Here is my interpretation: Donnie Darko is selected by fate to save the world after Frank (the bunny) disturbs it. Frank is the mistake in fate since he saved donnie from his death in the start of the movie. After this happens the world turns weird since fate has been tricked.

Donnie realizes this after Roberta Sparrow or Grandma Death tells him that every creature dies alone. To save the world Donnie must destroy the mistake (Kill frank) and go back through time to die and 2 accept his faith.

My favorite film, believe me, it aint that confusing after reading some explanations on wikipedia for example and thinking about what the heck happend and how is it connected with the others events. Thats great about this movie. And the Director's Cut version HIGHLY recommended, it is actually other movie, more meaningful.

Wow,seems a lot of people don't understand it. The whole movie takes place in a Tangent Universe, which will collapse. When it collapses,if the gateway between the Tangent and the Primary(real)universe is open, the Primary Universe will cease to exist. It is up to the reciever(Donnie Darko)to close the gateway.The way he does this is by dying.Along the way, there are people who help him close the gateway, called the Manipulated living and Manipulated dead. Hopefully you understand it better now.
