@justindon57yahoo I'd say he WAS the best drummer of all time. Slightly more recent heavy metal drummers are really showing some stuff these days. Jan Axel Blomberg, Kjetil Manheim, in fact, most well known extreme metal drummers. David Gray of Akercocke is a personal favourite.
I'm amazed to the point of tears, at how AMAZING this band is. I'm not even an old guy that knows everything about Rush. I'm a 16 year old girl that grew up on this, and I would listen to Rush all day and night, all the time if I could. My favorite band, period. This, and pretty much every other song they have, is more beautiful than any sound to ever exist. I'm being a little over-dramatic, but I'm having a moment.
@TheSlevaslava Do you really think I can pick a favorite? I have a list of favorites, and I think all of them end up on there. Lol. I've had Earthshine stuck in my head recently though. Amazing.
Hmmm. Dumbass, what do you mean they haven't killed us off? It's early yet. Were you expecting that deforestation and the like would kill us off in an instant like a nuclear bomb? An instant in earth time is hundreds of years. Seriously!
yo yo yo.....THAT'S GEDDY'S KID IN THE BEGINNING!!! And, you gotta love the nod to Kubrick when Ged's kid rides the bomb like in Strangelove......Just my 2 cents.
I've loved Rush for as long as I can remember, but I always found Grace Under Pressure depressing. No fault of the band... it was just a bad time in history, and this record reflects it.. so I do give them credit. The early 80's nuclear scare was pretty ugly.

Yes mate, it's one if not the most, succesfull band that's considered progressive rock band in history. They did great in all areas, super good songs and they even sold well.
Rush were of an era. And that era was one where technology begun to work its way into music. Their song The Spirit of Radio highlights this. The thing they have going for them is their sheer talent and technical capabilities. Everything they do is precise and timed to perfection. @safcdude I totally agree with everything except that "Rush were of an era" they are just as relevant today as they were back when they hit big in the late 70's
Some of you need a history lesson. Any idea what the D.E.W. line is? Google it. It's the same name as this song, and for a reason. When this song came out I was stationed at Minot Air Force Bace in the heart of S.A.C. country during the Cold War. If you think it wasn't relevant - you're wrong, and too young to remember. The video is pretty cheesy, but the song is spot on. The Manhattan project by Rush is also about nukes (obviously). Another good one. Rush is a thinking mans hard rock band.
They said they wrote Countdown after being invited by NASA to watch a space shuttle launch. They said it was like watching a building taking off. Most people don't get that close to see how massive it is. I love this song as well.

I stopped listening to Rush after Signals, saw them live in Edinburgh in May 83 they were awesome, a wee bit boring but great. I find all this stuff unbearably cheesy and if this was a song by another band other than Rush it would have long slipped into anonymity. How can Rush fans say any of this 80`s guff is good? Same with Yes, good in the 70s crap in the 80s...just going through the motions I guess. It`s soulless, chorus pedal based garbage, well played mind you. I like Alex`s suit though.

@masvx If the bell cure you are referring to is one indicating the magnitude of the severity of the situation when compared to the predictions that preceded 30-40 years ago then we would have to be in the at least five standard deviations to the left.
And yes, a factory has no right to spew chemicals into your air any more than a garbage company's truck has the right to dump trash on your lawn. That is why libertarians support remedies through property, contract and tort law.
@mjohnson801 If anything, the non-disaster non-catastrophe gulf oil spill is the perfect example of how the media and politicians tend to hype environmental problems. Thanks for your help.
@mjohnson801 Look... the point I am trying to make is that predictions of slow global annihilation due to the oil spill from media pundits and politicians were mere scare-mongering and that such actions have been very common over the past 45 years or so. Should one write off ALL predictions of environmental doom? Of course not.... but you really should start to see a pattern emerging.
Namely, that the news LOVES a great eco-scare story.
I'll come back to this thread on April 20th 2011. c ya
@highonhayek There is more money to be lost by VERY powerful people by being environmentally conscious than any kind of motive for conspiracy from 90% (yes, that's an accurate number) of all global scientists with peer-reviewed, empirical evidence to have some sort of a conspiracy to make people scared. it just doesn't make any sense. Frankly I think climate change deniers are just looking for a philosophy to back up their own selfishness.
@mjohnson801 The question is really not whether the climate undergoes frequent change; certainly it does. The question is the extent to which humanity causes those changes. The answer is that science does not know the extent of humanity's impact, so this is the crux of the debate.
@Blndrfist The overwhelming consensus of earth scientists DO ACCEPT (believe is not even the right term) climate change. That big piece Greenland that broke off yesterday believes it. The thousands of dead jellyfish on the coast of both Spain and California believe it. How is making changes in what we know is going to harm us a bad thing? Whether your personal belief system accepts blame for it or not?
@mjohnson801 I'm fairly certain that the overwhelming majority of ANY group of scientists believe that the climate changes and is even changing now. This is because climate is not, and has never been, a constant. Once again, the question is whether these changes are man caused and, if so, is that a "bad" thing? So YOUR belief systems really don't matter at all; that climate change occurs in a "bad" way because of man is YOUR burden to prove not mine.
@mjohnson801 Wrong; it is not proven, it is only claimed. Grand unified theories of climate change are filled with fail for several reasons. The proof falls short of the claims thus far.
@mjohnson801 Right...In other words, you're unable to prove your claim so you'll just just to stick your head in the sand. Sorry, man made global warming is not yet proven; it is suspected and there are indications of contribution. Yet the claim that man is the PRIMARY cause of global warming (the claim made by you warming fanatic types) has yet to be demonstrated; ever. Fail for you.
@Blndrfist whatever blows your skirt up. you're wrong, anyone that even does so little as to watch Discovery channel has more understanding of what's going on than you do by listening to Rush Limbaugh, but whatever. 90% scientific consensus versus your conspiracy theory bullshit.
@mjohnson801 You're pure imbecile to believe shit you see on TV. You're also wrong regarding "consensus" within the scientific community. There is no conspiracy theory moron. The grand global theory has yet to be proven; you can jump up and down all you like but it's not going to make it true.
@highonhayek we've beat off (lololol) species extinction by evolving. it won't last forever because we kinda fucked ourselves but we got alot more time left than we probably should have
Another clever nuclear disaster/pop culture reference: doesn't the kid riding the missile remind you of the famous scene from Dr. Strangelove where Slim Pickens rides the bomb down on to the target?
What you all should remember is how at the time this video was made, the idea of all out nuclear war was always a real possibility. The "Reds" were still a perceived threat and the rhetoric between the "west" and the "east" was at an all time low point. An individuals hope was if they did drop "the big one" it would land right on top of your head since surviving the fallout would be a far worse fate to have to endure.
Brings back memories of watching Much Music on my satellite dish in the US. This was just after the channel launched with Chris Ward and JD Roberts (Now CNN's John Roberts) as the first DJs. What ever happened to music since those days? I need a time machine.
WTF...mindblowing, you mean CNN's John Roberts is actually JD Roberts of Much Music's olden days..wow. I just had a weird flashback of him and Erica Ehm!
I like the "futuristic" instruments the guys used for this video..Steinberger bass and Neil had electronic Simmons pads..classic! Those pads suck btw.
Yup - same guy. Some place in my junk collection I may have a beta tape of him and Chris Ward busting through a paper barrier onto the Much set for the first time. JD Roberts always was the more serious DJ and did a lot of interviews. When He left Much he went to CBS for a time but when he was passed over for an anchor slot he moved to CNN.
My first ever Rush concert was the Grace Under Pressure Tour at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, 1984. I always liked their stuff before that, but unless you've seen them live, you cannot understand the awesomeness.
To get the best experience, turn on the HQ option in the video (if you haven't already enabled it in the Account settings) -- not only will you get a higher-quality video, but the audio is in Stereo... and it sounds AMAZING thru headphones, if I don't say so myself ;-)
I realize that it was the 80's and all, but Geddy needed to toss that Steinberger in the nearest receptacle and grab his trusty Rickenbacker.
Those things just irritate me.

And yes, a factory has no right to spew chemicals into your air any more than a garbage company's truck has the right to dump trash on your lawn. That is why libertarians support remedies through property, contract and tort law.

@highonhayek or could it be that we took steps to delay such a fate? *cough cough* gulf oil spill...
mjohnson801 1 year ago
@mjohnson801 If anything, the non-disaster non-catastrophe gulf oil spill is the perfect example of how the media and politicians tend to hype environmental problems. Thanks for your help.
highonhayek 1 year ago
@highonhayek I'd believe the media over what is being said by the company that caused the whole thing. hows about you go eat some raw gulf oysters?
mjohnson801 1 year ago
@mjohnson801 Look... the point I am trying to make is that predictions of slow global annihilation due to the oil spill from media pundits and politicians were mere scare-mongering and that such actions have been very common over the past 45 years or so. Should one write off ALL predictions of environmental doom? Of course not.... but you really should start to see a pattern emerging.
Namely, that the news LOVES a great eco-scare story.
I'll come back to this thread on April 20th 2011. c ya
highonhayek 1 year ago
@highonhayek There is more money to be lost by VERY powerful people by being environmentally conscious than any kind of motive for conspiracy from 90% (yes, that's an accurate number) of all global scientists with peer-reviewed, empirical evidence to have some sort of a conspiracy to make people scared. it just doesn't make any sense. Frankly I think climate change deniers are just looking for a philosophy to back up their own selfishness.
mjohnson801 1 year ago
@mjohnson801 The question is really not whether the climate undergoes frequent change; certainly it does. The question is the extent to which humanity causes those changes. The answer is that science does not know the extent of humanity's impact, so this is the crux of the debate.
Blndrfist 1 year ago
@Blndrfist The overwhelming consensus of earth scientists DO ACCEPT (believe is not even the right term) climate change. That big piece Greenland that broke off yesterday believes it. The thousands of dead jellyfish on the coast of both Spain and California believe it. How is making changes in what we know is going to harm us a bad thing? Whether your personal belief system accepts blame for it or not?
mjohnson801 1 year ago
@mjohnson801 I'm fairly certain that the overwhelming majority of ANY group of scientists believe that the climate changes and is even changing now. This is because climate is not, and has never been, a constant. Once again, the question is whether these changes are man caused and, if so, is that a "bad" thing? So YOUR belief systems really don't matter at all; that climate change occurs in a "bad" way because of man is YOUR burden to prove not mine.
Blndrfist 1 year ago
@Blndrfist lol...it IS proven! you just say it's a conspiracy of some kind.
mjohnson801 1 year ago
@mjohnson801 Wrong; it is not proven, it is only claimed. Grand unified theories of climate change are filled with fail for several reasons. The proof falls short of the claims thus far.
Blndrfist 1 year ago
@Blndrfist *sigh*....ok...you and your tinfoil hat know more than the scientists do. happy?
and this song is great too.
mjohnson801 1 year ago
@mjohnson801 Right...In other words, you're unable to prove your claim so you'll just just to stick your head in the sand. Sorry, man made global warming is not yet proven; it is suspected and there are indications of contribution. Yet the claim that man is the PRIMARY cause of global warming (the claim made by you warming fanatic types) has yet to be demonstrated; ever. Fail for you.
Blndrfist 1 year ago
@Blndrfist whatever blows your skirt up. you're wrong, anyone that even does so little as to watch Discovery channel has more understanding of what's going on than you do by listening to Rush Limbaugh, but whatever. 90% scientific consensus versus your conspiracy theory bullshit.
I pick scientific consensus.
mjohnson801 1 year ago
@mjohnson801 You're pure imbecile to believe shit you see on TV. You're also wrong regarding "consensus" within the scientific community. There is no conspiracy theory moron. The grand global theory has yet to be proven; you can jump up and down all you like but it's not going to make it true.
Blndrfist 1 year ago
@Blndrfist I can tell by your name calling how superior you are. how could I hope to compete with your greatness?
mjohnson801 1 year ago
@mjohnson801 Quite correct; you cannot. Now run back and play in your puddle like a good child.

@highonhayek I am a huge fan of the Austrian school, and I think nothing but libertarian thoughts, so we should be mostly in agreement.
That aside, how the fuck can you something so fucking stupid?
Jakomancer 1 year ago
@highonhayek I am going to pretend that you aren't as stupid as your comment suggests, if I don't then I will lose hope for humanity.

Another clever nuclear disaster/pop culture reference: doesn't the kid riding the missile remind you of the famous scene from Dr. Strangelove where Slim Pickens rides the bomb down on to the target?
FanaticalWind 2 years ago
What you all should remember is how at the time this video was made, the idea of all out nuclear war was always a real possibility. The "Reds" were still a perceived threat and the rhetoric between the "west" and the "east" was at an all time low point. An individuals hope was if they did drop "the big one" it would land right on top of your head since surviving the fallout would be a far worse fate to have to endure.
Of course the weapons still exist............

Brings back memories of watching Much Music on my satellite dish in the US. This was just after the channel launched with Chris Ward and JD Roberts (Now CNN's John Roberts) as the first DJs. What ever happened to music since those days? I need a time machine.
JWKessler 2 years ago
WTF...mindblowing, you mean CNN's John Roberts is actually JD Roberts of Much Music's olden days..wow. I just had a weird flashback of him and Erica Ehm!
I like the "futuristic" instruments the guys used for this video..Steinberger bass and Neil had electronic Simmons pads..classic! Those pads suck btw.
SLSheehan 2 years ago
