Leonard was way faster, stronger, punched harder and had better defense than mayweather jr. has. Plus leonard fought the best of the era (legends). And back then it was 15 rds and they fought not ran and held. not even close. would be an easy fight for leonard, mayweather has no heart.

Leonard showed good defense when he wanted, but otherwise got caught often, and was never the defensive fighter Floyd is. He was better in every other area though, and would've beaten Floyd for sure.

No one is discrediting Leonard or justifying Duran for quitting. However, everyone needs to watch the entire fight. SRL was winning but by a narrow margin. Maybe a pt or 2 w/7rounds left. I don't think either man behaved like a champ that nite. Duran quit and Leonard clowned. They should have had the 3rd fight in 80 to settle the score.

I think DB6989 is referring to the 3rd fight. We all know they fought twice in 1980. Its a fact that Duran had to lose 30 to 40lbs in two months to make weight and fight Leonard in New Orleans. Look there's no excuse, Duran was not prepared but don't make it look like Leonard was too much. SRL deserved to win because his game plan and preparation was better. The 1st time around was a great fight on both parts and the better fighter won.

the first fight leonard chose to stand and trade with duran and he almost pulled it off, i have seen the fight many times and leonard won the the last 3 rounds to make it a split decision! the 2nd fight was different story and was duran's to fight leonard at his own game! boxing is boxing and leonard outboxed him full stop! duran could not handle it so he quit!

Duran won a unanimous decision not a split. Duran coasted at the end because he was so far ahead. If you think Leonard outboxed Duran in the second fight your entitled to your opinion. Then he outboxed him by 1 or 2 pts with 7 rounds to go. Somewhere on the net I've saw the judges score cards they were all like 67-65 or 66-65 with Duran ahead in the 8th.

You're right, KNOW is not the right word. My opinion is Duran was better. My opinion was reinforced in the first fight. You're right everyone is entitled to their opinion. I've got no problems with people who think Leonard is better. However, I find that most Duran detractors do not acknowledge that Duran was past his prime when he beat a prime Leonard. We agree that everyone's entitled to their opinion, but the guy I saw fight DeLaHoya would have been destroyed by SRL or Duran. You mention defense, Duran was a master at slipping and rolling with punches. Look at Duran's face in the 70s and early 80s, he's unmarked straight nose, its remarkable. Leonard could match Floyd speed and BOTH SRL and Duran could hit MUCH HARDER than Mayweather.

Duran's prime was as a lightweight between 72-78. By 1980 he was already on the decline but still great. Any IDIOT knows this. Don't just read what I write try comprehension. By the way, DeJesus was a GREAT boxer. He had the misfortune of coming around during Duran's reiogn of terror. The fights are on Youttube check them out.

duran would have lost if he had boxed leonard as a lightweight! to small against a welter weight! duran was 29 when he fought leonard in 1980 and not past his prime! in those 8 years he grew in to a welterweight and the 1st fight was probably his greatest performance! obviously you are a duran man and i am leonard man! if leonard had chose to box the 1st fight he would have won! that would have made it 3 for leonard and 0 for duran! instead it ended up 2-1 for leonard in the history books!

The first fight was a classic and Leonard fought great he was just in against a superior fighter/boxer. The 2nd fight SRL deserved. They should have fought the 3rd in 81. That would have settled the score while both were at or close to their prime. SRL didn't want to risk his future paydays with Hearns and Hagler so he made a smart business decision and declined to give Duran a 3rd fight until '89 when Duran was 38yrs old.

You can watch and see when Duran quit, Leonard was not clowning; but rather landing shot after shot, while Duran could not land cleanly.

Two great boxers had two great fights. Both made mistakes in their loss, and performed incredibly in victory. That's the way I see it. Congrats to them both.
