I just installed Solaris 10 on an older computer and it looks great. It runs about like Linux under Gnome. I have to learn how to write scripts. It looks better than Solaris 8 which I had on another computer.
you can dowload vm ware, and set up a virtual machine so you can have your main system and then make a virtual system with solaris 10 on it. they wouldnt overlap and it is easier than having to set up your files so they can cross over :)
it' easy. Boot up the xp cd..create a partion, but leave space for solaris...install xp on that prartition....then boot up the Solaris dvd...create a partion to install solaris on.....then install solaris on that partition....grub should be able to boot to your solaris or xp partion. ;)
Unix/Linux Is the Best platform out there... No question about it... Just Look at the security scheme and how they manage that! No need of nothing to be secure! Just that feature outruns MS Win, AND Mac uses the same scheme of commands to NOT allow viruses and malware DO some serious damage... Google it...

Vista is quite shit, like everything from Microshit and Winstupid ... Mac is the best OS ever ... or did you a think a company which inveloped over 2500 updates for Vista in the first month, could product some good things ?! Down with Microshit ... UNIX ( also Mac, Solaris etc. ) is the right thing to work with !!
I agree... I just hope many applications such as Adobe Master Collection, Office 2007, Maya and 3DMAX,etc will eventually support UNIX system... NOT JUST MAC...
Yes, already right ... but i´m working with every os ... but only if it isn´t mircoshit *g* ... yes now sb say, you are only 14 years old, how can you work with so much os´, i´d like to tell, i´m not stupid, and if you know where to get your ressources, you can work on eg. 5 pcs at the same time with different os´.
@13thpersoncomedy I have it on all of my computers and I love it. The software is great and it is free. I have to remember to donate some money to that company for all the work they have done and the money I saved by not using MS Office.
Ive been running Opensuse now for years, and it does get buggy, but im moving now to Solaris 10, and im sure its gonna be the best thing that ive ever done! :)
It's one big money making scheme. Sun sells it, they train sysadmins to sell it, they then go to the sysadmins' company to sell it.
Sun makes money off the OS through Sun soft/hardware and "enterprise support" then ensures the sysadmin makes a 6 figure salary (off of nothing more than admining a generic UNIX clone).
yeah so far it hasnt found my USB drive, NONE of my 5 ethernet cards and the interface with the whole fake KDE/Java thing is just ugly. Im going back to real Unix.
im interested in getting solaris 10 it looks cool but i have a toshiba satellite with intel celeron processor and 512 ram its that good enough? i tried ubuntu once but i didnt like how i had to wave bye bye to my windows apps but i hear that solaris will run windows apps is this true? if so let me know and also is there a solaris driver that i can use to make my wifi card work with it
You might want to start out with a distro like freespire and when you really get passionate for *nix os's move to something a bit heavier and more sophisticated like Solaris 10, it's a beautiful OS, but it can sometimes be very, very overwhelming to the new user.
Sun seem to be aiming for the serious, high end market. What about people who want to run a desktop, though - is (Open)Solaris faster, will my webcam and sound work, is there a big app repo, and can I watch YouTube clips? Can it take on Ubuntu on those terms?
Solaris requires that you program most of your things that you need. I've tried it (accidentally erasing Windows), and it works. Only problem is that I cannot access the internet because I have a Windows-Based driver for the Ethernet card. It takes a bit of practice to get down, but once you do it can be worth it.
I'm using Solaris snv_76 on a Toshiba Satellite A60 right now and it goes like the Clappers. You can checkout the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) to see if your hardware is supported and there's also a Solaris laptop page with tips and tricks as well as a list of users, their types of laptops and what works and doesn't. Very handy. You need a fair amount of RAM though or it won't even start the installation. What's your laptop?
No, that's a development version. It isn't any more of a version of Solaris than Sid is of Debian. It's just the codebase from which Solaris 11 WILL be built.
Better for who and what purpose? an OS is a tool. Some people need saws, some people need hammers, and people who use windows think they need chromed plastic scissors.
is bsd on business software and GPL software

there are alterntives in UNIX/UNIX-like (Linux) ! you can use OpenOffice instead of office 2007 for example :)
NOTE: you can use "wine" (program) to run some MS programs in linux/UNIX :)
hope that helps

This guy is right: Open solaris is free/open source, and the normal solaris is free (as free of charge) and MOSTLY open source.

That is definitely good enough. Keep in mind though, that power saving features might not work which would be quite bad for mobile use.
But it isn't true that you can run windows Apps, at least not in any way better than with Ubuntu and Wine/VirtualBox/VMWare.

Vista is a client OS ! SunOS is a server OS. it you want to compare, compare with Windows Server 2003 R2 or the next Windows Server 2008
c3dr1cb 4 years ago
Solaris is just Unix.
You can set it up as either client of server use. it can power a workstation, thin client, or giant server cluster.
