I do not want to sound so negative after what praise this movie has been given. I have seen the original which was a good movie. I then sat back today and watched this version. I mean it is ok, it is not a classic in my eyes.Not a bad movie and a great performance from the young girl in it. I just thought it was a tad over hyped in regard to it being this epic movie. As far as western movies of recent years go "Unforgiven" is a much better movie.

Just watched this film -- very enjoyable movie, but flawed. I am amazed that rotten tomatoes has this at a 96% average score. To me this just reflects the Coen brothers reputation, and it's an indication of how sheepish film critics can be. Great acting from the young girl, Hailee Steinfeld, and a typically smooth and sharp screenplay from the Coen brothers. That said, it was badly paced. All the action came at the end and it felt rushed. Good film though and well worth a watch.

I very much enjoyed how the film sped up and slowed down, it's a style that is reminiscient of Sergio Leone's old school westerns. I'm not criticizing you for your opinion or anything, I'm just putting my input in. Too be honest I prefered Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn over John Wayne... and tonnes of people will disagree with me there ^^

@TboneWillsone Seems like a fair assessment to me. I thought Jeff Bridges played the role very well. He gave an almost 'Dude-like' portrayal of Rooster; laid back, lethargic and almost indifferent to all that went on. I think a lot of what determines your preference of actor depends on what you grew up with... both very good actors.

It was a great movie that beat the original because of a few embellishments that weren't available when the original was made; such as the soundtrack and the gospel song Leaning on the Everlasting Arms. Also towards the end when Rooster was riding for help with the girl, the sunset off to their left was reminiscent of the Civil War motif and music by Ken Burns. It's things like that push a film into Academy Award territory.
