  • Completely sensuous and utterly beguiling

  • Best kiss ever.

  • i love how he's like yup

  • Ps, in comparison the remake was utter trash. I suffered it from beginning to end. Never again.

  • Here is one of the most perfect films ever made. Every nuance, gesture, expression and line from brilliant actors. It could have been 5 hours and I wouldn't tire of it. I saw it when it first appeared and have seen it possibly 15-20 times and never tire of it at all. It is a jewel in the crown of cinema.

  • I could watch this forever. The "view" no doubt represents one's view of the world/life/passion; the Emersons trade views with the narrow Charlotte and the repressed Lucy, and eventually all hell breaks loose! But if this is hell, bring it on.

  • hmmmm i dont see any violets..... lol

  • Possibly my favourite film kiss of all time. The music, the scenery and the actors. Perfect.

  • i find myself saying these lines to myself now and then. "and a spoon"

"feign to deny it, Charlotte" and then, from the next scenes, "the driver?" "but you DID appear", "what's that book?" "Mr. Beebe! Matches!"

Such a funny, funny movie, and so dear.

  • I don't think there has ever been a more perfect marriage of music to film scene.

  • If someone who know this background's aria then pls let me know...!

  • @naughtygam

The aria is called 'Chi il bel sogno di Doretta' and is from one of Puccini's less known operas 'La Rondine'.

Refer to old comments hereunder !

  • @MrAwigh like poetry :)

  • What a charming place! I just love it

  • This is a scene that brings tears to your eyes of both joy and beauty and everyone who has visited the hills outside Firenze. When I saw this a year after my sort of "Grand tour" through Europe at the movie I still after all those years I want to leave, live and love. A magic moment, even for a normal guy.

  • Aiiiiieeeeeeee! uh uh uh uh uh

  • I do like this scene so much... thank you.

  • How wonderful. Truly this is an amazing film, and the scene is an absolute masterpiece. Thank you for posting! Leeysa xxxx

  • Delightful!!! Thank you so much.

  • I'm a 20 year old girl who normallhy is very level headed. I agree that this scence can make me feel like a little girl weak in the knees!

  • @classiceramuse i do watch this from time to time, lovely in every way

life can be so magical. i like to picture it happening to me :-)

  • @funmartin1

iIdid not understand how to post and tried to comment several times b/c I thought it was not posting:P I do wish something would happen like this to me. I don't even like to watch a lot of romances b/c they make me sad for some reason or the other. I've made myself believe these sorts of things don't happen. However, this scene makes me feel maybe all is not lost. I like your comment that life can be lovely in everyway. i think that is true in in the most unexpected of places:)

  • So poignant...

  • i love it when he falls out of the tree

  • beautiful scene, but having had this happen to me, it's not as glamorous. more of shock and then heartbreak when everything separates you. I doubt I will see him again. Still it's romantic, if you like that kind of thing.

  • i will wait till i find a girl like this

  • this sooo does remind of Eminem's video / song "beautiful" performance... i want Marshall's eternal yes... oh do i ever... hey...i could have been "lucy" ...

  • GLORIOUS!

  • I worked as a costume maker in London and renovated Lucy's costume for this beautiful scene; happy memories.

  • I think this clip was copy from Chinese video , it should be Hongkong stuff.

  • sigh-i just adore that scene! if i were there i would just melt!

  • the music by puccini (and of course the movie) is amazing! i can't really believe that this actress played beatrix lestrange, too...

  • I wish men would behave this way... so passionately, and honest... Seems only in movies, such a tease...

  • Wonderful!

'And did she never return to Weybridge?' must be one of the funniest lines in cinema...

  • my favorite movie of all time

  • Desire...find the one and kiss her.

  • im a 6`2 tall, 15 stone rugby playing man, at 42 years old this scean moves me to almost tears, im still looking for this to happen to me......... but i fear its too late for me. a truely magical scean

  • Oh ! Believe me, I'm 78 years old, and waitinfg for the beloved encounter to happen ! Not a rugbyman, not a playboy, an old senile boy but with the Hope !

  • What a lovely thought. My friend who's 53 told me he never expects to experience the magic again that erupts when you see someone who makes your blood boil when you see her and she sees you. I think that that's sad. I wish he had your optimism and sense of romance

  • @jolicrasseux You must be 80 now. Thank you for uploading this beautiful scene, and for hoping. You've made me feel a little of that Hope too. Take care of yourself.

  • Never give up hope! This has been my favourite film since I've been 15 and believe me I've kissed many princes since! Then 7 months ago, like something from a fairy tale it happened and my prince came striding across a lawn and just kissed me ... it was the most amazing moment of my life and we're both having to give up alot to ensure that having found each other, we spend forever together ... it really does happen ... but like thet say ... where and when you least expect it!! never give up! :)

  • @funmartin1 do not loose hope ever!!!!

  • @funmartin1 I can see how this moves people, I must say the british sure know how to make romance. There list of movies keeps going, still the romance always makes me wish I was one of the women.

  • @funmartin1

I'm a 20 year old girl and i typically like to keep a level head about these sorts of things, but I agree this scence can make me weak in the knees!

  • @funmartin1

Oh I agree! I'm a 20 year old girl who normally is very level headed, but this scence can make me feel like a little girl who's weak in the knees. I secretly always wished for something like this film in my life!

  • @funmartin1 even from beyond the GRAVE if one is to believe the Christians (lol) there is love love love & I hope never to be too old for it :) xo

  • @funmartin1

All hopeless romantics will cry watching this scene. It's normal. It doesn't matter how big or tough anyone is. In fact, the tougher they are, the more they will tear up. Inside every tough guy there's someone who is begging for love. I hope you get to experience your own scene soon.

  • Before the Twilight kiss (first kiss between Bella and Edward - which the hesitation makes their kiss) I have to say this was my first best kiss scene ever. 4:52 - 4:53. I LOVE how he just takes control and goes for it, no hesitation.

  • It looks like the carriage driver saw the whole thing as well, the kiss that is, and doubtless, had we been allowed to see his reaction, would have a grin on his face.

  • BEAUTY!!!!!!!

  • Without a doubt my favourite film of all time. Sublime!

  • I completely agree with you, fidelmacunniffe. I've always said it is the most charming film ever made. And on a very low budget as well. This is one of it's best scenes.

  • I conquer with the comments of amalishe. This is my favorite scene in what is quite possibly the most charming film ever made. The music is superb, and the way George walks toward Lucy through the barley and just KISSES her. Too Too Romantic.

Maggie Smith is superlative as always, and Judi Dench as well.

And the Italian carriage driver is SOOOOOO handsome, with his head thrown back smoking. Lovely, Lovely, Lovely.

  • Fantastic..TX

  • Who sings this song???

  • Chi il bel sogno di Doretta from the Opera "La Rondine" by Puccini. Singer Kiri Te Kawana.

  • This scene is such PERFECT! The music, the words of the song, the editing, the cinematography, and THE KISS! SUBLIME!

  • Just perfect!

  • at 2:45 "La Rondine",by Puccini

  • i love this kiss!

  • Soooooo HOT. Love the kiss. The song, the country, the moment....

  • OMG!!!!! Good Julian Sands BE any handsomer!!!! This is such a romantic clip of this wonderful film! Classic!! Thank you very much for posting it. x

  • This is one of the few films that does justice to the book. I love both.

  • è troppo bello questo film!!! ma ancor di più il libro!

  • THANKYOUUUU!!!!!

  • it's Chi il bel sogno di Doretta from Puccini's La Rondine sung by Kiri Te Kanawa

  • sorry, does anyone know what opera aria this is?? ITS AMAAAZING, ive been trying to find it for so long! i know its puccini but What exactly!???

    gracias

  • Madame Butterfly sung by Kiri Ti Kanawa

  • reminds me of a gap year when i had just watched this film. whent to south of france and had a very similar scene with another chap that i met from swindon of all places. all those years later this scene and well a day hasnt past when i havnt thought what could of been. bless you for putting this on. a hopless romantic/

  • Forget it and go ahead !!!

  • Oh, *swoon*; thank you for posting one of my favourite cinematic scenes ever. The luscious Florentine landscape, Kiri singing the soaring Puccini aria, the liquid Tuscan light, the gauzy white dress, and GEORGE... His heartfelt creed, his hilariously bumbling fall, his ravishingly sweeping kiss... For what more can a girl ask? ;-)

  • One of my favorite scenes in one of my all-time favorite films! Truly Merchant-Ivory's best achievement! Every frame of film is perfection!

  • Thank you thank you thank you for posting this!

  • And why so many thanks...! There is no railroad around !

Nevertheless, thanks to you Monkeypayson !

  • "I have not had rheumatism for years, and if I feel a twinge I shall stand up." Ha-ha!!!!

  • Ohhhhh oui, c'est un moment d'éternité. Merci.

  • omg thanks for uploading this!!

    so beautiful! loved it :)

    i love helena

  • This scene is so subtlely funny as well as inspirational, and just a little tongue-in-cheek stern. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, what a fine pair.

  • Thank you so much for this.. the music, the view, the moment... its all so beautiful, definitely one of my favourite films and one of the cinema's best kiss scenes no doubt@

  • "He's declaring the eternal yes!"

"And a spoon, if there is one."

  • Dame Kiri Te Kanawa singing Puccini's 'Chi il bel sogno di Doretta' = DIVINE:)

  • ¡Qué película más bonita! ¡Me gustaría vivir un romance similar!

  • That is my beautiful Toscana (Tuscany) and Florence....

  • thanks for this :P

    x

  • Come to think of it, it's not very romantic to be forcibly kissed like that, no offence. But regarding this movie only-it certainly makes me laugh! Jijijijijiji jijijijijiij LOL

  • you have any sensibility or i suppose for U love is not in the movies doesn't ?

  • the French translation is a little off, but thank you so much for posting--this is exactly what I was looking for!!

  • Does anyone know the music I love that song

  • The aria is called 'Chi il bel sogno di Doretta' and is from one of Puccini's less known operas 'La Rondine'. Astonishing beauty!!!!

  • oh thank you so much

  • The costumes are beyond

  • What a fantastic scene in every way. From Mr Beebe to Mr Emerson and the snobbish clergyman... but Maggie Smith and Judy Dench conversing in the grass is superb... I have a theory, that there is something about the Italian landscape, which inclines even the most stolid nature to romance....

Volontiers !

  • The thing with the driver assuming Lucy was looking for George: what she asks him, in her limited (!) Italian, is "where are the good men?" And based on their conduct, he assumes that she's talking about the two Emersons, and not the two clergymen...! Plus there's his Italian intuition. ;) For all those who haven't yet read the book... it's a must, also in translation.

  • Cakes to the people who put this movie together and to you for this post. Love Dame Kanawa's voice over the "hot hot kiss" scene.

  • This scene is so beautiful!!!I wanna see this movie really bad.I'm going to order it on netflix. The Italian guy is really cute. And George is hott!

  • I was going to gather this scene and post it. You did the edit exactly as I would have. Thanks for posting. My favorite scene from the film.

  • Ivory is a master in "clichés" and the approach of the young lady among the flowers to the lover's arms is wonderful ! You have many opportunities to edit beautiful moments, (by ex: covering the old lady's white hair with forget me not )

Your comment brought sun and warmth to me ! A big thank you.

  • I love that the driver mistakenly assumed that Lucy was looking for George when she asked for Mr. Beebe. Also, the use of the music is phenomenal.

  • You taught me that fact, it's not in the french translation. But the word "mistakenly" is yours ! Remember the driver's girlfriend ejected from the carriage by the clergymen ! And the driver is a beautiful Italien !

Please, load a piece of your emotion in the game !

Yes, phenomenal is the music, it's perfectly sticking to the athmosphere.

  • ecrirez vous 'bravia paint ad' a la boite cherchez en youtube. la bravia paint ad = la oui eternel, bourgeois terne vivant soudainement. je travaille avec neon. j'ai un studio. et mon francaise c'est tres tragique. pardon.

  • Many thanks for your so nice explanation ! I would have never made a link between Ivory and Sony fireworks without your "oui eternel" ! And you say it's mine ! I'm a nostalgic, you are not ! Your french version deserves 18/20. and my thanks.
