@AJBiddle7 I chopped them into thick slices and froze them all. I had an insane amount of frozen carrots that lasted more than a year. I even had enough to toss to the dogs. They LOVE carrots. :)
@Praxxus55712 Oh yea they do! We used to have basset hounds, and if we weren't vigilant, they'd dig up and eat ALL our carrots! I would never have guessed they'd love CARROTS! Maybe you should have fed your dogs the icky ones and seen if they stil liked them ; )
have you considered trying lactid acid fermentation (think of sauerkraut)? It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it and if you have plenty of cold storage room it keeps good around 0 to 5 C.
@RGYOGI It's actually pretty easy to do. After picking like he just did, make sure you tear off the greens, and just put them tightly packed into a plastic pot, and fill with potting soil, you might want to water every few weeks or so. The important thing is the next spring to plant them out into the garden again. Do at least 6 or more if you plan on saving seeds for years and years. To see an example just look on youtube there's a great video.
My girlfriend and I were really enjoying this video but it keeps freezing up at 6:27. I know its not my computer. This has happened with other videos on youtube.
@screwmanx I let them duke it out. They seem to push each other apart enough to fatten up. I plant the seeds about average but probably a tad too close.
So, how long can you leave them in the ground? Also, you ever raise Narragansett turkeys? I am thinking about raising a few this spring..do you have a video on turkey raising..& last, do you remember when I asked you if you had a recipe for cream chicken enchiladas? I came up with a casserole to use up the left over turkey...& it was just like the enchiladas I remember! If you want the recipe let me know
@XoSkyrimOx Hydrate means to water something. If you mean dehydrate, I use a dehydrator. It uses low heat and a fan to remove moisture from food until the food is totally dry and hard. The food can be sttored for amazingly long periods of time this way...years and years.

@Praxxus55712 Yeah, we are a bunch of cabbage heads up here! At the 2009 AK State Fair a guy grew a 127 lb. cabbage! You could make a cult movie about a killer rolling cabbage (I mean, hey, they made a vampire movie supposedly taken in Pt. Barrow; it showed mountains and there are NO mountains in Barrow!), so a murderous cabbage running amuck shouldn't be a problem. Carrots; yeah, I think some more experimenting would be fun; how many times and how often can a carrot be pulled? A+ videos

Carrot Canundrum.........How come when I was living in the midwest U.S. the carrots at the grocery stores were from Canada? And when I came home to spend time in Canada I noticed that the carrots in the grocery stores in Canada were "Product of U.S.A."????? What's up with the carrot commodity ??? If Canadians grow carrots and America grows carrots.........why don't we each eat our own carrots ??? huh? huh? huh?
I love that you leave carrots for the mice....I thought I was the only one that fed the critters from the garden and dont mind them dining at my garden table.......bet the chickens love them too.......nice change of pace for them....friends of mine just threw carrot seeds into their raised beds and they came out mangled and twisted into each other like carrot 'brains'.....weird ! But, that's a Canadian border garden after all.....hahaha.
Always grow everything U can, in a bad year U might need all U can get. If you have extra give some to neighbors or a food bank, or even use it as animal feed. We might be having an economic collapse this year so grow extra for the debt slaves who will be paying all their income to the credit card company's.
i think you should consider getting a horse or donkey or a billy goat... or maybe a few bunnies? they can keep the weeds down and help you with those carrots!
You can dig your carrots up & keep them over winter in a pit or clamp with a layer of straw and soil on top, along with potatoes or in a box of sand in a shed or garage.
YourGardenShow, That wheelbarrow was less than half the harvest. I ate as many fresh as I could and froze the rest. It's almost April of the following year and I think I still have about 6 gallons of frozen carrots left in the freezer. Mostly I use them in soups, stew and stir fry dishes. They work tremedously well that way. Every now and then during the winter I'd thaw a gallon of them and feed them to the chickens as a treat. They really REALLY appreciated that. :)
The scary thing is that the packet said these carrots were only supposed to get 6 inches long. Also the experts say that adding alot of compost to carrot beds will cause them to fork and grow all whacky. I don't like badmouthing experts but the results of my carrots prove them wrong. I did learn a lesson not to grow so many carrots again though. :)
i actually left several carrots in my raised beds over one ny winter and they were fine and sweet. what kind of carrots were those? other than HUGE. totally relate to the very cute elderly barfing dog - my dogs have been running around in the snow and eating it and have come in several times in the last 2 days and done the same - only on the kitchen floor which one of us always manages to skate through in the dark - i love dogs they are just so much fun like living in an amusement park....
The longer your store them fresh/whole the sweeter they get. But if you can't store and them and you need options If you like carrot juice you can run then carrots through a juicer and freeze the juice for later. You can also freeze the pulp and use it for carrot cake, breads or soups.
bowmasterpigo13. I planted them in mid May and harvest them in early October. I think next spring I'm going to grow alot less of these Godzilla root crops. lol
Luckily I had enough freezer space.......barely. I'm gonna be eating frozen carrots until next carrot harvest! LOL That's cool though cuz I love carrots.
Deadset LEGEND! You're such a top bloke with great videos. I was 'wowing' at your carrots..baseball bats alright. lol. and your doggy throwing up on you..lol..
i`ve ordered a side car full of cow droppings mixed with straw (2tons), from nearby farm. plan is to unload it in 5-6 barrows for spring to cook into compost. hopefully, i`ll turn em over couple of times during winter, and praise to have compost ready in spring. i`m not ready for your fence-wire system for aeration. any advise on this Prax, please?
zasvedogovore, you have a monolithic amount of manure to compost. You can just pile it and let it cook. You don't need any wire fencing. I just use that to keep it together and keep the birds from jumping on it and throwing it all over the place. Turkeys and chickens LOVE to scratch at that stuff. One tip is to not pile it any higher than 4 feet when cooking it. The weight might compress it and keep air out. You're gonna have alot of compost! LOL
Carrot tip: blend carrot together with garlic and bits of lemon at desired size, place couple of parsley leaves, all together in a jar fill with oil and vinegar...serve chilled with your favorite dish
How do I feed my birds? FAST! They swarm me when I feed them, so I pour the feed into their bowls and pretty much get the heck outa there in a hurry. LOL
oops! I guess I read your question wrong. lol I feed them cracked corn once per day. That's it. They eat clover, insects, grass and berries from my yard and the surrounding woods. There's a lot for them to find in that area. I live on 80 acres of land. Clover is their favorite food though. :)
Good for you. Carrot stew, carrot cake, carrot pie, carrot juice, carrot in salads and soups etc. I planted carrots loooong ago and we're still waiting. I guess its time to pull them all up and move on. Our compost heap is coming on nicely though. How do I know when its done?
That's great Ray! I'm going to buy carrot seeds tomorrow and buy a planter to start my winter window indoor garden. I'm pretty psyched! I have halfway decent soil outside to use, should I add potting mix? Or skip it?
If you have good soil, you can skip the potting mix. Carrots indoors? That's so cool! I just planted lettuce, spinach and tomatoes last week inside. It's gonna be a salad kinda winter! wooohooo!!
I have read that compost will deform carrots. In my instance I have found that not to be true. I added mountains of compost and only pulled up around 12 deformed carrots out of 32 gallons. I would say that is a fantastic result which demonstrates that they do not deform due to my addition of compost. Weird, huh? :)
Benbutterell, my soil is extremely sandy. I add large amounts of compost to enrich the soil. It turns light sandy soil into fluffy fertile loam with multitudes of earthworms migrating from the surrounding forest. It's amazing for growing just about anything.

But, that's a Canadian border garden after all.....hahaha.

Always grow everything U can, in a bad year U might need all U can get. If you have extra give some to neighbors or a food bank, or even use it as animal feed. We might be having an economic collapse this year so grow extra for the debt slaves who will be paying all their income to the credit card company's.
astrialkil 1 year ago
i think you should consider getting a horse or donkey or a billy goat... or maybe a few bunnies? they can keep the weeds down and help you with those carrots!

You could sell the carrots to a store for money.

You can dig your carrots up & keep them over winter in a pit or clamp with a layer of straw and soil on top, along with potatoes or in a box of sand in a shed or garage.
fatturdburger 1 year ago
Beautiful looking carrots. Bet they're delicious. What did you end up doing with a wheelbarrow full of carrots?
YourGardenShow 1 year ago
YourGardenShow, That wheelbarrow was less than half the harvest. I ate as many fresh as I could and froze the rest. It's almost April of the following year and I think I still have about 6 gallons of frozen carrots left in the freezer. Mostly I use them in soups, stew and stir fry dishes. They work tremedously well that way. Every now and then during the winter I'd thaw a gallon of them and feed them to the chickens as a treat. They really REALLY appreciated that. :)

Hi,
i was talking to my co-worker today about your videos and this is another proof that you
don't need much to harvest great vegetables, i mean, look at this!
Ever wondered why the amish people have such good veggie produce, folks?
They are fine without the M*ns*nto stuff....
It's organic, it grows without anything!

Praxxus55712 2 years ago
i actually left several carrots in my raised beds over one ny winter and they were fine and sweet. what kind of carrots were those? other than HUGE. totally relate to the very cute elderly barfing dog - my dogs have been running around in the snow and eating it and have come in several times in the last 2 days and done the same - only on the kitchen floor which one of us always manages to skate through in the dark - i love dogs they are just so much fun like living in an amusement park....
swoop1111 2 years ago
I think they were scarlet nantes. The package said they'd only get around 6 inches long. oops! LOL
This year I'm going to grow the short stubby carrots. Less work to pull........plus nobody needs 32 gallons of ANYTHING! :)

Nice bunch of carrots!
The longer your store them fresh/whole the sweeter they get. But if you can't store and them and you need options If you like carrot juice you can run then carrots through a juicer and freeze the juice for later. You can also freeze the pulp and use it for carrot cake, breads or soups.
LoudBunch 2 years ago
I think you can store them in a box of plain yellow sand and keep them in a dark place.....

great show
i`ve ordered a side car full of cow droppings mixed with straw (2tons), from nearby farm. plan is to unload it in 5-6 barrows for spring to cook into compost. hopefully, i`ll turn em over couple of times during winter, and praise to have compost ready in spring. i`m not ready for your fence-wire system for aeration. any advise on this Prax, please?
zasvedogovore 2 years ago 3
zasvedogovore, you have a monolithic amount of manure to compost. LOL
Praxxus55712 2 years ago
Thank you man.
Carrot tip: blend carrot together with garlic and bits of lemon at desired size, place couple of parsley leaves, all together in a jar fill with oil and vinegar...serve chilled with your favorite dish
How do you feed the birds?
thank you for your patience
zasvedogovore 2 years ago 2
How do I feed my birds? FAST! They swarm me when I feed them, so I pour the feed into their bowls and pretty much get the heck outa there in a hurry. LOL
Praxxus55712 2 years ago
HAH!
I can imagine that run!
Actualiy, I meant "how you feed them" in term what you give them for food. (excepts yourself LOL)
Take care
zasvedogovore 2 years ago 2
oops! I guess I read your question wrong. lol I feed them cracked corn once per day. That's it. They eat clover, insects, grass and berries from my yard and the surrounding woods. There's a lot for them to find in that area. I live on 80 acres of land. Clover is their favorite food though. :)
Praxxus55712 2 years ago

Praxxus55712 2 years ago
Good for you. Carrot stew, carrot cake, carrot pie, carrot juice, carrot in salads and soups etc. I planted carrots loooong ago and we're still waiting. I guess its time to pull them all up and move on. Our compost heap is coming on nicely though. How do I know when its done?
brendinimas 2 years ago 2
A compost heap will stop heating up when it's done. Also the compost will be really dark and pretty much look like dirt.
Praxxus55712 2 years ago
Compost the tops - right?
Carrot sallad is good. Likw cole slaw, just add carrots and some raisins..Yum
What month did you plant them?
I need to do this!

cwaj, I planted them the 3rd week of May. All the tops get composted.

That's great Ray! I'm going to buy carrot seeds tomorrow and buy a planter to start my winter window indoor garden. I'm pretty psyched! I have halfway decent soil outside to use, should I add potting mix? Or skip it?
frozentootsiepop 2 years ago 2
If you have good soil, you can skip the potting mix. Carrots indoors? That's so cool! I just planted lettuce, spinach and tomatoes last week inside. It's gonna be a salad kinda winter! wooohooo!!
Praxxus55712 2 years ago
Just a tip to.... Compost is the enemy for carrots, its deforms them as you have shown in the last bit of the movie.
benbutterell 2 years ago 2
I have read that compost will deform carrots. In my instance I have found that not to be true. I added mountains of compost and only pulled up around 12 deformed carrots out of 32 gallons. I would say that is a fantastic result which demonstrates that they do not deform due to my addition of compost. Weird, huh? :)
Praxxus55712 2 years ago
Great Crop! I thought that sandy soil is best for carrots, the soil seems quite 'tough'.... You think otherwise?
benbutterell 2 years ago 2
Benbutterell, my soil is extremely sandy. I add large amounts of compost to enrich the soil. It turns light sandy soil into fluffy fertile loam with multitudes of earthworms migrating from the surrounding forest. It's amazing for growing just about anything.
