offence-wise, the pass is more important than the shot, nash > kobe. defense-wise, the rebounder is more important than the guard, russell > west. Simple logic says birdmagic better offencewise since they are better passer, and better defencewise since they are better rebounder...unless logic is wrong

Sorry, but Nash is not greater than Kobe. Nash is a better passer than Kobe but he is not a better overall player. Your comparisons are not "simple logic" at all. Kobe and MJ don't need a great passer to do their job. They create on their own and that's one of the many things that makes them both so special

Also, to call Russell Mr. Defense cuz MJ only played on the perimeter doesn't make sense either. Russell played defense on the inside only so that's a moot point. MJ did get 200 steals and 100 blocks in a season more than once I do believe. I'm just saying that they were both one of the all time defensive greats AT THEIR POSITION

lol Magic could dunk cuz he's 6'9" and that's it. He did not play good defense as he well admits and if we're talking about admitting things, Magic admits in his autobiography that Michael was better. He wasn't always ready to admit that until he watched MJ in practice at the Olympics

Well, if you look at their stats when they went head to head in the '91 Finals, if I'm not mistaken Michael actually averaged more assists then Magic. Yes, Magic and Bird were better rebounders and probably better passers but Michael was the best all around player. I dare say that Bill Russell was the biggest winner cuz half of his team were Hall of Famers as well. Does anyone really think Houston would have beaten Chicago if Michael hadn't retired the first time?

mj was greatest in 91 because bird & magic weren't at their peak any more. Nobody has ever called mj the greatest defender, but russell is mr defense, because mj is at most only a perimeter defender, but russell is the greatest team defender, with bird & magic close. if nba basketball is played one-on-one, mj is greatest, but in teamball, team defense is much more important i.e. defensive rebounding...

I'm not denying Russell's greatness, but to compare the defensive rebounding prowess of a center and two 6'9" players vs. a 6'6" shooting guard is ludicrous. I'd say it was easier for Bird and Magic. They could just funnel their guys to a waiting Kareem, or a waiting Robert Parrish and Kevin McHale

It's impossible to determine the best of all time anyway. Bill Russell, the greatest champion (11), calls MJ, Bird, Magic, Wilt, and Dr. J  "the ties" because he says their so different but you'll never find anyone better.
