I know what you mean about that style of organ (keyboards) from the late 60's & early 70's. It's one of the reasons Deep Purple is my all time favorite band. Listen their stuff from that era and you'll hear plenty of it. Emerson Lake & Palmer is good for it too.
This song was such a HUGE part of the 60's and 70's...it DROVE newer approaches to music, that may never have happened1... and what a band!!! Thanks for the post!!!
You can just hear them listening to it back in the control room and going "dammit dude, you screwed up the levels and there's board grunge, we can't do that again man !!!"
I wonder if me and my friend have unique copies with this board grunge, or if it was on all the first initial LP copies? Thank you for checking out this LP record...Friends, Lloyd.
Excellent transfer from vinyl! It's almost like the tonearm counterweight was set way too light and the needle bounced around in the grooves and scratched the record
That scratching sound at beginning seems to be board grunge from studio mixer, as my friends copy has the exact same noises in the exact same places within the song as my copy. We got these at the same flee market, and both appear to be near mint in looks, but it is a mystery about those 2 LP copies?? Thank you for checking it out...Friends, Lloyd.
Why don't the classic hits stations play THIS version? I'd rather hear this 1, than the single edit, right, gang? God bless ya, for postin' it. Have a blessed week!
Back in the days before instant internet gratification there were things called radios. And on those radios were radio stations that still had some balls left. And occasionally those stations would play Green Eyed Lady, usually at 2 or 3 in the morning...it was well worth sitting up for.
I got a reminder of this song the other day. Way cool.
GEL stay popular throughout the 1970s because funk was popular until disco ruined it. I like prog rock, but never thought of Sugarloaf as one.
Advice for those converting vinyl to digital audio: If you want to clean crud out of your records, VERY gently, use a soft rubber (not plastic!) eraser and rub in the direction of the grooves. It will pick up debris such as sweat and dirt.
Those scratchy sounds are actually mixing board grunge I found out, my friend has the exact same LP with the noises in exact same spots as on my copy. Liberty must have remedied this on later copies as it was not on later albums(such as greatest hits, or other compilations where this song was on). Thank you for checking it out...Friends, Lloyd.
@lrh1966 You caught me at an interesting moment! I was just about to come back to this after another video, when I decided to check my mail. Hey, presto!
@lrh1966 It's just gone 19:21 here. Soon, I might get work in an animal sanctuary in a remote Suffolk village. I live in a more remote Suffolk village, & I've run out of the "magic space dust, maaaaan!", D'OH!!!!
I wish that there was a live performance of this tune from 1970; That would have been cool! By the way, in case you're wondering, I love this tune. It's so hypnotic!
I wish they made rock tunes this good these days. Oh well...
A live version would have been awesome!! I have looked around, and not found any yet, or at least, a live one from the same time when the studio version was made. Thank you for listening to this vintage Sugarloaf classic!!...Friends, Lloyd.
speaking of youth, I grew up when songs like this, always the long version, were the norm on FM radio...Long tunes like ELP's Trilogy or Chicago's "Im a Man" were what you listened to and never imagined it any other way. But eventually somebody figured a way to make more money by throwing a few more commercials on the air and cutting the music time in half..Thank god for progress!
When I was a young kid in the early 70's(age 7 in 1973), my parents gave me an AM transistor radio that I mounted on my bicycle, and I remember hearing the new songs at the time by "Steely Dan", "Pink Floyd", "Doobie Bros.", & many others, even though I did not know who the artists were in those young days, I got to appreciate AM when it was a rock music giant. FM was mostly classical music in my rural farm area at that time...Friends, Lloyd.
I have older cousins who told me about rock FM stations that were more focused to the big city audiences back in the late 60's, early 70's and how magical it was to be able to hear live concerts broadcast on the FM stations back than. Someone at my work has old reel to reel tapes of some of these concerts, and I want to borrow his "Doors" concert recorded from a FM station in New York in the late 60's!!!. FM now is generic, and boring compared to than!!...Friends, Lloyd.
Do you know what really sucks is that most of these so-called "classic rock stations " on FM radio won't even play this version of the song. They play the 45 r.pm. version which wimpy top 40 stations used to play back then.In 1970 guys like me had to go to FM radio for the full length versions of these classics. What the bloody hell has happened?
I know!!, FM rock radio has gone down hill quite a bit over the years!...They used to broadcast live concerts going on in the city their station was located...Now it is all "canned' satellite-automated music feeds for the most part...Thank you for checking out this vintage track...Friends, Lloyd.
@illinoisdemon So true! The long version of this song is so orgasmic and mind-blowing and it's always shortened! I don't even hear the short version very much and it's one of the best classic rock songs ever in my opinion!
You can hear the mixing board scratch grunge as they were using fader controls at the times you posted...The CD of this song must have got it filtered out someway, and there is know mixing board scratch grunge noticeable on them.
Great audio on this, for a YTb vid! Pretty good bass.
