  • The Swedish Mauser has got to be one of my most favourite firearms

  • Where did you get those "steel-jacketed soft points,"? I haven't been able to find them on Norma's website or anywhere else.

  • @oddcarl1 They were old, probably about 50 years old, and so are no longer produced. All current Norma soft-point bullets have soft gilding metal jackets, not steel.

  • This is one of my favorite rifles

  • If you happen to reload your own ammo I have an M41b that i've been working down to 1 MOA accuracy since i've gotten it, and I want to try and hit targets at 800 yards. But I usually use Lapua 139grain Silver Scenars when I shoot.. But after extensive research I found out that Sierra makes a bullet specifically for high twist rate Swedish Mausers. It's the 142grain matchking. And it works perfectly with RL-22 powder and CCI BR2 primers.. Hope someone can use this info because swedes are awesome.

  • @BrassAxe Good tip on a good bullet. I use a lot of Matchking bullets in my .308 and they are very good shooters.

  • @314299 Yeah, I usually use the Lapua Scenars, or Lapua Naturalis bullets but the special made Sierra Matchkings in 142grain work better. I guess they made them slightly longer to get a good grip on the high twist rate (1 in 200mm) Swedish Mausers. What sort of .308 is it? I have a good friend with a CZ 750 in .308 that i'm currently working up load data for.

  • @BrassAxe It's a Remington 700 R5 stainless "milspec", with 24" barrel. I have a 4.5x30x50 Bushnell 6500 scope on it. It loves the 168 Matchking with IMR 4064, Winchester 748 or Varget.

  • Still very much inside the area of a Man sized target. So, highly accurate.

  • How much did yours cost? There's a reallly nice on at a local shop..well, not all that local haha otherwise I would have driven there to check it out in person (picture looks great)

  • @EverythingisFire I don't recall as I've had this one for over ten years.

  • @314299 Wow haha, awesome. I'm waiting for an e-mail back from the shop.

  • @EverythingisFire Best of luck with your potential purchase. How much are they asking?

  • @314299

They closed without checking their email tonight haha, I'l have to see tomorrow. Crossing my fingers it's cheap and layaway availability :)

  • @314299

$200-$300 something :) They have two and they were different prices. I'll check them out on Monday (closed Sundays) and put a deposit down if they're good. Yes, I'm that broke lol

  • @EverythingisFire That seems reasonable to me if they are in good condition.

  • how is the recoil for you?

  • @mark3smle I find the recoil to be mild.

  • An awesome awesome rifle. I have an 1898 manufacture date in excellent condition. I have a scout scope setup on it. The accuracy from this rifle with Hornady ammo is scary accurate. You have to setup this rifle with a scope to truly appreciate this awesome rifles capability.

  • @billcavazos I prefer to enjoy enjoy old rifles like this "as issued". If I want to shoot with optics I have modern rifles that are scoped. To each their own.

  • would love to find one of these somewhere

  • @HuskerFishing Lots of them were imported so you should be able to come across one somewhere - gun show, gun shop, on line auction or online dealer.

  • @314299 just picked up a mosin not long ago. Its at a gunsmith because I don't have time to clean it up right now. Those 91 30's are everywhere around here.

  • nice! My M96 is dated 1902. Great condition. The safety wont go up or all the way right with the original straight bolt so I replaced it with a new curved bolt (i prefer the curved anyway.) Haven't shot it yet but I hope to. How is the 'recoil' btw? the small caliber seems like it wouldn't be much compared to a K98.

  • @CapitanDonKarnage Just one word of caution regarding switching bolts - you really should have the headspace checked when you swap out a bolt . Perhaps you know that already but I thought I would mention it.

As for recoil the 6.5x55 is a modestly recoiling round, very pleasant to shoot.

  • @314299 ah! good call. Funny you mention that, I literally just has some refresher training the other day on how to check headspace and timing on shipboard weapons with those little machined keys. I wouldn't know how to check headspace on an M96 though, I could always take it to a smith or hope someone at the range would know how. I plan on going today or tomorrow so i can try out this Erma 22. training mauser i found the other day.

  • @CapitanDonKarnage MidwayUSA has a YouTube channel with a nice clear explanation of how to check headspace, and they use a Mauser as an example, suggest you check that out.

  • shame you didnt have markers in the butts , would be easier , should definatly do one of ur rifle reviews on this one . great vid .

  • @idgewe Yeah, that's one on my very long list.

  • I get the feeling that your in Canada ;) , and am curious of where this range is?

  • @CassyCalv I am indeed in Canada. The range is one on the east coast.

  • Uncle just built me one of these and i love it, put a 4x on it, he put a new stock, and it shots great at 100yrds

  • Great shooting and great rifle. Well done!

  • @gragrn Thanks.

  • Man I am envious!

The Swedish Mauser has got to be the best variant for hunting and combat!

  • @dukenukemthreed The Swedish Mauser didn't see much combat - I think the only signifigant combat use was with Swedish volunteers fighting with the Finns against the Soviet Union.

  • I have a you tube friend from sweeden who told me that the sweedish goverment distroyed all the last remaing M96 which is very sad .

  • @Captb55806 It wouldn't surprise me. Many western governments have signed international agreements to destroy their surplus firearms. It's not only sad but stupid as well.

  • @314299 What is also stupid is that South Kora has some M1 Grands and some M1 carbens in storage and they wanted to sell them to America but the Obama adminatration would not allowe it because they classified it as assult weapons ? How stupid is that? Verty stupid if you ask me. Thats why it is very important that all gun owners in America vote November 2 and vote out those communist bastards.

  • @Captb55806 Yep!

  • @Captb55806

My grandfather served in Korea, and instead of respecting that and selling his rifle to a collector they want to MELT EM DOWN, Obama is a fascist pig who doesn't care about the sacrifices others made or the freedom others died for.

  • @Captb55806 Most were sold as surplus about 5-10 years ago. That is how I got mine. Now the surplus market has cycles. For while it was SKS's. Now it's Nagants at every gun show.

  • Been hunting the past 15 years with a modified M96 from Husqvarna the long barreled version, (several drills reportedly broke in attempt to fit a scope to it). Im using handloaded ammo with sierra bullets. It takes out roe deers at 3-400 yards with a yawn, that's as far as the field stretches where i hunt at. Never shot a better rifle yet, like comparing Mozart with Britney spears.

  • @Tyrfingr I've heard from a couple gunsmiths about how hard these receivers are, one said he had to spot anneal them in order to drill and tap them.

  • cool shooting range. i got one from 1913 btw. i found it in my basement and havent shot it yet.

  • @boogieman221thx I've never been lucky enough to find a gun in my basement!

  • I highly recommend the Swede Mauser's !

Mine was made in 1924, excellent (original) barrel with Naval sights!

the 6.5x55 is a magic calibre!!

  • @DenwarTheoriginal It certainly is a versatile caliber.

  • i've been hunting for one of these gems for two reasons: accuracy and comfortable recoil.

  • @kryptoniterxn117 The 6.5x55 round has a well deserved reputation for both. A friend of mine hunted moose with his for years with great success.

  • @314299 what kind of grouping can your m96 do on a good windless day? Im working on a deer rifle, my finnish m39 can do 2in grp at 100 yds, scoped m91/30 1.5in, german k98 3in...I've only bedded and floated the 91/30. Im waiting for an m96 carl gustav or orbendorf to have a selection to choose from.

  • @kryptoniterxn117 With 160 grain bullets it can turn in 1" five shot groups. 139/140 grain bullets shoot a little bigger groups.

  • @314299 that's pretty decent, is this at 100yds? and do you reload to see its capability?

  • @kryptoniterxn117 Yes, that is at 100 yards, and with reloaded ammunition. Norma factory ammo shoots just as well in my experience, but it is rather expensive!

  • @314299 im 14 and i used a mini-14 .223 to kill my first moose

  • @scoutsniper57 I hope it was really close!

  • @314299 80yd head shot

  • Are these Swedish made Mausers better than the German made Mausers?

I've been considering buying an M96 Swede Mauser.

  • @majorporpoise That really depends on when a particular German mauser was made - I would say that pre war German Mausers and the Swedish rifles are pretty much on par quality wise, but wartime German rifles are all over the place in terms of quality.

  • the m96 swedish mauser is the best made of any of the military mauser rifles. Beautiful rifles

  • @warriorofsteel01 They certainly are well put together rifles, no doubt of that.

  • What kind of velocity could I expect from a 20" barrel & 140 grain bullet in this caliber?

  • I would guess somewhere around 2400 fps, depending on the powder.

  • Damn these things are like $450, aud, in australia

  • i bought 96 Swedish Mauser at k mart usa in 1994 for 75.00 us dollars worth300.00 now. THIS RIFLE IS PURE ART IN EVERY WAY

  • I bet you now wish you had bought a dozen at that price!

  • You know, I am not one for all the magnum rounds out there and that being said, I am not really happy with the 308 winchester/7.62x51. A few years back, I lucked into a Carl Gust. sporterized Mauser. The wood is to die for. I topped it with a Bushnull 10x 3200 and it is only grouping 1/2-3/4 at 200 yards. 2 years ago I managed to get a CG 63 target rifle, with a 28 inch medium/heavy contour barrel. This one is only doing 1/2 all day long at 200 yards. best part is, they aren't new guns.

  • And with the accuracy you also get moderate recoil and noise. Win, win & win.

  • Actually, My 6.5 sporter has the recoil of a 30-30 in a Winherster 94 carbine, so it makes it easy to fire 5 rounds in 12 seconds and dump them in to an inch or a little bigger at 200 yards. The CG 63 is a different story all together. Its weight is about 13 pounds unloaded. This means my GC 63 has less recoil than a 223 remington in a light weight sporter. Again, 12 seconds and 1 inch at 200 yards. My handloads are driving the 140 low drag bullets at about 2400fps, and they are accurate as hell

  • You can buy a dozen of them in sweden for 100-150 USD a peace.

They are really common, and most people buy them and rebuild them (restock, heavy barrels and scoop mount ) so better that they go abroad and stay alive.

  • Really not surprising as people seldom appreciate things that are cheap and common. It was very similar over here for many years with Lee Enfields, people bought them cheap and chopped them up into sporters, only when the value goes up does this type of thing stop.

  • Yes, thats why it would be nice if people abroad bought these rifles. When theres just a few 10 000 left they will be appreciateed at home.

  • Exactly.

  • @profanum88 That sounds like the same shit that people do to 1903 Springfields and 1917 Enfields. Cant seem to find many that haven't been "improved", or as I refer to it as being dicked with.

  • 300 yards is really nothing for this gun or round, try 600 yards, i bet you will do good.

  • Yeah, I expect it would do pretty decent at 600 as well, the big issue is the sights and the targets. The targets we have are designed for rifles with optics and they start getting pretty hard to see with those open sights! I have done a bit of shooting with iron aperture sights at 600 yards and it works pretty slick as long as there is decent light. When the light gets poor the optically sighted rifles really are an advantage.

  • Actually, Mauser Obendorf did make an early batch of M96 rifles. Some were later converted to the M38 which had a shortened barrel.

  • Yep. Lots of good info on Swedish Mausers over at the "House of Karlina".

  • the Swedish m/96 Mauser, was not made or designed by Mauser Oberndorf. Thankfully, i live in Sweden, and can buy one for $120. they where determent as the most accurate infantry rifle ever fielded, and they are loved by rifle enthusiasts like myself.

  • $350 - $500 here in the US, and going up.

  • Say what? They sell for 350 to 450€'s in Belgium. Just bought one ;p

  • I almost bought one with the original ajax scope issued by the swedes. Got an AR15 instead and kind of regret it!

  • An M41 sniper rifle! Too bad you didn't buy that one - what were they asking for it?

  • I think 1,200 or 1,300 dollars. I'm not sure of the authenticity though.

  • That would be a pretty decent price if it was real. Unfortunately one has to be suspicious of any vintage rifle offered as "sniper".

  • Gun store owner was asking $1890 for a M96 Swede sniper original Military with bent bolt, matching scope (German 4x Carl Zeiss scope) & mount numbers, matching metal scope carrier, & 1914 Carl Gustav matching rifle.

  • The M96 was German designed (like all the other Mausers) and was produced primarily in Sweden with a few made in Germany as you said.

  • I have an M96, too. They are amazingly good shooters and are of very high quality.

  • Those Swedes certainly knew how to build a nice rifle.

  • So do the Finnish.

  • The big difference is that the Finns never made the entire rifle, they always started with an action made by someone else and improved upon it. Of course I'm just referring the Mosin-Nagant series of rifles.

  • I was talking about SAKO, lol.

  • That's a little more specific....

  • This is gonna be my next rifle.

    This or a K31.

  • I have to get me one of those K-31's!

  • Lol not before I get mine!

  • Very nice, and nice shooting. Thanks.

    David

  • Great video,

Can you do at least a short a review on this rifle?

    Yevgen

  • One is in the works!

  • I've had the opportunity to fire this rifle. Extremely accurate, very good rifle.

  • Yes, they have a well deserved reputation for quality and accuracy.

  • nice video and good shootin.

  • Thanks.

  • Nice!
