Thank you for posting this. This just confirms my belief that Retton was a great vaulter and tumbler. That's about all I can say about her. The Romanians-and the Chinese too-especially on compulsories-were light years ahead of her. It is an awful shame Agache became ill or suffered the effects of jetlag in optionals. All the same-her teammate Szabo should have won the AA on the strength of compulsories alone-she and Retton should never have been that close in the standings.

how long did the Romanian team were the ribbons on their hair? don't get me wrong, they're cute. but i think i don't see them wearing them anymore.

Perhaps in part because in those days they were allowed to compete much younger. I think the age rule allowed 14 to 15 years olds at the Olympics (I think Karen Kelsall was 13 when she competed on the Canadian 1976 Olympic gymnastics team).

She used to coach me in Boca Raton, FL in the late 80's early 90's. Those Romanians don't mess around!
