Good song but this is the ONLY SONG I have ever found where the tablature and chords that people deciphered by listening to it were taken down from the internet due to infringement complaints by the artist and the record company.
@SanMikeva A lot of under appreciated artists due this in order to increase revenues on tab packs that you can buy on there website. I don't know if SS does this, but everyone on Candyrat Records does.
i just finished re-watching seasons 1-3. how come i expected it to end differently. if ryan just stopped the car. if kevin told ryan his intentions a bit better.
I've never known something which enhances your emotions so much (legally). If you're sad, a sad song will make you cry, happy and a happy song will make you wanna dance and love everything. It can inspire you to do something crazy and life changing or can make you reflect on your situation and the choices you've made. It's amazing how powerful music can be. Anyway, i love tits and that yer...
it would have been 100% the best video if there were the names of the places on the pictures...wow so incredible...damn we're destroying something beautiful here...
i don't see what's wrong with tv shows introducing people to lesser known, yet still remarkable new artists like sufjan stevens! personally, i got to him through the oc as well, and thank god because otherwise i might have never heard of this wonderful man and the wonderful music he makes!
Why can't people be happy that people were introduced into his music? Whether through a TV show, a friend, or investigation. Enjoy that people share your tastes.
Who cares that it was on the OC? Despite the show being somewhat sucky, their music was actually good. hence the use of this song. honestly who cares? if you like his music, it shouldn't matter what show it was on...
Because the people who found this artist and listened to the song which got them through things and through drama of their own for someone to cheapen the song by using it on a fucking rat shit tv show makes them feel cheapened themselves. I feel this way for a lot of artists: Edward Sharpe, Cat Power, Sufjan, Elliot and so on........ not just for use of songs on tv shows but when ignorant individuals are liek OMG I totally love thith thong!!!!zzzz!!!11!!
I did find this in The OC and it does not mean I can't appreciate this song as much as those who didn't. Who cares where you got it from? Let's just all enjoy the music.
"i have called you children" ...1 John 3:2 "Dear friends, we are God's children now"..."i have called you son"... Romans 8:14 "All those led by God's Spirit are God's sons."..."what is there to answer if I'm the only One?" ...John 17:3
"This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God". My interpretation of Sufjan's lyrics.
whooo caress if the oc did or didnt bring you here, why does everyone hav to rip on the show. all it did was spread his music even further which is a good thing, and besides he had to agree to let his song be played on the show, so he clearly thought it was good enough. they used it in a perfect scene which was amazing and if u dont like the show who caress, just appreciate the song !!
@nureincopilot from what i can gather, the song draws a parallel between the 'widows in paradise (a city in michigan)', 'the fatherless in ypsilanti (another city in michigan)', and those who have not yet found the christian god (often called the father).
someone also mentioned that sufjan actually had a made up story about the song, but as with most of his songs, there are many layers of interpretation
i know its bad but finding out that a quality song like this has appeared at some dreadfully morose and over-wrought scene in a god awful tv show makes me like the song a bit less.
@phoneboothLC God forbid one calms down and acts remotely reasonable without getting high. It's a nice change from all the other angsty crap called music.
good point, plus catholics seem busy disrespecting and hurting their entire culture all on their own. not to mention they're doing a better job of it than any of us outsiders ever could. so i don't see why we would even need to bother.
more to the point, people would stop hurting your entire culture if your entire culture learned to fuck off and mind its own damn business.
If someone posted hate or anger on this song I would be ripped because this is is wonderful song about love and and doing that would be defacing it and that would be disrespectful.
There are two kinds of Christian musicians: those who go on and on about their beliefs, and those who simply tell you about their experiences as believers. The former write tedious and obvious songs about God and Jesus (usually imitating the musical styles of the day); the latter write songs that can be appreciated by anyone, and Stevens is talented enough to do so with musical imagination on top of that.
@JasonAQuest Another great example of a musician with the same characteristics is Aaron Weiss of mewithoutYou. MewithoutYou's music is amazing, and Weiss's lyrics are simply astounding with their intelligence and cleverness; his lyrics truly make me believe that there must be merit to religion if a person so intelligent takes it so seriously.
I am by no means religious and I don't think religion is important in Sufjan's music, to the listener at least. He does not praise some lord but manages to grasp what comes to him a thing of beauty and translates it into music to share with the rest of us.
idk what everyones religious believes are. And really i don't care. But i think we can all agree there is something heavenly about music. Something we are called too, something that we are ment too. Christianity is purely a relationship with God. I am discouraged and disapointed with all the self righteous judgmental "christians" out there. we are all equal. we have all equally sinned, and we all deserve an equal punishment. God truly Loves each person, including YOU.
I loved this song from the first time I heard it....It accompanies every time of my everyday life when I want to alienate and bring memories to my mind(or make thoughts about the future)..It travels me far beyond the walls of my bedroom or even the surrounding buildings of Athens...
I don't believe that higher truths are currently within reach of mankind, nor is the supernatural a path that will lead us to them. Things on Earth truly are as plain as they appear--our existences are, well, purely existential. But it's only when musicians like Sufjan come along that I find myself inexplicably being moved to tears. Why? Because music like this manages to communicate the universal truths sought by all of us--without language, religion, mathematics, or any explanation otherwise.
@swinefluman123 Music is the God's language. That jerk of tear filled emotions is a glimpse of the heavenly eternity with Him. Emotions are how the soul communicates with the body. And its how we can communicate with others souls (making music that when people hear and feel, they experience your emotions). we are made to be with Christ, our very souls tug at any glimpse we can get at. WE were created, we are loved, and we are made to be with God.
Well, I think OC brought me to Sufjan Stevens a few years ago and it was the best thing that happened me. I mean, Sufjan Stevens' songs delighted me so much in the last years.
So where's the problem when someone came to Sufjan Stevens because of a crappy tv show?

Well, I think OC brought me to Sufjan Stevens a few years ago and it was the best thing that happened me. I mean, Sufjan Stevens' songs delighted me so much in the last years.
So where's the problem when someone came to Sufjan Stevens because of a crappy tv show?
