This is the land that was once promised by the Mex. government to be theirs but now they want to take it back and probably use it for other things. No one in Mexico cares about this problem, thats the sad part. The Mexican Government is patrolling the areas where they live constantly burning down villages degrading them and leaving them with little to no resources to the point where they cant really live off their own crops. If the Zapatistas have a program of political action, it wasn't evident in this interview. At the risk of a foreigner telling Mexicans what's best for them, I'd suggest the Mexicans need a strong union movement together with a ruling party which will support unions and seize assets of foreign companies who threaten shutdowns in response to forced wage increases. Mexico needs a minimum wage similar to the U.S. $7.25/hr.

You are uneducated. The first revolution of 1910 was pretty much reversed in the 1930's becuase of the great depression then remained a one party system since then. The Zapatista's gain their name from Emeliano Zapata who was the leader of the Southern Army during that revolution, they pretty much wish for a modernized version of the exact same thing. Also the Zapatista's are pretty much in power in their occupied towns and are doing exactly what they promised. In conclusion: IDIOT

I love the idea of the Zapatista movement and would very much like to see the property and political rights of the indigenous people there be respected. Unfortunately, even if individual regions gain some autonomy, they still face poverty and drug related violence due to the surrounding states' local issues and the corruption of the larger federal government.
unfortunately "la autonomia" is practically impossible. someone always will lust for power more than others. it's just a water down version of communism or socialism. it sounds like a really good ideal on paper but in reality it will never be accomplished. the problem in mexico is not the goverment (or the type of gov), rather yet the corruption within. It is happening. The very fact that you agree with the movement shows that human beings are capable of moral reasoning. If you are capable of that, why do you suggest that it is not possible for more support to be gained for such movements. The key thing is for people to educate themselves as much as possible. State education only serves to blur reality in the favour of certain elite groups within society. Yes, there are some selfish individuals, but we moral beings outnumber them tenfold.

The Mexican govt. REALLY needs to fix this situation. They need to cooperate with these folks so they can get involved with industry & education and a better way of life for them and their kids. If the government wopn't do this they should be entitled to govern themselves and conduct their own affairs. a confederation unto themselves.
These guys need: 1. Schools 2. community colleges and a university. 3. Representation in the Mexican Government. 4. Get involved in industry and commerce. They need to demand that the Mexican Government help them develope their area so they can be self sufficient. They need a local govt. that can be trusted and an elected leader. and finally, go through a selection process for a police force.

At the risk of a foreigner telling Mexicans what's best for them, I'd suggest the Mexicans need a strong union movement together with a ruling party which will support unions and seize assets of foreign companies who threaten shutdowns in response to forced wage increases. Mexico needs a minimum wage similar to the U.S. $7.25/hr.

You are uneducated. The first revolution of 1910 was pretty much reversed in the 1930's becuase of the great depression then remained a one party system since then. The Zapatista's gain their name from Emeliano Zapata who was the leader of the Southern Army during that revolution, they pretty much wish for a modernized version of the exact same thing. Also the Zapatista's are pretty much in power in their occupied towns and are doing exactly what they promised. In conclusion: IDIOT

This is really interesting and helpful, because in my sociology class, we learned recently about social movements around the world and this was one of them. What I learned was that with Mexico signing on to NAFTA was what was the final push because the people would have to follow US regulations.

I love the idea of the Zapatista movement and would very much like to see the property and political rights of the indigenous people there be respected. Unfortunately, even if individual regions gain some autonomy, they still face poverty and drug related violence due to the surrounding states' local issues and the corruption of the larger federal government.

unfortunately "la autonomia" is practically impossible. someone always will lust for power more than others. it's just a water down version of communism or socialism. it sounds like a really good ideal on paper but in reality it will never be accomplished. the problem in mexico is not the goverment (or the type of gov), rather yet the corruption within. There's no balance and checks. I agree with the zapatistas, but i know it will never happen. sorry, just my 2 cents.

It is happening. The very fact that you agree with the movement shows that human beings are capable of moral reasoning. If you are capable of that, why do you suggest that it is not possible for more support to be gained for such movements. The key thing is for people to educate themselves as much as possible. State education only serves to blur reality in the favour of certain elite groups within society. Yes, there are some selfish individuals, but we moral beings outnumber them tenfold.

The Mexican govt. REALLY needs to fix this situation. They need to cooperate with these folks so they can get involved with industry & education and a better way of life for them and their kids. They need to demand that the Mexican Government help them develope their area so they can be self sufficient.
