Lol...No one has ever said that Donald was especially known throughout his career for his great literacy or diplomacy when it came to offending one's sensibilities, if he felt an injustice had or was being committed. He never hesitated to resort to an idiomatic expression in vernacular, if required, thus on this occasion, by all accounts! Donald's quick wit one-liners and sense of humour and this special ability to appeal to the people made him what he was. Great story, thanks for your post.
Donald Smith once was booked to sing for the Brisbane Waterside Workers who would not stop yelling ... so the orchestra could not start. Donald Smith calmly walked to the front of the stage and yelled back, "Shut-up you c..ts, this is Ava-fucking-Maria". The wharfies exploded into a unified deafening cheer and then the band struck-up.
Donald smith was one of the best ever ... but he was also the peoples' champion.
The high note in vincero is a B-natural and it is written as a quaver or 1/8th note. There is no quaver of pause. As any singer knows some high notes are more challenging than others and most tenors either cannot sing it as a quaver while others figure that if they are there, they may as well get some value from it.
I am saddened that so meny faux tenors mess this up for popular acclaim.
I have always admired Smith and enjoy his singing at all times.
No way - I heard Donald Smith singing this live for the Oz Opera several times. He could hold that long or longer, with power and trueness and a beautiful tone. It would raise the hairs on my neck the first to the last time I heard it.I blame him, along with Joanie and Donald Shanks for my continuing Opera addiction...
What an amazing tenor - although I suspect the Vincero probably hasn't been artificially extended - the brass merely went around for another stab instead of holding the note like they usually do.

Good but sounds like the final Vincero has been artifically extended. :(
