods?

  • I agree with you, although I'm new to this.

    I've seen much better HDRs.

  • You're judging the HDR's quality from a low res Youtube clip. That's laughable in itself.

  • True, a video is not entirely true to what you'll se on your screen, but still Photoshop is inferior to others when it comes to HDR.

  • any suggestions as to other ways to render HDR for an HDR n00b like myself?

  • thank you!

  • Tip:

    USE A TRIPOD. LULS

  • That was good, thanks

  • YOUR NOT RUNNING WINDOWS!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Very cool - it's a shame you didn't show us the fullscreen version, for that better view of the final picture!

I might give it a go soon...

  • Nice bracketing, pro. The first 2 shots are almost identical.

  • Thanks for the demo!!!

I will now shoot in bracket mode everywhere! I did sometimes anyway to choose between the best shots. HDR is a whole new game! Its like painting!!! Check out Dave Cohens HDRs on flickr!!!

  • so to do this, you need to take three similiar photos, with different exposure, and then do this?

  • correct, but you can always take more than three different exposure shots.

  • but those 3 exposure need to have a sense , 1 exposure when the sky looks great second exposure when the mountains look nice and other when the foreground looks ok.

  • What kind of mounts do you use? can you take the camera off the mount between shots or do you have an arsenal of cams? I can now do time and iso bracketing with my powershot sd790is. I just need the software... I love astrophotos. Is HDR like stacking?

  • ahh lol thx :D

  • Meldonnn

You don't do that with photoshop, you have

to increase and decrease the exposure on your

    camera.

  • PLease i start with PS. How can i expose to shadows, highlight and midtone. I mean which tool i need for it thx :)

  • excellent tutorial.

I looked for a while on a good tutorial and this is the best I've found

  • omg, your apple macintosh computer is so fast!

  • where can i get that effect

  • ha - really bad example of hdr there - the image looks almost exactly thew same as one at the start! the video is out of sync!

    haha

  • I wouldn't laugh but I see what you mean about the final image.

  • Check out my other HDR video, much better. This one was done at 3 am :)

  • You say that this is a new feature of CS3 but it's exactly the same as CS2. At least all the functions you used are.

  • It didn't have auto alignment in CS2

  • Yes it does. There's a box you can check

  • Whoa, around the middle I noticed that the video and audio are quite horribly out of sync... about a 5-second delay.

  • never used to be that way, must hav got that way on youtube

  • for that result, the shadow & highlight adjustment would have worked the same.

  • Actually no, but thanks for the comment

  • is cs3 1 better?

  • i want to buy cs3 message me and let me kno

  • I have photoshop CS3 but my automate menu does not include merge HDR option, it only had "batch", "PDF presentation", and "create droplet" do i have the wrong version or something?

  • hey,hi there...i've got the same problem at the moment,ur post a month old..did u find an answer to this???

  • good job man

  • What the fuck has accent to do with photoshop?

    Get a life moron.

    Anyways,great tutorial man,i appreciate it :)

  • What the fuck? Hahahaha.

  • Hi, great tutorial!!, but I am having problems with the HDR merge. It says that there is not enough dynamic range in the photos to construct a useful HDR photo. I tried to create 3 different pictures, one with shadows, one with highlights and one normal, but it is still not working.

    any suggestions?

    regards

  • I have the same problem, did you figure it out?

  • This is awesome! I had been creating HDRs with Photomatix but had found it rather annoying so I was looking for an accurate PS tutorial. I think I've found just the right one. :)

  • Can you do HDR on CR2? I've heard older versions don't have it.

Would Photomatrix be a better alternative if someone has CS2?

  • Very helpful, thanks a lot

  • so realy this is not photography but computer or digital art, great video do you have one on time lapse photography of the night sky

  • fucking awesome.. holy crap i will start right away to learn this cool stuff

  • how do I save this HDR photo into JPEG? If I want to use it for the web or some only .jpg compatible device... I don't have the option there when clicking save as

  • convert to 8 bit color mode first

  • thankyou thankyou thankyou

  • Fantastic tutorial - Almost as instructional as my university lecturer.

  • you are not using windows? you are using mac. whats the deal with that?

  • I meant that I'm running an Intel processor on Mac (Was a new thing a year ago), not Windows. You say weird things when the microphone is running ;)

  • haha fair enough.

  • thanks alot man

    that was so helpful

  • Hey, thanks, this was a great tutorial.

  • Excellent - very clear instructions on how to perform this task. I would be interested what the latitude in CS3 is, how many f-stops difference CS3 will cope with?

  • You really only need 2 stop over and 2 under, works great for most images

  • Thank you I have been wanting to make an HDR for so long and now thanks to you I know how!

    And it works too!

  • what kind of hypercam are u using?????

  • thx, thx, thx ;D

  • Lack of contrast in your image my friend!! But at least you have over done it like some people on Flikr for example.

  • I did this over a year ago. I have better videos now :)

  • Photomatix kicks Photoshops ass on HDR creation!!

  • I like Photomatix for tone mapping, but prefer photoshop for merging them. I typically tone map with photomatix after I have merged them

  • how to do that? How to merge on PS CS3 and take it to Photomatix?

  • saving that 32bit froze my PC, I hate windows...

    thanks for this!

  • I think he means he's running an Intel Mac.

  • Yep your right, Im running windows on a mac

  • just an fyi.

    you're not running windows...

  • 1. "Merge to HDR" is not an option in my Photoshop CS3. All the other options are there, but that one is missing.

    2. Do you have to use 16-bit images?

  • i think you need photoshop CS3 extended version for this.. i'm surprised that the normal version doesnt have it.

  • idk. i just restarted the app and it was there.

  • thanks i've been wondering how some pictures have amazing exposure. I really want cs3 now...

  • When the slider is pushed far to the right @ around 2:38 the image looks like it was taken in Mordor or something, very cool.

  • epic lulz @ screen real estate. someone make a motivational poster.

  • the result doesnt really stand out as the HDR we see , i want the real processing steps

  • green tree gone :(

  • Its just a quickie while showing off the beta. I have more comprehensive stuff available now

  • Cool ima check it out.

after a month with no internet.

PS CS3 is awesome by the way.

  • Press F and you don't have to use the gray document ;)

  • If I used full screen mode I wouldn't be able to show the 3 images as cascading documents because they would be full screen too :)

  • That was very awesome! I'm sure there are other HDR tutorials, but your's is definitely very simple and easy to understand. Thank you for taking the time to help us!

  • that was great

  • This was really easy to understand. Thank you!

  • 4:33... what did you do? where'd that window come from?

  • I can't figure it out either. Please tell us!

  • Ok. I just started all over again from the beginning. This time the box came up by itself. I must have been doing something wrong the first time. Lol.

  • When you choose to convert the 32bit image to the 16bit one, the dialog box open for you to choose the HDR merge mode. ;)

  • thanks!

  • Welcome ^^

  • good work. One thing to note... you said something like "as you can see we're running windows on intel" which you clearly ain't ;)

  • I know, I cringe when I hear that :)

  • thank you very much, great tutorial!

  • Thanks for the info! I think many viewers may not realize that once the HDR image is merged you can save it as a .hdr file and use it in most 3D programs to create the lighting for your scene.

  • Thanks!

  • thanks!

now I know what the HDR tool in PS is,

AND what I can do with Bracketing on my camera!

I thought it was for display purposes, for the photagrapher to see what the best setting is :P

  • What the Mac you using?

I'm deciding about to buy Mac mini or Mac pro. Thank.

  • thank You, it will help me a lot....

  • to the person that said cs3 is the same as cs2. you are an idiot, cs3 is the biggest step photoshop has ever made; research it.

    btw, neat tutorial.

  • WOW! I think the idiot is another one.....maybe he doesn't know, maybe he is an idiot but what about you? Is that a smart answer?

Maybe if you enlighten us with your "research" we can get out of darkness....

    Cheers...

  • cool thanks for the tutorial

  • thank you.

  • i love photoshop but all i got is the cs2...

i am not gonna spend money on the cs3...its almost the same thing

  • one word: torrent

  • Awesome teaching tool for HDR, this helped me a ton, I was stuck on figuring out how to convert the HDR. Now to go out to some scenic spots and attempt some real HDR.

  • Thanks alot! Now I only need to know how to work my new dSLR (e-volt 500) :)

  • HDR-rendering oh cool to overexpose images like in computer games

  • Thanks for the demo, it was just what i was looking for.

  • thanks for the lesson --I'm interested in HDR photography

  • yes, except by default the tool bar iss single column

  • Is that the default new user interface?
