erikson sits alone in his knowledge of people and culture, and its tranlation into the depth of new physics and natural laws, turning the oldest fears and folklaw into a realistic dream. it also makes him extremely defeated and pessimistic in his books.. I hope he isnt like that in daily life! Seriously though mr erikson, I have spent a long time and have enjoyed it in the company of your re-fashioning of the dust of the dreams of the human race
the malazan books are SO UNIQUE it's rediculous! i love the series!
i also love LOTR and Sword of Truth, but too many fantasy authors have copied great ones like Tolkien and Terry Goodkind. I believe that the Malazan Book of the Fallen series is what fantasy needed: a NEW idea.
@1finalfantasyplayer I enjoyed goodkind in the beginning but after the 4th novel he became ridiculously repetitive and just plain boring. If you have read nothing by Tad Williams you should, he is a much better writer than goodkind. I personally don't even think goodkind and tolkein should be in the same sentence. He is definitely NOT a great. Neither is George R. R. Martin, as much undeserved praise as he's gotten.
I think out of the big fantasy epics written in the last two decades - WoT, Sword of truth, etc. - the Malazan series is the most different from Tolkien. The Tiste are pretty obviously the elf-equivalent, but other than the fact that they're tall, thin and have pointy ears, their philosophies and way of life are totally different from that of the LOTR elves.
Yep this is a huge and epic series i can already imagine the hundreds of side stories that fantasy writers are itching to write, there could be endless tales in those warrens, this is a beginning.
Wheel of time, really? It's big and all but I would say that Stephen r. Donaldson's Thomas Covenant series or Jack Vance's Dying Earth novels are better.
Lord of the Rings set the tone for most modern fantasy. BUT people seriously need to look beyond Lord of the Rings. Fantasy isn't only "Lord of the Rings". Fantasy is a genre that knows little or no bounds and yet the genre is chained to its roots... Malazan expands on what Lotr has done, same goes for WoT and many others.

It would have been different without LOTR considering Tolkein is the most influential fantasy writer ever.

how dare you mention Harry Potter in the same breath as LOTR and the Malazan books. Shame on you.
