  • lol what is the misconception with Opera singers being fat?

  • Meh.

  • I enjoy opera and performed it for 4 years back in undergrad...i respect it a great deal... but man there are just some days i cannot stand it!

  • I'm kind of a fence sitter. I guess I just like it 'cause I know how difficult it is... I don't listen to it...

  • you're a bad actor

  • You don't like rap?

  • I miss you guys

  • i'm studying to be an opera singer. people actually tell me that i need to be fatter. it's weird, 'cause you probably shouldn't be too fat. most opera singers are on the skinny/normal side.

  • @iminyourhead100 Oh my gosh they tell me the same thing. It's a tad annoying.

  • i never understand what their saying haha

  • why insult it?! I thought you were all for an open mind and all that stuff! Seriously bud, if you don't like it, don't talk about it. No need to insult it.

  • I'm a lover and a hater in the sense that I enjoy some kind of opera. I like Wagner and other operas from the Romantic Era (19th century) and some from the Baroque Era (17th to mid 18th century). Classical era and most contemporary opera I don't really enjoy.

  • For some reason, I thought this video was about Oprah....

  • i'm a music major, i'm trained in opera, i find it fascinating (plus every foreign language opera to which I have been has English subtitles) i love making fun of my passion, like a lot of others, so i found this quite humerous and was laughing at the stereotypes that don't really apply in current times (like "the opera ain't over till the fat lady sings". yeah i have never seen an opera yet where the coloratura and dramatic sopranos were fat, actually most of them are toothpicks) jus' saying!

  • Nope I'm a fence sitter. I've grown up in a family of musicians. Pavarotti was pretty much playing when I exited the uterus and Arlene Auger was the soundtrack to my childhood. My siblings grew up fans Opera but for some reason something happened to me. Don't get me wrong, I love Arlene Auger and Pavarotti, but I can't STAND Renee Fleming or Jose Carreras. I only have one favorite opera and that's it. The rest makes me barf. Fence sitter! Right here!

  • oh opera oh opera how i hate you so you make my head hirt with your voice so high and my ears bleed with your talent so low.

  • No fence sitting? Then what's this I'm sitting on everytime someone brings up opera?

  • I would say not understanding them would be the reason people don't enjoy opera. I do, but still.

  • Or you're someone who's never really heard it before. I mean really the closest I've come is Phantom of the Opera (the movie), and I know I can't judge opera based on that hollywood warped vision.

  • @SMFortissimo I think it's important to note the Phantom of the Opera, despite its name and setting, is not an opera. Not at all.

  • @Cdaae663 My point exactly!

  • i love opera. it's everything i don't hate about american idol. and i hate american idol.

  • How much research did you do for this video? That always seems to be a major merit of your work, but as a university student studying music you did not fairly represent both sides very well.

  • Comment removed

  • (continuation) After that point, composers began to set Shakespeare and other literary works to music. They would also write operas about true people and history - maybe an emperor who is in power, etc.

Opera is an incredible art that more people would like if they were raised around music....yenno the real kind, which requires training in music theory and technique. =)

Most of your videos i have seen up to this point have been well researched. I must say i'm a little disappointed this time.

  • @ssriggs Yes but. it hurts my ears? Ive had a limited training in musical theory and technique and such but it simply isnt everyones favourite type of music. Its like olives for example. I find them delicious, but not all do. Then again i have a hatred for dairy and i eat multiple large tomatoes a day. Everyone is different, so not everyone will like it. The fact that it hurts peoples ears and it is old fashioned makes many turn away. But thats beside the point. He gave equal time for each side.

  • @ssriggs (Cont.) Does he have to go into an extremely detailed explanation? He is giving you a few brief facts on just the voice. Not the whole history.

  • If you took a music history class you would learn that in the Baroque -Romantic eras Opera was pretty much the main form of entertainment.

Americans are not very cultured, so the general opinion about music all together is not a very educated one. Opera was popular because It was based on greek legends and tragedies that the general audience member was already familiar with. Do you k now how many settings of the story of Euridice and Orfeo there are? .....many.

  • Rap "music" gave me a reason to like opera...

  • "Whether you love it or hate it - and most people do..."

  • Opera is actually a pretty awesome web browser made by people in Oslo, Norway.

  • I love the opera! In Italy they have amazing singers.

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OPERA!

  • Opera IS an acquired taste. I only began loving it when I started studying Music History while training to play a classical instrument. Some operas are magnificent, but the pop star fans of today will clamor to disagree.

  • parece un comercial de lenguas extranjeras jaja

  • I really don't mind opera, as long as I have a libretto and can actually get into the plot. The Marriage of Figaro is hilarious if you can understand what they are singing.

    "A common maid"

    "An OLD maid"

  • He's wrong about the whole on the fence thing. I may not have a whole lot of love for opera, but I can appreciate what the voice must be doing to create that sound. I'm a singer myself and I would love to have the power, range, and depth of sound that these singer's are capable of. So while I might not enjoy it much myself it mean I can't appreciate the talent behind it.

  • look up the per bristow method it goes through all the flaws of the bel canto method and will help develop an unlimited voice

  • Just goes to show that this idiot knows nothing about the art form at all. Fat opera singers are becoming a thing of the past. Most people dont like because they dont understand it or even try to. Its a very complex and intelligent art form so if your an idiot, like this guy, well then i guess your screwed. He made a good point though. Whats the one thing all those pop singers have in common? A MICROPHONE! Opera singers dont use them. A pop singer would never be able to carry in an opera house.

  • LAWL

  • lol either a lover or a hater. im a hater :P

  • My God He's Hot!

  • One word...

  • OMG LOL
