Hey guys, I dont know much about hardware, but I know about aviation and love FSX. Will these specs run FSX at full graphics. 8GB RAM, 3.6GHz, 2x GeForce GTX 460 graphic cards, and a i5 760 core. Also, I have the operating system on a 60gb SSD.
No point getting the high end graphics cards for FSX, unless you intend to run a multi-monitor setup.
GTX 9800 is the optimum card
Want to take simming to the next level? consider trackIR, then voice control software. There is a particular one you could try for free. It's called "Multi Crew Experience", and it rocks. You need a headset with microphone though. :-))
FSX is more cpu dependant. But I think that's an ok way to start i guess. But I would say is save some more money and get a gtx series card. With the same (or little less, is not of real concern unless your running big-big-big resolutions) memory. But the later series have ddr3 memory. That's the upside. So, all in all, I would say is save a little more and get a gtx series card (e.g. gtx260)
@flightsimulationguru eh had the 2nd largest plane in the world there runways 2 miles long but it's really a big regoinal airport well mixed civilian military airport

SLI is when you connect to grapich cards so they do twice the prefomance. but not evry game suport sli. so somtimes you prefomence wil suck ass. it called Crosfire in ATI cards
Right now ATI has the 4850 ($150) which is probably the best bang for buck card on the market and I believe the 4870 1gb beats the gtx 280 for alot less money.

b monaco ur right..but ur CPU would deffinately not give out 150 FPS...unless ur autogen is turned off and your BufferPools are to set to over 20 million.
Ok I agree that SLI is sick but my FSX looks like this maybe even smoother.AMDx2/64 6000+ 4gig ram 8800gtXXX.I get 50-60 on the ground and bursts over 150 in the air.All sliders to the right.FSX is a very demanding program you have to know how to configure the fsx.cfg file to get some real performance out of it.
Yes... FSX now supports multi-core processors. However, you need to install the latest service packs as the original release of FSX only utilized one core.
On the ground I get 20-30 fps... in the air I get 40-50+ fps. Fraps (the video capture software) eats up a lot of performance so it's not really possible to capture the true performance in the video.
PS also bare in mind that Fraps (I guess he used) is very CPU/Disk intensive, and that will reduce his frames anyway, so playing with his rig w/o recording, his frames will be pretty much higher than what we see now
I had a friend we met at lan party, and he had the same spec as me, running accelerator pack, only he had quad and I had dual, and FSX SP2 (accelerator) takes advantage, and his frames were significantly higher than mine. Made me wanna get a quad as soon most games will be multicore.
DDR3 isn't necessarily faster. It's speeds are actually slower, i believe. IT's expensive, and motherboards cost a lot to run ddr3. It's not worth it...
Ultra High... although obviously it's hard to appreciate that from a YouTube video. I would say that a single 8800GTX is fine for FSX and SLI doesn't really have any impact as it's totally CPU bound. If you need to budget between a better CPU and better GPU, go with the better CPU for FSX.
What computer do you need to run FSX with Full-Maximum graphics..
The price is not an issue - I might convince my aviation college to pay for a "more then average computer with super video card" so we can all ejoy and train using this simulator.
Well the system I have, the one the above video was made on, is essentially the best CPU-GPU combination on the market (it was a GTX and not Ultra but that really makes no difference here) so I don't know that there is a consumer computer that can run FSX with everything, including autogen and traffic, totally maxed out and still maintain 25 fps or higher in scenery intensive areas. However, just tuning back the autogen and traffic a bit with graphics settings left on high is achievable.
I agree with the single GPU comment. I have a single 8800 GTX and a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz proc and it runs as smooth as your video with Bloom turned on, ground traffic low (because it's just a resource hog and adds almost nothing to immersion factor), and most other settings to high or ultra high. And anyway, there are so many problems interfacing SLI with any Creative X-Fi and even Razer Barracuda sound cards that SLI isn't worth the headaches in my experience.
What's funny is I live about 10 min from MDT and the only heavys they use are that of UPS planes lol. Anyway this is abou what it looks like when taking off from 31 very cool.
Yeah, heavies are uncommon mostly regional jets and some 737s at MDT... although there are also some military flights that go in and out for the Air National Guard base on site. Air Force One (the 747 and 757) visits every now and then. The concept of flying a 747 from Andrews to MDT is quite funny really... depending on the runways used it only could be a 15-20 min flight!
I think one mistake you did was buying 2 graphics card, instead of 4GB of DDR3 @ at least 1333mhz frequency, also instead of a GTX, 1 single 8800 ultra would be better @ 655x2250 at least. What matters especially in this game is high clock speeds from RAM, Video card and processor, as it is for many other games, when you supply all that install one extra GPU. Sad there not any SLi-ready DDR3 Motherboard, but its coming soon, 790i. Nice rewiew though, great blog.
Thanks for the comments... those are certainly fair points. I definetly agree that the extra GTX with SLI isn't doing much performance wise (although I do use the same system for other games where it does make a difference).
I'm assuming video editing is a breeze on something like this (i need a new chip to edit some HDV format movies...so was curious to see if it is worth the price... i mean i have seen q6600's running stable at 3.4ghz on air cooling)
and I know cuz im watching Youtube its like that, but something realstic will be realistic no matter what, im not talkin bout pixels evidentally shown cuz thats obviously Youtube but if u really look u can see how shit the graphics are and these companies charge over $600 on equipment and this is all it can do?? I mean come onn. U should get wat u pay for mann all im saying
You can't really compare graphics on YouTube to the real thing at 1900 x 1200 resolution... that's essentially the difference between a VHS tape and 1080i HDTV. However, you're comments are still somewhat valid. The graphics in FSX aren't quite as impressive as some other games on the market (e.g. Cyrsis). For example, yes the grass is a solid surface vs. showing individual blades; however, FSX is an extremely CPU bound program (due to all the calculations for the simulation).
Also, your comments focused on the cost of hardware and graphics, but the graphics cards aren't the limiting factor here in a high end system... its the CPU. However, at the end of the day I don't think most FSX users are so concerned with the finer details of how the grass is rendered and would rather have resources dedicated to other aspects of the simulation.
That said, overall the graphics are still very impressive. Don't forget, Flight Simulator is one of (if not the) oldest consistently released game currently on the market... Version 1 dates back to 1982 and featured wire frame graphics! ;-)
Sry to say, really am, this aint outta jelousy cuz im building one soon but some onn, I mean look at the background when ur on the ground, graphics are shit, this is 2008 and this is all they can come up with still? some fake looking grass, like look at it carefully, its like blocks of pixels, they really need to improve fucking graphics, its like fucking Nintendo still shit
Generally about 20-30 fps near the ground, but it can get up towards 50 fps at higher altitudes where the ground scenery dosen't slow things down. Running the video capture software has at least a 25% hit on the fps.
When I use FSX normally I use 1920 x 1200 on a 24 inch widescreen. However, to capture the video for YouTube I changed to a 'square' aspect ratio to avoid squishing the video or using letterboxing.
Well I bet if he install HeathrowX and use some add-on aircraft (like PMDG) and use mesh products - frame rate will drop significantly ... also try to even add 100% traffic (using MyTraffic X or Ultimate Traffic 2007) and 40% road traffic .,. then tell what frame rate you may have .... this game is very very CPU intensive
Agreed that this is a CPU intensive program, although a few adjustments in the settings allow for an nice balance between performance and eye candy. This system is running the QX6850 quad-core which, at the time the system was built, was essentially the best gaming processor on the market. Even the newest 45nm chips only offer a slight performance increase so almost any system can be stressed to the limits with FSX if you throw enough CPU intensive processes at it.

presnillajones 3 years ago
On the ground I get 20-30 fps... in the air I get 40-50+ fps. Fraps (the video capture software) eats up a lot of performance so it's not really possible to capture the true performance in the video.

whats the name of thuis game
moderator13 3 years ago
It's not a game, it's a simulator called flight simulator x - fsx.
alexisaboyhello1234 3 years ago
PS also bare in mind that Fraps (I guess he used) is very CPU/Disk intensive, and that will reduce his frames anyway, so playing with his rig w/o recording, his frames will be pretty much higher than what we see now
Babyalien83 3 years ago
I can confirm... Yes I was using Fraps and yes there is a hit on performance.

I had a friend we met at lan party, and he had the same spec as me, running accelerator pack, only he had quad and I had dual, and FSX SP2 (accelerator) takes advantage, and his frames were significantly higher than mine. Made me wanna get a quad as soon most games will be multicore.
Babyalien83 3 years ago
DDR3 isn't necessarily faster. It's speeds are actually slower, i believe. IT's expensive, and motherboards cost a lot to run ddr3. It's not worth it...
mythtype 4 years ago
You have a Great System and FSX is Still Intensive. I wonder how it would be with 2 QX9650's
joelgalva8 4 years ago
wow, it runs so smooth. It almost looks like it's running two times faster, because it's so smooth. Can't wait till I get the QX9650!
Mark1871 4 years ago
weet thx i might get the same specs ar you and one question is it on high or ultra high?
aircanadapilotz 4 years ago
Ultra High... although obviously it's hard to appreciate that from a YouTube video. I would say that a single 8800GTX is fine for FSX and SLI doesn't really have any impact as it's totally CPU bound. If you need to budget between a better CPU and better GPU, go with the better CPU for FSX.
flightsimulationguru 4 years ago
What computer do you need to run FSX with Full-Maximum graphics..
The price is not an issue - I might convince my aviation college to pay for a "more then average computer with super video card" so we can all ejoy and train using this simulator.
be specific please
Anton1941 4 years ago
Well the system I have, the one the above video was made on, is essentially the best CPU-GPU combination on the market (it was a GTX and not Ultra but that really makes no difference here) so I don't know that there is a consumer computer that can run FSX with everything, including autogen and traffic, totally maxed out and still maintain 25 fps or higher in scenery intensive areas. However, just tuning back the autogen and traffic a bit with graphics settings left on high is achievable.
flightsimulationguru 4 years ago
Not the BEST CPU. Its a Great CPU dont get me wrong but not the BEST. QX9650 is better.
joelgalva8 4 years ago
I agree with the single GPU comment. I have a single 8800 GTX and a Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz proc and it runs as smooth as your video with Bloom turned on, ground traffic low (because it's just a resource hog and adds almost nothing to immersion factor), and most other settings to high or ultra high. And anyway, there are so many problems interfacing SLI with any Creative X-Fi and even Razer Barracuda sound cards that SLI isn't worth the headaches in my experience.

DDR3 is Faster

What's funny is I live about 10 min from MDT and the only heavys they use are that of UPS planes lol. Anyway this is abou what it looks like when taking off from 31 very cool.
PGMEagle 4 years ago
Yeah, heavies are uncommon mostly regional jets and some 737s at MDT... although there are also some military flights that go in and out for the Air National Guard base on site. Air Force One (the 747 and 757) visits every now and then. The concept of flying a 747 from Andrews to MDT is quite funny really... depending on the runways used it only could be a 15-20 min flight!

shit no lag... my integrated radeon x200 and p4 524 are not the best for fs
g36kismine 4 years ago
you're crazy to run fsx at an under powered PC ... even FS2004 will not run smooth at all for your machine, let alone FSX...
streetmicker 4 years ago
I think one mistake you did was buying 2 graphics card, instead of 4GB of DDR3 @ at least 1333mhz frequency, also instead of a GTX, 1 single 8800 ultra would be better @ 655x2250 at least. What matters especially in this game is high clock speeds from RAM, Video card and processor, as it is for many other games, when you supply all that install one extra GPU. Sad there not any SLi-ready DDR3 Motherboard, but its coming soon, 790i. Nice rewiew though, great blog.
yuryduarte 4 years ago
Thanks for the comments... those are certainly fair points. I definetly agree that the extra GTX with SLI isn't doing much performance wise (although I do use the same system for other games where it does make a difference).

is this with sp1 and sp2 (DirectX 10) installed?
are you running the qx6850 at stock clock speed of 3.0 ghz?
What is the AI levels?
have you tried any add-on prorgrams like x-graphics or active sky x? if so, to what extent do they hinder performance?
ISinisterI 4 years ago
- It's with sp1 and Acceleration Pack installed
- Yes, QX6850 is at stock speed
- AI is about halfway up (see link in description for more discussion)
- No add-ons at the moment so can't really comment, but will try some out down the line.
flightsimulationguru 4 years ago
have you tried overclocking the qx6850?
I'm assuming video editing is a breeze on something like this (i need a new chip to edit some HDV format movies...so was curious to see if it is worth the price... i mean i have seen q6600's running stable at 3.4ghz on air cooling)
ISinisterI 4 years ago
nice vid. Torontoguy you are a shame to our city. You have no idea of what your talking about.
therealmasterpilot 4 years ago
and I know cuz im watching Youtube its like that, but something realstic will be realistic no matter what, im not talkin bout pixels evidentally shown cuz thats obviously Youtube but if u really look u can see how shit the graphics are and these companies charge over $600 on equipment and this is all it can do?? I mean come onn. U should get wat u pay for mann all im saying
ToRoNtOGuYY 4 years ago
You can't really compare graphics on YouTube to the real thing at 1900 x 1200 resolution... that's essentially the difference between a VHS tape and 1080i HDTV. However, you're comments are still somewhat valid. The graphics in FSX aren't quite as impressive as some other games on the market (e.g. Cyrsis). For example, yes the grass is a solid surface vs. showing individual blades; however, FSX is an extremely CPU bound program (due to all the calculations for the simulation).
flightsimulationguru 4 years ago
Also, your comments focused on the cost of hardware and graphics, but the graphics cards aren't the limiting factor here in a high end system... its the CPU. However, at the end of the day I don't think most FSX users are so concerned with the finer details of how the grass is rendered and would rather have resources dedicated to other aspects of the simulation.
flightsimulationguru 4 years ago
That said, overall the graphics are still very impressive. Don't forget, Flight Simulator is one of (if not the) oldest consistently released game currently on the market... Version 1 dates back to 1982 and featured wire frame graphics! ;-)
flightsimulationguru 4 years ago
Sry to say, really am, this aint outta jelousy cuz im building one soon but some onn, I mean look at the background when ur on the ground, graphics are shit, this is 2008 and this is all they can come up with still? some fake looking grass, like look at it carefully, its like blocks of pixels, they really need to improve fucking graphics, its like fucking Nintendo still shit
ToRoNtOGuYY 4 years ago
Nice mate ! how many FPS ? I think you got more than 20fps
l1998 4 years ago
Generally about 20-30 fps near the ground, but it can get up towards 50 fps at higher altitudes where the ground scenery dosen't slow things down. Running the video capture software has at least a 25% hit on the fps.
flightsimulationguru 4 years ago
What resolution are you using?
Maverick806 4 years ago
When I use FSX normally I use 1920 x 1200 on a 24 inch widescreen. However, to capture the video for YouTube I changed to a 'square' aspect ratio to avoid squishing the video or using letterboxing.
flightsimulationguru 4 years ago
Well I bet if he install HeathrowX and use some add-on aircraft (like PMDG) and use mesh products - frame rate will drop significantly ... also try to even add 100% traffic (using MyTraffic X or Ultimate Traffic 2007) and 40% road traffic .,. then tell what frame rate you may have .... this game is very very CPU intensive
streetmicker 4 years ago
Agreed that this is a CPU intensive program, although a few adjustments in the settings allow for an nice balance between performance and eye candy. This system is running the QX6850 quad-core which, at the time the system was built, was essentially the best gaming processor on the market. Even the newest 45nm chips only offer a slight performance increase so almost any system can be stressed to the limits with FSX if you throw enough CPU intensive processes at it.
