@fergo123 It's no different to any other engine, a little bigger perhaps but otherwise the same. Until you remember, this engine was once hurtling across the Channel at 300mph, delivering a world of .303 and 20mm pain to any Me-109 or FW190 in its way... Truly the engine that saved the world, they were in everything from the Lancaster to the Hurricane, the Mosquito, the Mustang and of course, the Spitfire.
I like the story about the rich German who was driving his Mercedes at about 120 mph on an autobahn one night and was overtaken by one of those Merlin-powered specials with the RR badge. He rang RR and demanded that they sell him one. They, of course, denied producing such monsters and he just got angrier, offering to pay any price. .
Different versions of the Merlin had different power ratings, ranging between 1000 hp in early versions to around 2000 hp for later generation versions.
@tprdfh51 A lot of variants of the Merlin where built. The most powerful Merlin i know is the Packard V-1650-11 (licence production). It produced a maximum power of nearly 2300 hp. It was double-stage-supercharged and had water injection. A pure monster of a piston engine.
@TheBigTittyTwister wasn`t the Griffon based around the Merlin as well, just larger? If i remember, the Griffon was something like 33-litres (the Merlin 27-litres) and had close to 300hp
@chefmickeyw If i'm right right the Griffon was baded on the R engine, a separate construction, developed years before the Merlin. But the Griffon is definitely larger and more powerful. It's displacement is over 37 litres, not 33, by the way. And maximum engine power was up to about 2400 horse power. A beast of an engine. Perfect for tractor pulling. I'd sell my girlfriend to the devil to get such an engine :-D .

It would be great to see if one wing of the propeller breaks of and causes an extreme inbalance at the crank shaft and so a total crash of this motors ;)
I believe there were 2 or 3 Rolls-Royce Phantom II that were fitted with a Rolls Royce Merlin. All but one were destroyed in accidents. The last 1934 example is owned by Jay Leno and it is driven occasionally.
it used to be in some custom car mags in the 70 s I seem to remember, It wasnt a real rolls they just stuck a rr grill on the front and advertised it as " the worlds fastest rolls royce" until they got sued.
I work on the -220 (F-15 engine). I would love to work on this engine.

thats cool starting 1200 hp engine just by hand
TheLaurencekid 2 years ago 8
@TheLaurencekid
It's impossible to start a Merlin by hand, they have starter motors controlled by the small control panel on the back of the engine.
