  • Yes Call of Duty. The people who watch Extra Credits want to subscribe to your overpriced social network

  • You know what puts fear into my heart? Chrysallids.

  • @117superdude the book?

  • @MrVizionary2012 /facepalm

Ever heard of "X-Com UFO Defense" or "UFO Enemy Unknown"?

  • IMO i blame all the FPS on the market alot of gamers today dont have the patience for survival horror games which i think is sad

  • @meg5493 if that was the case we wouldn't have rpg's as well... but the succes of fps definitly has changed the modern horror genre

  • @FancyTophatDude well rpgs arent as bad i love rpgs and fps but fps have changed alot of genres in gaming which i dont like

  • You are all so right, Geeze.. Designer's nowdays need to take a step back and look at themselves along with their games.

  • "As gamers, if we want more real horror games, we're gonna have to show developers that we don't need the flashiest graphics and the most photo-realistic characters to buy a horror game."

Ok. How do I do that? Go back and buy old horror games? Boycott the new action-adventure games?

  • @therealfavs Buy the Penumbra serie, buy Amnesia.the Dark descent and play the free web game BlackWell.

  • I'm surprised that they didn't say anything about Amnesia.

  • @lordwindowlicker Completely agreed. Amnesia is one of the true horror game as they should be, and its predecessor, Penumbra, deserves an honorable mention at least. Though I guess it would partly undermine the author's point, as Amnesia has very compelling, realistic visuals for the most part.

  • @moozooh have you seen it? maybe it's just my PC, but it looks like Unreal 1 for me.

  • @mascotbeaver104 Seen what, Amnesia? Yeah, played through it twice on a reasonably powerful PC. The visual design is very effective and conveys a good sense of realism without relying on sandbox features typical of today's action games; it is carried out mainly by attention to small details and the integral approach where the sound, the visuals, and the storytelling all work together for a more convincing result.

  • @moozooh Sorry, I misread your comment, I thought you said it was photorealistic. Nice response, though.

  • @lordwindowlicker the episode is older than amnesia

  • @Fr0zen0RB

Is it really? Well, it's not older than the other penumbra games.

  • @lordwindowlicker Amnesia =/= Penumbra and I was only talking about Amnesia

  • @Fr0zen0RB

Yet, you were responding to MY comment. The one setting the topic was the one who started it, and they are essentially the same thing. So, they could have mentioned Penumbra.

  • i found metro 2033 to be creepy as hell its dark it creepy and kinda scary in some parts most of the game is freaky but some parts of it almost made me fall out of my seat but i dont think i would count it as horror but its close

  • the first condemned game was pretty creepy, if you played it with the lights off. the sequel...not so much

  • Dead Space and Dead Space 2 is the real horror games =D

  • @DirtVids3 No their not. They fall under the action-adventure that was explained in this vid. All Dead Space and it's sequel offers is jump scares, ways to startle you. It has no lasting appeal. If you're scared by these games then I wouldn't want to see you try out a real horror game.

  • This is probally the best thing I've ever watched on YouTube if I could I would like this 10x

  • @CrimRage watch all of the videos at penny-arcade

  • For all people wondering, these are just old episodes uploaded onto youtube. They use to be on the escapist, but they fell out and now are uploading new videos on Penny arcade tv. This episode was made a while ago, which is why there is no mention of Amnesia(and im guessing they haven't heard about, or neglected to mention penumbra). So, just go onto Penny arcade if you want to see the new ones!

  • I'd like to see an extra creditz list of favorite horror games the next time you do a "best of" video!

  • Just got amnesia. Now that's how you do a horror game.

  • I find Horror tiring as a game genre. In a movie you can abandon the characters and just detach yourself from the horror that is inflicted upon them.

But when it comes to games you cannot detach yourself and play the game, since our medium forces immersion.

I find it even more tiring since my mind is playing against me in this genre...

  • OMG continuing to be awsome keep it up EC.

  • So... I guess this episodes is only about console horror games? I mean Penumbra was a great survival horror game.

  • @Dresos so was amnesia but EC have already credited Frictional games on their great ability to scare the shit out of us and it does talk to PC in a way because well they are the ones who get the best graphics and i know the first thing any PC player brings up to show "PC is better than consoles" is the graphics thing.

  • 2:07 I'm Trying!!!

    lolz!!!

  • i want a horror game like the movie Stay Alive!!

  • Can you (ExtraCreditz) put sign in the title of reposted episodes? I can't remember all the old ones titles, but would like to know when I've received new content.

  • a game that mixes horror-survival and action adventure is resident evil revelations. while im not entirely sure of the plot (tho it´s always pretty bad for RE games) it seems to mix it pretty well with segments of survival horror and segments of brainless shooting with near infinite ammo. which is using the "shotgun effect" to hit as large an audience. by not totally alienating people who like horror or the ones who are not too happy about horror.

if you have a 3DS try the demo to see the horror

  • Another problem with not doing horror that way anymore is the overall reluctance in game developers to embrace limitations. They prefer to show off how much they can do in a game instead of letting the imagination of gamers do all the work. This applies to most game genres.

  • Dead Space 1 was my favorite of the two. Really hope Dead Space 3 is as scary as the first.

  • I LOVE YOU GUYS

  • Bioshock was one of the few games I played that scared the shit out of me. The camera mechanic (borrowed from fatal frame) was a good addition to the game if you ask me. Anyone also feel the same?

  • @MidwayWuzzupman Nope, because the graphics were very carricatural almost comical.

  • Show and don't tell = great for action games

Tell and don't show = great for horror/atmosphere

  • I had not watched this one before, good thing you are uploading your old ones, i really enjoy watching them, even if im not a gamer, you make it seem really interesting :D

  • How come you guys didn't mention Dead Space?

  • @qwertyisyourfriend its not really "scary" granted, it startles me every once and while. but for the most part. its more action packed then scary. granted, in the beginning of each game, its scary. but as soon as i get my weapons with stockpiled ammo. i dont really fear enemies

  • @tjl1297 Agreed.

  • WHat i'd love is an Aliens styled universe set surviveal horror..

    Recepe:

-Colonial marine, extremly limited ammounts of ammo.

-You are hunted by aliens, not hunting them, , you are trying to survive, not save the day.

-Aliens are fast, hard to kill and best of all, you dont see them that much :3 => Play on sound as in Amnesia.

-if you face say, more than one or two.. there should be only one solution, run like *ck, slam doors close, shut them in their faces and hide, cry like a baby xD

    -

  • @grahwo Problem with"fps horror games" Is that you get so much guns, you can just blast away anything =P

  • I would still say that Dead Space is probably my favorite horror game from this generation. If it isn't, then Amnesia ties for first.

  • Haha! Amnisia fixed all this :D Good work guys!

  • This video was made before the Souls' series and Amnesia.

  • Um... Amnesia?

  • I'm playing Dark Souls and it's scary as shit at times.

  • OK, Seriously....Did you get a new audio recording device this week? Your every breath is loud and clear. In fact, the timing of your delivery seems less "personable" and more "formulaic" for some reason...though I know better.....or maybe it's my headphones....

  • @JChalant

agreed. I think I hear the audio- clipping of each piece rather than the flow I'm accustomed too. Hmmmm.

  • @OMGOTM

Not that the message is less important, but rather I'm distracted from the message for some reason. I *hope* it's my sound...wouldn't that be nice!! I HEAR EVERYTHING BE-YOTCHES!!!!

  • @JChalant Any differences you hear is likely because this is a old episode. Not sure how old but presumably, because they didn't mention it, before Amnesia was released mid 2010

  • ok h heard enough, dear esther here i come!

  • Horror games are absolutely thriving now but just in unexpected places. And thats the modding community. Stuff like the cube experimental mod for FO3, oblivion lost, nightmare house 2, dear esther and even the stanley parable convey a sense of real unease and insignificance crucial to horror. If you want true horror titles go on to moddb. But be warned, half of them are called something along the lines of 'Z0M813 AP0C01YP53 L0L0L0L0L'

  • Why? why the stupid high voice? I saved the video of you in real life. Are you hiding something? how can I take this seriously?

  • "Dead Space is not scary, it's startling. I was startled when a opossum jumped into my window, it doesn't make him the marsupial answer to Stanley Kubrick!" We need fewer startling games, just like we need fewer startling movies.

  • Your conclusion is correct and pointless. Essentially we have to buy more crap horror games for an undetermined period so publishers will back developers making actually decent horror games. I'm sorry but I'm not bankrolling bad games on a vague hope of something better somewhere down the line.

  • Amnesia was pretty fucking horrifying

  • 1:40 Psychonauts, Beyond good and evil and Shadow of the colossus? Best collection ever.

  • Dear Esther is getting a full release on Steam, btw.

  • After watching the Resident Evil 6 trailer, it feels like Capcom is trying to kill the survival horror genre. :(

  • I wish Fatal Frame 4 would be released out in the USA!

ha ha is it sad even though I've already seen this episode, I go eh it was a good one and it's been a LONG time since I've seen it ha ha ha! rewatch it anyway

  • Please include the original air date in the description. It would make it a lot easier to place these in my memory bank :)

  • Sadly, the link to the outro song doesn't seem to working any longer.

  • 4:27Massively Multiplayer cover-based farming simulator (turn based)? Wait, what?

  • @Lekelly99 Farmville.

  • Loved that Godzilla inspired picture you used XD

  • Killing Floor is pretty scary. And it's a survival game. 2+2= Survival Horror

  • from where was that picture of the guy/girl who is covered in white and using his hands as eyes

  • @Mrinebriation It's a movie, Pan's labyrinth

  • A great (and also free!) game is The Stanley Parable. It's not a true horror game, but it still feels like one. You can also watch it all on youtube, since the entire game takes about a half hour beat. I think ExtraCreditz actually mentioned this game at one point. Check it out.

  • my version of horror jumping of tf2 to see my team has 5 snipers and 3 medics

  • Comment removed

  • This sounds familiar. I'm thinking of the Halloween 2011 Jimquisition where Sterling explained what made games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent so horrifying. Not only does Amnesia look less than beautiful, but it also incorporates a sense of danger (invincible monsters) and sometimes the unknown (invisible monsters) into the gameplay.

  • I found the survival horror genre!

It's Resident Evil: Revelations on the 3DS

  • special thanks to everyone who ever bought yn xbox game, for demonstrating that they definitely do not need the flashiest most detailed graphics. the low resolution of xbox-skyrim will always wake me up at night in sweat, so horrible lowpoly.

pc gamers use minecraft for the same effect.

  • hey guys why are you no longer on escapist

  • by that definition, saints row 3 is an awesome survival horror game, full of irrational primal instincts.

  • I guess this was made before Amnesia came out?

It seems its up to indie devs to make new horror games :/

  • @lilmagi yeah I'm pretty sure it did.

  • @lilmagi Amen. Amnesia is still the most horrifying game I've ever played. That goddamn water level....

  • @lilmagi Christ... Please dont remind me of that game... get chills just thinking of it

  • @lilmagi Yeah amnesia is so great.

  • @lilmagi God i hope they make a new amnesia.. or maybe i dont.

Just thinking about it makes me creep out

  • @lilmagi well as they said earlier on the episode on innovation it´s a lot less risky for a indie to create a new franchise or to experiment. games like amnesia are made by rather small teams. and they will often be rather limited in funds which they can use to make flashy high detailed modeling. so they choose to work with what they had and see what they could get that was decent and within thier main idea. instead of saying that they needed something specific regardless of the cost.

  • @lilmagi The entire video keeps mentioning "Most recent console generation".

Last I checked, even Amnesia isn't out on any consoles.

Great game, but this is not the topic at hand. The topic is where have the old Silent Hills gone? Where have the old adventure horrors that we had 10 years ago, gone? And why haven't they been replaced.

That's what's up for discussion. Nothing about PC horror.

  • @ExtraCredit Long time subscriber keep up the good work. I'm glad at least one web show on video games takes an intellectual spin on video games.

  • Not much of a fan of Horror Games, or Survival Horror for that matter, but this is still an awesome episode.

  • Must like video....

BUT CANT LIKE WITH NEW BUTTON!

  • is dead space a horror game or just an action game set on a horror scenario?

  • @Hellriper12

Dead Space is very much an action game. It's a lot like the more recent Resident Evil games. It tries to be scary, has a lot of blood and gore, but just... isn't that scary. At least... not scary enough to be a horror game, in my opinion.

  • @00:37 that cant be

  • nice, you had a Sweet Home picture in there.

  • ive always wanted to become a game dev even though i barely know anything about programing but everytime i watch an episode i just want to make a game. i wish i knew the tools to do it.

  • @matrixrory You should watch their"how to become a game dev" episode.

  • @snakepit000 i think ive seen it but ill watch it again. i just want to know where would the first place to go learn something like that for someone who doesnt know a lot about it? like im ok with computers but not brilliant.

  • @matrixrory i know that feeling man. so over the sumer im going to see if i can take classes or something

  • "I'll be back!" 5:21

  • Are you not posting on Penny Arcade now, either?

  • @iSeally

    These are their old ones.

  • @iSeally No no, we're still with Penny Arcade. We're just releasing the older episodes on a few other sites as well. :)

  • @ExtraCreditz Oh, alright. I didn't remember watching this before, so I thought these were new episodes, haha. Keep up the great work!

  • @ExtraCreditz Could you provide us with the original air date of all the old episodes somewhere (probably description box). We all know this industry is changing fast and a little context help.

  • @ExtraCreditz You should label your older videos to remove some of the confusion. It'll still happen, but there'll be less of it...maybe.

  • @ExtraCreditz I never found anything explaining why you guys left the escapist. I was getting some pretty serious withdrawal symptoms :P

  • @ExtraCreditz

I do hope PA is actually PAYING you for your work these days... I, as a fan, wouldn't want another Escapist fiasco for you guys....

  • @ExtraCreditz I read that in your voice XD

  • @SamueltheHedgehog So did I, haha. XD

  • @iSeally

Where better to advertise a video series than Youtube?

  • @Ushio01 I was wondering because they usually don't put full videos on their channel. They usually just post a short clip when a new episode comes out and put a link in the description.

  • @iSeally As far as I'm aware, PA will have the video first, and other sites won't have it for a week or so. Then after that week or so is over, the video will be put on other sites.

  • very nice :)

  • What's this?

    EXTRA Extra credits?

  • First ?
