Looks like a tanker jet, made for refueling fighter jets in mid-air. There were F18's up around the United States, especially along the coast and major hubs, they were ordered to intercept any unidentified aircraft in the air that day. No one was sure if there were any more hijacked airliners on their way for other targets, so it was strictly military and Air Force 1 up after 11am that day.

OK. It COULD be Air Force 1. I thought I had heard that, from when he left Sarasota, FL, Bush was taken by AF1 to an air base in Nebraska. @denechezhe why the time DUH, if you bother to R E A D, this was shot in Illinois at 720pm. That's when we were outside. We had watched events all day on tv and knew the no fly was in effect. I would say that is a KC 135 refueler as well, but It is possible that it also could be AF1. Bush was flown to Offutt, AFB in Omaha, Nebraska on Sept 11th for safety. Once all aircraft were accounted for that day, Bush asked to be flown back to Washington, DC so that he could address the nation from the oval office. I am not sure at what time he made that address, but if you are flying from Omaha to Washington, DC... you would fly right over illinois on your way.

That is a KC-135 From Scott AFB, IL. They were conducting refueling missions for the fighters that were up over the United States protecting us from further attacks. If you look at the video carefully, you will see the four engines and boom (41 secs in).

If you have some footage of a jet in the sky that late on 9/11, post it. Seems like I have one of the only clips of a jet in the sky that late in the day. I just wanted to know what kind of jet it was. My only claim is I filmed what I saw.

Looking Glass, and a couple other com birds were all airborne later that day. One of these is likely your plane.

Like I described, in 2003 i used my new computer to take the camcorder video and make it digital and put it on a dvd. Then in 2006 I took it off the dvd and uploaded it asking what kind of plane it was. We are a hub for Chicago traffic. Seeing no planes all afternoon was eerie. Then this lone big black jet comes through. I just wanted to know what kind it was.

@denechezhe why the time DUH, if you bother to R E A D, this was shot in Illinois at 720pm. That's when we were outside. We had watched events all day on tv and knew the no fly was in effect. Being a hub for Chicago air traffic, we have lots of air traffic. Seeing no jets was strange. Seeing the jet come in from the west I got the camera and shot what I could. I made no claim other than ask what kind of jet it is

I would say that is a KC 135 refueler as well, but It is possible that it also could be AF1. Bush was flown to Offutt, AFB in Omaha, Nebraska on Sept 11th for safety. Once all aircraft were accounted for that day, Bush asked to be flown back to Washington, DC so that he could address the nation from the oval office. I am not sure at what time he made that address, but if you are flying from Omaha to Washington, DC... you would fly right over illinois on your way.

This wasn't the only jet in the air on september 11th ; ) Suprisingly, you could see 2 jets near the pentagon, when something crashed into it... 2 planes were caught on tape... a gray one above the pentagon and a white jet that was flying over the white house... also in shanksville, where flight 93 "was coming down", people saw a military jet flying directly over their houses... so there are still questions about this planes, but noone wants to give anyone an answer! ; )

Most likely it was a tanker....a KC-135 to be exact.Remember,only military aircraft were allowed to fly after the order to ground all flights was given.Remember too that there were quite a few fighters flying around just in case the unthinkable happened...and they had orders to shoot whatever was flying unauthorized down....tankers had to be up to replenish those fighters already in the air...

I was in Toledo, Ohio that day and I went to a grocery store in the afternoon at around 3 or 4 and saw a jet coming from the north, very high as I could see it's exhaust contrail, and it did a 180 and headed back. I'm not sure if it even entered Ohio airspace as it was very high and coming from Michigan. Perhaps it was military or Canadian. Who knows?

That is a KC-135 From Scott AFB, IL. They were conducting refueling missions for the fighters that were up over the United States protecting us from further attacks. If you look at the video carefully, you will see the four engines and boom (41 secs in).

I have seen a photo taken of the contrails left by AF1 and escorts. At the time I recorded this AF1 had already landed in Washington. We all know the planes were grounded. I happened to be able to run in the house get the camcorder and get this short video. I would just like to know what kind of jet it is. Like it or not, it was in the air that day.

here was an aircraft allowed to fly that day. Air Force One. With such an attack, the president isnt safe, therefore he must stay airborne. With all other planes grounded, AFO could fly safely using false names to hide it's identity. It's confirmed that even air force bases didnt know the identity of the plane for security reasons.

@aviationwingnut well, shitty jerk, since the only camera I had in 2001 was a Panasonic VHS-C camcorder and I wasn't expecting to see any planes since all were grounded, I had to run in the house and come back out and get what footage I could. If you have some footage of a jet in the sky that late on 9/11, post it. Seems like I have one of the only clips of a jet in the sky that late in the day. I just wanted to know what kind of jet it was. My only claim is I filmed what I saw.

If you did shoot that on 9/11, great for you. Looks like a 747 in the few frames it's not so out of focus or jerky to even barely see it.

Tankers out of Oklahoma City, Pittsburgh and a couple other bases were airborne to keep the fighters fueled...IN ADDITION, there are a number of radar and "command and control" aircraft that use the 707 airframe. Looking Glass, and a couple other com birds were all airborne later that day. One of these is likely your plane.

Learn your aircraft. That's either a KC-135 air refueling plane or EC-135 Electronic Counter Measures and surveillence aircraft. The military still had flights up after the attacks. I know, I was in the USAF. That's what we do, control the skies where there's any threat.
