Does anyone know the name of the film that features the man chasing a bird around town named Agamemnon only to set the bird and himself free after running into the philosopher??
@andeaver: If you can somehow see "The Cameraman", I highly recommend it. In fact, it was the first Buster Keaton movie I ever saw. Although it doesn't have the same amount of death-defying stunts, as say, "Our Hospitality", it is full of wonderful physical comedy. Also, "The Cameraman" is one of those rare comedies that can be describes as beautiful or touching, and you can see the subtlety and depth of Keaton's acting.
I've seen all of these except Noah's Ark(0:11), Love(0:18), and the Cameraman(0:20).
The funny thing about this montage are the moments when you recognize them in silient films. Last night I saw The Wind, and noticed the lantern swinging back and forth is the same shot in this montage!
One of the greatest things I've found on TV. The first full Silent film I saw on Silent Sunday was The King of Kings, I LOVED IT!! After that I couldn't get enough of these classics. It's because of silent sundays I started to collect dvds of silents.
man, they should make this earlier. I live in California so it comes on @ 9 :00 4 me, but that is still too late! I have school on mondays. I love these films though, I watch it every week. I just wish they'd change the time. Saturday nights would be fine.
@pianoharry You should stay up to watch it! Darn, I wish I was still in high school. I graduated in 2008----but if you really like it, you'll have a beautiful memory on Monday and throughout the week of the silent film you saw on TCM that queit Sunday night =]
0:15 (angry woman in mirror) is Joan Crawford in "Our Dancing Daughters"
Amazing Film!
the dazzling shot of all those balloons is also a scene from that movie, that TCM recently showed(God bless them!) during this year's 31 Days of Oscar celebration.
I absolutely love this intro; it is very classy and for some reason makes me very wistful! I really wish silents were played on more channels but I'm grateful for Silent Sunday nights :)
*SIGH* Garbo is stunning, but it just doesn't get better than Valentino. I LOVE him so much.
I hope TCM shows more silents, and hopefully the films and the actors will recieve the recognition and apreciation they deserve; if it not for them, there would be no Hollywood.
To my knowledge, they do. They didn't have "Silent Sundays" during the month of June because of their film programming (It was one director per 24-hours), but its back in July! :D Hope that helps!
wow i love tcm, the silent sundays movies are my favorite,i love this intro everytime they show it .thanks for all the movie titles,i knew almost all of em' but i was not sure on one(show people) ,thanks i love Joan Crawford in that mirror scene its so intense i love it! i wish tcm would show more silent movies, & i wish they bring back cartoon alley! what a shame they took it off it was one of my favorite things on tcm oh well
thanks for posting this and I'll you right off the top. I would be so lost if you didn't tell me the names of the movies in the clip. I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY with Garbos' the Kiss scene. It was from that short scene that Garbo captivated me and me a fan of hers. You have an amazing knowledge in silent cinema. I watch TCM but they need to show more silents.
TCM always does the best promos, and this one in particular. By the way, "Silent Sunday" is probably the best part of TCM's schedule (well that and TCM Imports). Thanks for putting this up.
No one knows exactly who composed the music. Many people, including myself, think it was Carl Davis, who is a well-known musician who has composed music for many silent films. -Just a guess though. If you e-mail the people at the TCM website, they might help.
Yea, sometimes when you click on the "more" link under the "about this video" tab, it doesn't work. But that's where I posted it.
And the info's actually not complete. I obtained the list from the TCM forums, but I'm missing the identity of the man in the clip from Show People. The woman is Marion Davies, but I can't identify the man.
Robin, I think the gentlemen may be King Vidor, the director of the film. He's uncredited as appearing as himself on IMDB. I may be wring but maybe it'll lead you to identifying him.
Robin, I think the gentlemen may be King Vidor, the director of the film. He's listed as uncredited as being a castmember of the movie he directed. I am not 100% whether or not that's him but hopefully that'll lead you in the right direction to identifying him.
The man is actually Dell Henderson and in the film Show People he plays Colonel Pepper, the father of Peggy Pepper, who is played by Marion Davies.
The scene is simply Peggy and her father at the window of the casting office, which is full of aspiring actors, acting and miming emotions for the clerk.
I own "Show People" on video cassette. The man with Marion Davies is Dell Henderson. He played her father, Colonel Pepper. The montage depicts the scene where he has his daughter Peggy Pepper (Marion Davies) show a talent agent her various facial expressions where she attempts to show various emotions using a handkerchief to cover her face between each expression. The only problem was, that Peggy was such a bad actress that all the facial expressions looked pretty much the same.
Show People was just featured this past Sunday on Silent Sunday Nights(the same evening as this year's Oscars)
I only wish I would have recorded it! I get so much gratification when I see a tiny scene in a movie that is featured in a montage like this that I have seen over and over again =]
Yeah, I was enraptured the first time I saw her face in the montage, and even more so when I saw Greed - I immediately thought of the montage.
So one day I decided to record it on a tape, which I did. Some months later I took it to my school's video lab and digitized it, then transfered it to my computer, and posted it here.
The video posted here is a 3 MB compressed video of the original 25 MB file, which actually is of much better quality. If you want, I can e-mail it or make it downloadable
Sorry to be a Grade-A pain ... ! But I'd love a high-quality version of this montage. If you could include a link that'd be great -- but even just a HQ version on YouTube would be awesome!

From 0:11-0:13, what silent film is that clip from? I've been trying to find out for the longest time.
flawedbeauty82 3 years ago
It's George O'brian, from the film Noah's Ark.
If you click on the more info tab, I've listed the films as they appear in order.

I'm pretty sure that is not Zazu Pitts in that first one marked greed, it looks more like Lillian Gish
marcolopolis 3 years ago
No, only Zasu Pitts had those big, forlorn eyes. There might be a slight resemblance to Lillian, but its definitely Ms. Pitts in Greed.
RobinSena23344 3 years ago
well it sure looks like she aged from that first clip to that last greed clip

it is a tango; it is the same tango song played at the end of the movie "true lies"

No its not. Por una cabeza plays at the end of of True Lies.

Who wrote this music? Was it written for the promo or is it some obscure tango?

Greta Garbo's glamorous close-up is of her applying her lipstick in front of a mirror. Mystery solved for me.
