"As gamers, if we want more real horror games, we're gonna have to show developers that we don't need the flashiest graphics and the most photo-realistic characters to buy a horror game."
Ok. How do I do that? Go back and buy old horror games? Boycott the new action-adventure games?
@lordwindowlicker Completely agreed. Amnesia is one of the true horror game as they should be, and its predecessor, Penumbra, deserves an honorable mention at least. Though I guess it would partly undermine the author's point, as Amnesia has very compelling, realistic visuals for the most part.
@mascotbeaver104 Seen what, Amnesia? Yeah, played through it twice on a reasonably powerful PC. The visual design is very effective and conveys a good sense of realism without relying on sandbox features typical of today's action games; it is carried out mainly by attention to small details and the integral approach where the sound, the visuals, and the storytelling all work together for a more convincing result.
Yet, you were responding to MY comment. The one setting the topic was the one who started it, and they are essentially the same thing. So, they could have mentioned Penumbra.
i found metro 2033 to be creepy as hell its dark it creepy and kinda scary in some parts most of the game is freaky but some parts of it almost made me fall out of my seat but i dont think i would count it as horror but its close
@DirtVids3 No their not. They fall under the action-adventure that was explained in this vid. All Dead Space and it's sequel offers is jump scares, ways to startle you. It has no lasting appeal. If you're scared by these games then I wouldn't want to see you try out a real horror game.
For all people wondering, these are just old episodes uploaded onto youtube. They use to be on the escapist, but they fell out and now are uploading new videos on Penny arcade tv. This episode was made a while ago, which is why there is no mention of Amnesia(and im guessing they haven't heard about, or neglected to mention penumbra). So, just go onto Penny arcade if you want to see the new ones!
@Dresos so was amnesia but EC have already credited Frictional games on their great ability to scare the shit out of us and it does talk to PC in a way because well they are the ones who get the best graphics and i know the first thing any PC player brings up to show "PC is better than consoles" is the graphics thing.
Can you (ExtraCreditz) put sign in the title of reposted episodes? I can't remember all the old ones titles, but would like to know when I've received new content.
a game that mixes horror-survival and action adventure is resident evil revelations. while im not entirely sure of the plot (tho it´s always pretty bad for RE games) it seems to mix it pretty well with segments of survival horror and segments of brainless shooting with near infinite ammo. which is using the "shotgun effect" to hit as large an audience. by not totally alienating people who like horror or the ones who are not too happy about horror.
Another problem with not doing horror that way anymore is the overall reluctance in game developers to embrace limitations. They prefer to show off how much they can do in a game instead of letting the imagination of gamers do all the work. This applies to most game genres.
Bioshock was one of the few games I played that scared the shit out of me. The camera mechanic (borrowed from fatal frame) was a good addition to the game if you ask me. Anyone also feel the same?
I had not watched this one before, good thing you are uploading your old ones, i really enjoy watching them, even if im not a gamer, you make it seem really interesting :D
@qwertyisyourfriend its not really "scary" granted, it startles me every once and while. but for the most part. its more action packed then scary. granted, in the beginning of each game, its scary. but as soon as i get my weapons with stockpiled ammo. i dont really fear enemies
WHat i'd love is an Aliens styled universe set surviveal horror..
Recepe:
-Colonial marine, extremly limited ammounts of ammo.
-You are hunted by aliens, not hunting them, , you are trying to survive, not save the day.
-Aliens are fast, hard to kill and best of all, you dont see them that much :3 => Play on sound as in Amnesia.
-if you face say, more than one or two.. there should be only one solution, run like *ck, slam doors close, shut them in their faces and hide, cry like a baby xD
OK, Seriously....Did you get a new audio recording device this week? Your every breath is loud and clear. In fact, the timing of your delivery seems less "personable" and more "formulaic" for some reason...though I know better.....or maybe it's my headphones....
Not that the message is less important, but rather I'm distracted from the message for some reason. I *hope* it's my sound...wouldn't that be nice!! I HEAR EVERYTHING BE-YOTCHES!!!!
@JChalant Any differences you hear is likely because this is a old episode. Not sure how old but presumably, because they didn't mention it, before Amnesia was released mid 2010
Horror games are absolutely thriving now but just in unexpected places. And thats the modding community. Stuff like the cube experimental mod for FO3, oblivion lost, nightmare house 2, dear esther and even the stanley parable convey a sense of real unease and insignificance crucial to horror. If you want true horror titles go on to moddb. But be warned, half of them are called something along the lines of 'Z0M813 AP0C01YP53 L0L0L0L0L'
"Dead Space is not scary, it's startling. I was startled when a opossum jumped into my window, it doesn't make him the marsupial answer to Stanley Kubrick!" We need fewer startling games, just like we need fewer startling movies.
Your conclusion is correct and pointless. Essentially we have to buy more crap horror games for an undetermined period so publishers will back developers making actually decent horror games. I'm sorry but I'm not bankrolling bad games on a vague hope of something better somewhere down the line.
I wish Fatal Frame 4 would be released out in the USA!
ha ha is it sad even though I've already seen this episode, I go eh it was a good one and it's been a LONG time since I've seen it ha ha ha! rewatch it anyway
A great (and also free!) game is The Stanley Parable. It's not a true horror game, but it still feels like one. You can also watch it all on youtube, since the entire game takes about a half hour beat. I think ExtraCreditz actually mentioned this game at one point. Check it out.
This sounds familiar. I'm thinking of the Halloween 2011 Jimquisition where Sterling explained what made games like Amnesia: The Dark Descent so horrifying. Not only does Amnesia look less than beautiful, but it also incorporates a sense of danger (invincible monsters) and sometimes the unknown (invisible monsters) into the gameplay.
special thanks to everyone who ever bought yn xbox game, for demonstrating that they definitely do not need the flashiest most detailed graphics. the low resolution of xbox-skyrim will always wake me up at night in sweat, so horrible lowpoly.
@lilmagi well as they said earlier on the episode on innovation it´s a lot less risky for a indie to create a new franchise or to experiment. games like amnesia are made by rather small teams. and they will often be rather limited in funds which they can use to make flashy high detailed modeling. so they choose to work with what they had and see what they could get that was decent and within thier main idea. instead of saying that they needed something specific regardless of the cost.
@lilmagi The entire video keeps mentioning "Most recent console generation".
Last I checked, even Amnesia isn't out on any consoles.
Great game, but this is not the topic at hand. The topic is where have the old Silent Hills gone? Where have the old adventure horrors that we had 10 years ago, gone? And why haven't they been replaced.

I find Horror tiring as a game genre. In a movie you can abandon the characters and just detach yourself from the horror that is inflicted upon them.
But when it comes to games you cannot detach yourself and play the game, since our medium forces immersion.
I find it even more tiring since my mind is playing against me in this genre...
