  • dear phil, are larrivee necks a bit broader than "usual" necks? i always wondered because i did not have the chance to test one yet and it drives me crazy to play finger style on standard size necks.

  • @mcFifo2007 Not that I know of. The neck on that one was fairly standard. Maybe it is an urban myth?!

  • thanks, is that the nanowebs?

  • That sounds great, Is that the acoustic sound or is it played through the pickup? I have an om-03 (not rosewood) and it doesn't sound that good, I'm on a permanent search for the right strings, you wouldn't happen to remember what strings you were using? long shot I know!

  • @miznomer1 Hi there, I use Elixir 53-12 on all my guitars. The guitar in the video was given to me for demonstration, and so it is played without any pick-up. All the best. Phil.

  • Beautiful guitar. Sounds better than my LV09 for which I paid more. Cost has gone up, no? How much would this run now? Listing for $1857 on their site.

  • @mattmaes Hi there,

I think you can pick these up in the UK for about 900GBP. Got rid of this about a year ago, haven't really kept up! Cheers

  • Hi Phil,

    What is your music background?

Who did you listend to when you were learning guitar?

    nice style!

    cheer

  • I bought one in 09 and havnt looked back. Have a Martin 000 and the boom sound of the larivee makes the big difference. Great guitar . Runs $2500 in NZ. Cheers for the test tunes bro.

  • Larrivee - best guitars ever!"

  • Thank you for your performance.

  • Im thinking of buying this guitar. Is this model made in canada or USA CALI? Thanks and great playing there sir.

  • @eatthemoon13 Hi, Canada I think. Not too sure. I got it from a British dealer.

  • @TheOuttakeman Does it strum well enough for singer songwriter stuff cohen, van morrison etc?

  • @eatthemoon13 Oh yeah, great for that, but I would say better for fingerstyle. Get a Martin Dreadnought for strumming! Cheers

  • Greetings from Canada!

    Your fingerstyle technique is amazing!!!!!!

You brightened my day with that lovely theme

All the power to you my friend

  • @LocoPCtheoneandonly Thank you ever so much, and all the very best to you!

    Cheers

    Phil

  • Nice playing! How does the larrivee compare to your sc om?

  • @srv1821 It doesn't ! The Santa Cruz is a vastly superior instrument in every department. Cheers Phil

  • Do you recommend these over breedloves? I am looking for a do-it-all guitar. I was looking at the Larrivee LV-09 or maybe 10 if I can scrape together enough for the extra bling! But it's mainly the tone I'm after. My experience with breedloves is that they're great guitars....For fingerpicking! and light strumming. But I occasionally need that extra kick, since I play a wide variety, and don't stick with one style. Thanks for your input!

  • @Cheonsang7 Hi there,

This Larrivee is a pretty good guitar, but if you want a do-it-all guitar (for life) then save a bit and get one built for you OR go for an American boutique guitar such as Collings, Goodall or Santa Cruz. Breedlove's are OK, but it depends which ones you are referring to!

  • You're an excellent player! how many years you got under yer' belt?

  • @Cheonsang7 Far too many to remember - 30+ !!

  • nice guitar

  • Really superb player (hat - NO!) . What you did with Summertime says it all, fabulous. Do you get to The Rock in South Yorkshire?

  • @frogslips Cheers mate. Is that the club run by Rob Shaw? I did once a long time ago. I'm not considered a big enough name to do it now!

  • Where can I get your album? Very cool style.

I love Santa Cruz guitars too - even went there in California.

Have you ever tried a Maton?

    Rock on, Dave MacC

  • @sandlerfan100 Hi Dave, thanks for your comments. I did have a Maton once, but eventually moved it on. Nice guitar though.

You can get my album by sending a cheque to me for £12GBP. For this I will send you two albums and a DVD. There are some songs on there as well as tunes and it is pretty much folk stuff. E-mail me so I can give you more details (message me on here!) and I'll send you some stuff.

    Thanks for your interest.

    Cheers

    Phil

  • I am interested in buying this guitar and your demo is the best sounding one on You Tube....I am thoroughly convinced of the great tonal qualities of this guitar thanks to you....I believe this is about 2 grand american dollars if I'm not mistaken.

  • @naturaltoby between 1000$ and 1500$ for an OM-03RE

Take a look at Notables Guitars if you are in the States. (I don't work for them!)

  • Wonderful! Thank you.

  • Beautiful!!!

  • Such perfect intonation and tune...what a beauty...

  • What kind of thumb pick do you use?

  • Hi there.

Just a standard plastic Jim Dunlop job. Hope that helps!

  • Excellent guitar, I have one. I wanted a Martin OM16 or 21 and I change my mind at the shop when I tried the Larivee...

  • best guitar for this price! great sound great playing! I love mine too

  • i baught one of these for my brothers 21st birthday and he freaked i worked the whole summer in a guitar store getting payed nothing but got a good price on it and it was well worth it !

  • beautiful playing. beautiful guitar as well.

  • harmonically superior grade, both phil and om-o3 !!! merci beaucoup

  • Nice sound. Too expensive for me though :(

  • Nice Danny Boy interpretation. I am plagiarizing (some of) it. Thanks for the hints.

  • Well, that is a nice-sounding guitar and I think you sound really good.

  • Thank you, Much appreciated.

  • NIce playing; great guitar. Actually, the OM-03Re is exactly the same size as OM-03R, just with the Baggs pickup and barn door in the side.

This OM is the same size as all Larrivee OMs. The 03 series is manufactured in Canada; higher gloss models are made in California. They do make lovely instruments.

  • Cheers John. Thanks for the comment. Yes, nice guitars, but I had to give this one back! Mind you, I don't think it would have eclipsed my Santa Cruz OM/PW.

  • Unless you can post something and play it better than Phil, and maybe you want to criticize just because you can, get off his a__!! By the way, this was just a demo of a Larrivee, which I own, and is one of the best guitars on the market!!

  • You have no idea of timing. You make a good guitar sound bad, shame

  • What do you mean by saying that? I'm doing a demonstration which is very 'loose' anyway so it's not all in 'strict time'. As for making a good instrument bad, if you strummed a G on this fucker it wouldn't sound bad!

If you're one of these 'tube stalkers' looking to leave negative comments on peoples efforts then do one of two things: back it up by playing something decent and positive yourself, or at least leave some constructive comment to let me/they know how I/we can get better.

  • Wowee, I have opened up a hornets nest here havent I, and maybe hit a nerve or two to boot? You've even set your Grandad on me! Or, is he one of the stalkers that you refer to? If you can't take criticism then don't put yourself up for it, heat and the kitchen and all that. I dont aspire to being a proficient Guitar player but I can acknowledge bad playing when I here it.

  • An American magazine criticised my timing in a review a few years back. So, yes you hit a nerve. I've taken more criticism over the years from fuckwits who are paid to do it, without having to endure more tiresome stuff on here from people who appear to take delight in doing it for nothing!

  • I glean no 'delight' from criticism and maybe in this instance, I should have put more 'meat on the bones' within my initial salvo therefore making it constructive, lesson learnt on that one :-) I do suggest that if the problem of 'timing' has been highlighted before, then maybe, you shouldnt shrug it off! Sorry about the bad spelling in my previous message i.e. here - hear

  • No worries. Timing is sometimes something that is compromised when you're in a studio, or in front of the red light etc when nerves kick in. If you were to look at some of my other videos, particularly the live ones, then this is not so much the case. I suppose what hurts is when you say I'm playing 'bad' guitar. A bit of poor timing doesn't make a bad player and a lot of people think I'm fairly decent!?!

  • i think you are pretty awesome!! im looking at the 03re whast the difference?

  • Hi there,

I think the OM-03re has slightly wider lower and upper bouts, rosewood back & sides, and comes with a LR Baggs pick-up (top notch!). Hope this helps and ta for the comment

    Phil

  • I just bought this model and put the top knotch LR baggs pickup element intead of jus ta volume controle it has tone aswell.!

  • You played that Guitar with no sense of timing or feel. I suspect that you where to busy trying to be a smart arse with your speed and harmonics - shame. Maybe in some respects you have acquired some bad habits over a period time, after all, perfect practice makes perfect I suspect that you can learn timing but feel is another thing methinks?

  • I will now proceed to sod off, as suggested by one of your loyal supporters. Maybe Ill go and look at some of your Grandads efforts, hmmm :-) I didn't mean to offend anyone here - I just say it as I see it!

    Stay loose and peace out

  • Just to back Phil up here (not that he needs any backup from me) show us what you can do BEFORE commenting like this. I am not a great player, in fact I am in awe of Phil and some of the other great players on here, but at least I had the guts to put up my own efforts before commenting on the work of other people.

  • Can you do better? When you can, criticise. Until then, sod off and let those of us who enjoy good playing enjoy it in peace. And don't just say "yes I can", post something and prove it.

  • You're at it again you bugger, making us mere mortals feel inadequate.

  • Nice demo, thanks.

    Enjoyed the finger style.

If you think the Larrivee OM-03R sounds good with finger style

you should give a listen to the Larrivee

SD-50. I have one and its best of class and better than most guitars I've played under $8,000. You can find new SD-50s for less than 1/4 that !

    - Larry

  • Cheers Larry, I'll check it out. I was only given this one to demonstrate, and although I think it gives good 'bang for the buck', it ain't replacing my Santa Cruz!

  • Yes, a Santa Cruz OOO was my 2nd choice. It was $3800.

The SD-50 is its equal in my opinion,

    having played both.

The L-03 Larrivee is there ALL-AROUND

    entry level guitar.

The SD-50 is the finger style players

delight - 12 fret, slot head, wide neck

    enlarged sound hole.

Here is a video comparing the L-03R to the SD-50. I have no connection to this dealer.

    cheers- Larry
