He seems very happy and excited for the poem...you have to have guts to just pick up yourself and read in front of everyone, apart from that, it seems a very well written poetry book in free verses and a good training for an English lover like me, a fan of Rock n Roll too. I'll probably buy it. Go Ryan.
@whateveritsnoyes I think you've hit the nail on the head there mate. The lines "staring blankly into screens", "unaware of how pretty it is to be out walking in all these amazing places" and "we always loved each other this much, before the screens went on" all seem to point towards it being about technology taking over, and our emotions being numbed by this 'unhappy voice' that seems to surround us now. We've forgotten how to live.
Incredible delivery. He reads it with such passion...it is infectious. So true how we can lose our identities and our relationships "when the screens go on."
i love the urgency of it and the accuracy of description, ryan is such a good observer..its written in one flow, like with a direct connection from his thoughts to the pen.. and it breaks my heart when he chokes a little reading "because we loved each other sooo much". he just wants to give to the world on any channel available - personally i am extremely thankful for ppl like ryan
@amphetaminesalts ironically he's talking about people like you. "amphetaminesalts" let me guess your name is referring to adderall? he even said, "everyone is on something". originality is lessening as time goes on and even when you think your original your not. your just following what you have categorized as "acceptable" or "cool". if you listened to the message you would know that. i mean dont get me wrong he covered quite a few topics but it makes sense even if some parts are abstract
Ryan reading his poems is actually better than Ryan singing his songs. It's undiluted, no pretense, and you can see him interacting with his thoughts, past and present.
And I wonder what it takes to interpret a classic listening pose as one of disinterest or dislike.
Wow I was there that night and I met him. I think I recorded him reading that same poem, but this is obviously much better quality. He impressed me, but Mary-Louise Parker, not so much. It's true that they are friends so it was easy for them to talk with each other, but she didn't seem so into it or anything. She looked like she had better things to do.
That's the impressive I get, or trying to seriously follow it. Or, she just feels really awkward. I always feel really awkward if one of my friends reads me a poem. I know they are friends.
this poem seems to be about people who use the internet and have nothing but negativity to bring to the table and believe that they are living a life when they're merely stuck looking at a white screen writing paragraphs specifically designed to make someone feel bad and/or critics in general who have nothing but negativity to bring to the table and dedicate their lives to tearing down something someone so lovingly built. foolish critics that think they are powerful when they are anything but.
He's a seriously good speaker, very passionate about his work... Suppose it is Ryan Adams after all!

I Love this....
I am wondering, however, what the chick on the right is doing? Is she mad, uncomfortable?

This is the worst trash ever. Seemed like 30 minutes of hell. Mary Louise-Parker looks angry at the camera at 2:47

i would also surmise that it could possibly be completely about ryan's relationship with his fans via the internet. it fits completely.
