I disagree with the comment that Nico's version is better than this one. I am a fan of both Nico & The Fairport Convention/Sandy Denny. Nico's version is excellent, but Sandy's version is totally awesome. The Bob Dylan original from the 'Biograph' compilation is outstanding as well.
I remember walking into the record hunter on fifth ave in manhattan in the summer of 69 and hearing this playing for the first time.I was blown away then and I'm blown away still. To this day I hav'nt heard a female folk singer in the league of sandy denny.Just beautiful.
Nice. Fairport finding good material and doing interesting things. Professional considering how new they were and lineup changes. Did Joe (White Bicycles) Boyd do the engineering? He is an unsung hero in music.
A friend from way back,he was a thief, well he stole a set of tapes from someones car and i traded him drugs for the tapes.Mostly it was show tunes and crappy eighties tunes but one of the tapes was fairport convention. It took only a couple of years for that tape to wear out.The human side of me has many dimensions.
@tom77092-Yes.I have at times of great stress in my life become nothing more than an animal who takes great pleasure in dealing out pain and terror. :(
Of all the varied versions of this song I've always found Sandy Denny's version always sent chills thanks for the post long time ago lot of lost frends who never made it but the songs live on
have loved this song for years and sandy is nectar as ever and ian mathews voice is mellow perfection thank you for posting this and all the info that comes with it thanks all
This has been one of my favorite songs of pure kindness, foe some 30 years. Of course Denny's pure voice makes it much more lovely and perfectly loving than Dylan's rendition. But that's the way "collaboration" goes. Oh, how I wish I could hear her mature voice!
Having seen 'The Art of Negative Thinking' last week, a great film where this song plays as the credits roll, I was once again reminded how fortunate I am that I know this band. Thank you.
Im not sure if you're using the word 'rant' in a negative way but if you are the reason it sounds like a 'rant' is because the only two (known) versions of this that Dylan has recorded were both demos. As it happens I much prefer the 'rant' over this.
yeah, Dylan's version is superior...not b/c it's Dylan, i've heard some great Dylan covers, i.e. I'm Not There Soundtrack,... but this version is to slow...for my taste anyways...

Parts of this song sound rather like "He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother" by The Hollies, also from the same year.

I'm going to have to disagree with many of you and say Bob Dylan's version is just easily the best
BobDylan777007 4 months ago
Sandy's version is tops.No one comes close.
beefoneeto 7 months ago
I never "gotten" Nico's appeal.
But that not withstanding, Sandy Denny's soars over anyone else's version you might care to mention, IMO.

Nico's version is better. Bob Dylan offered it to her first for a reason.

One of my favorite Fairport Convention songs with the late great Sandy Denny. A classic song from a classic album: What we did on our holidays!
nostalgiahistoria67 2 years ago 3
This is pure magic. I am sure Dylan loves this version.

als ik dit nummer hoor, kan ik toch niet ontkennen,
dat er maar 1-tje dit nummer ten gehore kon brengen, en dat is Sandy Denny....
samen met Who knows where the time goes..
kan het niet missen...gevoel..sentiment...en tsja..
Sandy Denny, Knows where the time goes !
marius11031948 2 years ago
From Dylan this was a rant, from Sandy Denny it is a ballad.
It takes a lot of nerve to take a Dylan song down to its foundations and rebuild it stone by stone; but Sandy Denny can (and so could Hendrix).

Ian Matthews's voice in background sounds like an angel's voice.

The song as done by Dylan seemed insignificant. But Sandy Denny turns it into something amazing.
CroatAndNettles 3 years ago
/??? Dylan's version is the only way this song should be sung..it's rough and significant as can be.

One of my fav tunes by Fairport.I heard that Susanna Hoffs did a version.Great taste. All the female singers know Sandy.

Listen to Ian Matthews's voice souring over Sandy's on the chorus. Timeless.
