People want what they can't have. My guess is that the characters in Twilight have the traits the fans want. Since real people aren't good enough or meet their standards.
/Bellah has hardly any personality, thus she becomes the perfect surrogate for the reader's own personality. Since so much good happens to her without her making any effort, the reader wants to be Bellah.
/Edward is never really described in the books, thus making him another surrogate character, instead for what the reader finds physically attractive.
I have yet to find a good reason why the other fans like it :P
wait wait vampires sparkle and were wolfs come out during the day, fucking faggot sparkly vampires and were wolves that just should come out my verdict total gay at the highest faggot level im sorry if i offended any butt pirates
i swear black people are always complaining about race. black people are way more racist than any other out there in my opinion.
how about you, or some other black person, write a great book and make the characters black. i am mexican. if i wrote a book id make most of the characters mexican. if it was turned into a movie, id want most of the characters to be hispanic for sure.
As for the racist part of your video... if ANYTHING they actually ADDED people to make it NOT racist... Eric wasn't asian in the book but he was in the movie... they made a black human and also a black vampire... hello? Laurent was NOT black in the book. They said he had dark HAIR not SKIN. Sorry if you feel like it's racist, so WHAT? There are plenty of movies and books about ALL black people...so ... I don't get it?
TWILIGHT IS SO POPULAR BECAUSE IT'S FEMALE PORN. I READ A BOOK CALLED: DATEABLE. AND IN THIS BOOK THEY TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MALE PORN AND FEMALE PORN... WHILE MALES ARE MORE INTO THE PHYSICAL ASPECT, FEMALES ARE INTO THE MENTAL, EMOTIONAL ASPECT.
Now... I PERSONALLY love twilight because it's exactly like some people have stated... it's a love that will NEVER be... Edward is ALWAYS there for her when she needs him... except for New Moon, but he was only trying to protect her. (cont
For me, I actually saw New Moon first before reading the series or watching Twilight. It was so interesting I watched Twilight, then I read the series. So for me, the cast didn't ruin the characters in my head b/c I didn't have any characters in my head. :) It's so popular to me, b/c it's unlike any series or movie out there. I love reading about Edward and how well he fights temptation and his unique draw to Bella. I also love the wolves and the Cullen family. (cont).
The books make me laugh, cry, smile, and hold my breath. It's so real, but then again not. It's real in the way that guys have to fight temptation (but not against eating someone lol), and how Jacob and Edward both want Bella- there's jealousy in the world. Just everything is so good and it gives me a good feeling when I read the books. Plus, I want my own Edward Cullen. ;) I also feel that they picked the PERFECT cast for the movies. I can't imagine any actor/actress doing better.
Actually, I'm a girl. And...yeah, sometimes it's so dramatic (the movies at least) it seems like a soap opera, but it's the best series I've ever read. And that's a lot coming from a girl who used to despise vampires.
this movie is only so popular because of crazy ass teen fan girls...and some (boys)....the movies total shit,,bad acting bad character development halfass cgi graphics...i mean comon werewolfs are suppose to be scarier than those big dogs in the movie..and one last thing vampires dont glow in the light, they burn....if the writer wants vampires in the novel they should do some research like read bram stolkers dracular Or atleast watch his movie
Honestly, I'd be happy that there aren't alot of minorities represented. The books already shit all over the concept of female independence, goodness knows what the saga would do if the subject of race came up.
if you will read all the books in breaking dawn are very variate from irish to amazonian to egyptians so i don t think when stephanie wrote the books she thought ohh there will be no black people in this story
You asked why is it so popular. Well it is popular because for the time that you are reading or watching it you get to escape the same way most movies are popular. Why are there so few ppl of color in the movie? The area that the book is set in is not an area that doehas a wide variety of ppl of color. Would you be so upset if it was a movie that was set in a major city and had only one or two white ppl in it? I believe though that if you are going to judge something be fully informed.
and I believe that if you're going to explain why people like something such as this series you need more valid reasons then because people escape in movies...duh we know that genius. the dude was mostly asking what are people escaping to? why is this series so different then other movies? what makes this so special that millions of people want to watch it? that's what he was asking.
yeah he should be jealous. I mean he should know that girls want a pale, scrawny guy with a big head and doesn't know how to fix his hair type. I mean come on.
my answer:i like twilight because its just another one of those books that you just seem to feel comfortable with. you like picturing yourself in bellas position, and pretending its your own personal love story
maybe its the story reminds us all the crazy and impossible things that we really want to happen in a relationship but they are impossible. Every single girl (in her way) wants to hansome guy, popular, protective, mysterious or just interesting who loves her and protect her in every single way.
Ok....that its your opinion, ITS GREAT!! I olny wrote mine. But here is one important thing...NO EVRYONE LOOKS THE SAME THING. And of course in part its fake (vampire thing) , so it is a plus for the romantic story.... makin it a little bit different from others (OTHERS...not only you)...duh...
Yeah could you learn how to spell cuz honestly I'm having trouble understanding what your point is besides everyone is different. Of course everyone is different but there's usually similar reasons why people do things. Like most people smoke cigarettes because of nicotine. Get my point?
And with all that plus in the story are even more, the perfect boy is a vampire (but not anyone, a popular one), stong (even the guys, in the movie, show him some afraid), romantic, intelligent and unique; just different to the guys in now days. Its a dream or a fantasy come true for the ladies: show them something that no one have.
And maybe thats why most of the men hate it, not only for being a love story, Because it Reflects the perfect man (in some way) ... and shows them something men can never be, whatever they do ..: immortal Always young and of course a vampire. Which girl dont want to be unique and be loved for someone who will always love her and save her? Even die for her !!... .. And the book like the movie show us. Do not you think?
The Series of Twilight and the movie is pretty well romantic. I like Twilight because it's well like Romio and Juliet but a lot better. It's pretty awesome. I always like the book better than the movie. Oh well, I like romance and action so oh well. I guess a lot of other girls like it too so that's why I thought it's popular. No I'm not a girl or a emo!!! Just like to tell you.
i love the series and movie and i believe it is so popular because it is just a good love story and every girl fantasies about meeting their dream man like edward and stuff like that and it is just so real to some people!!!!=]
all i know is that i really love it and i am not emo!!!!<3
its about Mormon ideology and how women should submit and trust their men with unquestionable love
its completely obvious the books are about how a vampire initiates someone into the circle of death. hes constantly seducing her towards accepting to become the walking dead
just like all those idiots that don't truly understand harry potter its a dead give away that harry scare is the exact signia of the ss Hitlers youth. study Nazi occults
Have you been to Forks, WA? Its not the most diverse setting. It is diverse in its Quilute inhabitants and they play a primary role in the move. I suppose you would expect a movie that takes place in Jamaica to have an equal share of whites? and asians and hispanics? why be racist against the latino's and asians just because there ARE NONE THERE. Next time I make a movie about Vikings in the middle ages, I'll make sure my lead is an Incan from Peru, to please your rediculous idea of fairness.
it just so happens that the way stephanie meyer had it intended or described bella was white, edward was white, all of them were white, except for the werewolves. the way she portrayed them in the book, which you wouldn't know anyways becuase you didn't read it, was white, indian and oone black guy. you are making it racial.
tyler with the van is negro but they never really mention him in the book, so if you want to be racist then i think you should at least take the time to do you research sir instead of your half ass biased opion and if you don't like that.....then go watch blazing saddles where the lead men are black and white... seriously you want to talk black and white here is my question to you "civil war is over why are most of your black asses still in the south bitching about rascism"? so answer that.
Thats bull shit if you had even bothered to read the books before you said your racist remarks you would realize that half the charecters don't match between the movie and the book james doesn't have long hair first and formost, laurent is not even black carlisle is not even american,
I think twilight was a epic love story. Every generation needs one. It was also it had enough action to keep people reading the characters like the story was well devloped they where also flawed cause who wants a perfect irreallistic character It gives everyone something a litte differnt. I dont think race has to do with anything.I dont see what he means by we build up an image what because im black im supose to be dissapointed because the charaters arnt the same thats really judgemental of him.
I ran into this video, but this movie is definitely a teenie bopper trend type movie, most are probably 12-19 of age. I haven't heard any of my friends even mention any of the twilight series movies or books. But then we are all above 25.
Commenting as a girl's view mine's, I didn't put myself to be bella, just that, the words, the feelings are described very details, that you could easily imagine the scene. Talking the book, you could say it's a kind of temptation, some sort of mixture of realistic and fantasy love, that you easily feel it. I don't think there is racism at all, stephenie meyer put all kinds of people in like a tiny soceity. A different love situation, encounted dangers, which is like adventures.
When girls read the Twilight series, they picture themselves as Bella, no matter what.. and no matter who is reading the book, no matter what colour they are, they picture Bella the same colour as them.
For the movie, the reason why most of the characters are white isn't because of a specific reasoning, or a rasist reason. It's just that the people who auditioned were good and they picked them because of their skill, not what they looked like.
Personally I like the series because a) it's well written and b) it's going against the traditional way of seeing vampires as evil, bloodsucking fiends who have no emotions but the want for blood. Now I know that there are many other TV shows/movies/books that do not portray them as this, but when you think vampire do you see Dracula or a normal person like you and me? Before this I would have thought fangs and a castle, but the twilight saga pushes that away and I think that that's interesting.
ummm. i read the books first, and i will tell you exactly why they are so popular.
number 1. vampires are hot... duh.
number 2. every girl loves the idea of falling in love with the perfect guy, and stephanie meyer makes it so you can read it as if you were bella... which is the obvious lust of every female. number 3. why the heck do you care? curiousity got ya? well i will tell ya why then. i love the idea that the book gives me the hope of love.
I don't like the way he's talking about the movie... I saw the movie first and then I read the books and I still think that the movie is great. And I don't understand why he thinks it's racist movie. Stephenie Meyer describe the vampires as pale white and that's how they were shown in the movie.
And I like Twilight Saga, because when I'm reading those books I forget about all my problems and I'm just becoming a part of Twilight World... Besides the dialogues and the entire story is gorgeous !
opinion is racist, ivory skin is idiolized and thought to be pure. The vampires are thought to be civilized and the natives were potrayed as "savage" . also the volturi(vampire government) is filled with only white people. What are the other races unable to become vampires. jasper is a proud fighter for the confederate army during the civil war he was fighting to keep slavery in america. Is that racist? i think so
its popular cuz the preteen and teen girls thought edward was hot and shunned any girl who didnt like the books, ok not exactly shunned but if all your friends are talking about a character all the time you want in too. the context of the book in my
laurent wasn't bad in the first books. he was the one that warned them about the real baddie.and in the books she doesn't straight up say he was black. said he was olive-toned skin... i think in the casting there is subtle racism. but thats in most movies! most of the producers are white rich men. racism is still going strong... but i live in kansas where i met a kid once who kept a bat in his truck "for the coons." if he wasn't a minor i would of kicked his ass. i screamed at him instead
To answer your question, this book/movies series is so popular because its easy to identify with the character that the story is told through, Bella Swan. The story of a dangerous forbidden love is what draws us all to this story. The first movie couldn't even touch the book, but its always good to see how they turn out in the movie theater. Everyone reads them, not just one particular race, I even got my Hispanic roommate hooked on them. Its pure entertainment buddy. Its a new day and era
As an 21 African American female who has read the Twilight Saga twice, I am disappointed that the race issue was even bought up. First and foremost, you shouldn't judge a book based off of the movie that was made from it. Stephenie vividly describes the characters' physical appearance in the book and the majority of them are described to be white. That did not make me want to put the book down any faster because a direct representation of myself was not it.
I think there popular because it's a different kind of mainsteam love story that were used to, and the fact that the guys can get into the werewolves and vampires when they get bored with the lovey shit. The movie was ok, the acting was horrible and they took too long to say every word. New moon looks pretty good though!
I can't tell who u are replying to but if it's me let me say...i understand where you are coming from about filling in the racial blanks...but filling in the racial blanks with mostly (NOT ALL) whites for this movie was justified since it takes place in RURAL Washington...if someone wrote a book about prison and had all white people THAT WOULD BE RIDICULOUS!
But having diversity when IT'S CALLED FOR is what i am advocating...i don't know if i am articulating this right
Making movies independent movies is SIMPLE...if you go begging to a white producer maybe not
ANYWAYS
The town twilight is based in has barely ANY BLACK people...for you to ask them to put in more black characters when realistic that isn't the case...is just ridiculous to me
have u ever watched a movie and noticed lately they don't have black or latino criminals...and you kinda go uh-huh...take the show PRISON BREAK...barely any blacks...IT'S PRISON! Not to down our ppl but come on
Wow, you are so weak. You don't like people that don't include what you want in their movie. LOL. Get off your lazy ass and make a movie that will balance the scales to create your version of a "wonderfully integrated society". To pick yourself up from the despair of being a BLACK victim, try reading anything by Neale Donald Walsch. So sad that you are the example that many young black Americans are seeingyeah more victims to carry the message.
I'm sorry but I think you are turning the opinion of people around. You are making this a racial conflict when more than likely, the colored man in the picture is coincidentely in that position. How many movies have colored people in them anyway? A ratio of about 1:13. If they did not want a colored man in the movie, they wouldn't have put him in at all, nor a semi-main character. That is my opinion on your racial-created conflict.
I have read the Twilight books, and I did not enjoy them. But, as I was reading I realized that there were no people of color. No Asians, no Africans, no Hispanics. The only other race besides white and even whiter, was the natives. There also was not one person who had any facial blemishes or who was overweight or obese. Everyone was "perfect", except for Bella, of course. Because Bella is an ugly, ugly girl who's never gotten kissed, until she came to Forks, and then every guy wanted her.
wow what a laim and poinless video, yes twilight sucks but it's for 12 year old white girls not 50 year old bald ugly ass black men that talk like they're white. get over it you jealous turd.
wtf? twilight's awesome so i'd suggest to cut all the racial sh*t cuz stephanie meyers obviously did not mean to write her booksin that way. ur just a freakin bonehead who is looking for the lamest excuse to trash .yet again, another persons life, so shut the f up.
While I do understand that you are trying to prove a point and feel there needs to be more discussion, I feel you could do so in a more responsible way and by talking about topics (books/movies) that you know something about.
Also, you use the Vanity Fair photo as ammo. The fact that the African American is "hidden back there" proves nothing. Try taking an action shot of 12 people & get everyone to perfect position to face forward. Also, if we are talking about not being able to relate to a character when they are translated onto the screen, should I be offended that I cannot relate to the Native American characters that are a big part of the last 3 books?
You start by posing the question, "Why is Twilight so popular?" but then you go into a rant about race in Hollywood. First, your opening states "its time for the news". Any good news reporter would do their research. Read the books. See the movie. THEN report on the story..heck even give your opinion, but do so when you're informed. Also, if you want to get into an indepth discussion on race, be upfront. Don't attack a series you know nothing about & lure people in under false pretences
i think racial has nothing at all to do with it i would cut the b.s. if u want to no more about twilight read the books its not that hard thay attract u in and u just cant stop unless ur a strange lifeless weirdo there the best book ever and thats just it no racail shit thats not the purpose not everything is about that and stephine meyer didnt mean it in that way so i would back off ok ur coming on 2 strong and makin me and lots of others ill u want 2 no the deal wit it READ THE BOOK! cone head
i beleve ur the one with no life because i mean twilight is a wonderful book series and stepheine meyer is a wonderful series but u must be a heartlesss unromantic freak so i maen back off im a super fan sooooo leave twilight alone because they're many of us and u say it to the wrong person and u might b hurt and ps no im treatning im just warning
unfortunatly your wrong...people (mostly pre-teen and teen girls and the guys that think they can get some with them) are gonna see no matter what...the first one was a terrible movie, bad acting, bad directing, bad everything, but because it was Twilight it was such a hit...you just have to separate the ones who read the book and know what good movies are from the ones who only care that there is a new Twilight movie coming out, no matter how bad it is.
i think its so popular because it has like everything: romance, action, drama, some mystery even. it draws teenagers to it. and as for the cast being mostly white, the vampires are described as extremely pale-skinned because of the fact that theyre not truly living.
perhaps catherine hardwick wanted to have those characters
maybe if you are a little upset...email her about it
And I think that before you start to criticize twilight....read the books first, i think you would really enjoy them, they are so different from the films, so much better :))
Because I understand about living as a minority and I have learnt to accept and embrace it. And its not like I believe that its never going to happen. The world is changing, and its up to you if you're patient enough for these changes to come around.
I think one of the reasons why it is so popular is because of the young boy robert patterson which is slightly unfortunate for him. I also think it is popular because of the young cast and people still like to think this sense of danger and excitement is still possible.would you agree??
I have always been drawn to Vampire flicks, I believe a remake of the 'The Hunger' (say with an Iman and a Jennifer Connelly) done the right way would block-buster. Vampire flicks always tend to stress the sex angle which also sells. so this might be the amalgom of 'Friends/'Beverly Hills 90210 meets Interview with a Vampire. It all seems to be so formulaic to me... I'm still waiting for a remake of Blacula... William Marshall was so tight in that role...and what a voice.
Stepehnie Meyer writes like a teenage girl, so I suppose the books appeal on a personal level to that demographic. The movies don't have any black people because the movie was made to sell big, and historically advertisements and commercials feature white people because it's believed the product will be more appealing that way.
I come from a diverse racial family here in Singapore. I am personally offended that you would come up with conclusion about Hollywood having not enough Blacks.
In the first place, are we talking about Twilight or Hollywood, here?
Zennie, I'm confused. How did the question of "Why is the Twilight Saga being so popular?" being related to all these racism dispute. You asked a question, and we answered. And then suddenly, you're talking about the movie being cast with very few Blacks. More so, you're focusing on Blacks. You're not bothering to apply this same concept to other races. Yet, when we tell you that it is being cast as the way it is, you refuse to accept the answer.
no, vampires can be black, but I think that Stephanie Meyer would have had difficulty trying to pursue a vampire who is meant to be pale, if they are black. Remember, Stephanie was a new writer so maybe that race didnt go through her mint
Also, in the film, Laurent is black when he didnt have to be.
Adding white characters in order to make PAY DIRT is not the same as adding white characters for the sake of diversity...I know full and well that Spike Lee and many other black "mainstream"
entertainers...OPRAH being a main one...have to cater to white audiences...but i still feel adding diversity for THE SAKE OF DIVERSITY (not PAY DIRT) is a little annoying to me I never meant to upset you, but i get tired of blacks ASKING FOR WHITES INCLUDE US when we can make/produce our own shows
The actors cast in the movies are almost exactly who she described. The one main exception - Laurent wasn't black. Perhaps they did that to make people like you feel better and not feel like you have tto pull the race card? I am really happy with the choice they made to cast Edi as Laurent I just hope that is not one of the main reasons he was considered. I love him. And now, when I read the books, that is who I see.
I'm confused...did they say he wasn't black....or is that just the image in your head...because someone said Tyler(the kid who almost ran Bella over with his truck) wasn't black....but when i was listening to the audio book it never described RACE...only hair color, paleness of skin(which isn't just unique to ONLY white race) and body type...Jacob and the wolf tribe being the exception
The story is written from the 1st person perspective and mostly Bella's, which is one reason why mainly women love the saga and maybe one reason why people connect so personally with it. Reading this story is trully like falling in love. Stephanie Meyer is very descriptive and detailed in her writing. She doesn't really leave room for your imaginatin to visualize your own characters. She describes almost every inch of every character. And guess what?
Many people - obviously- have connected with this story in a very personal way. Everyone seems to be able to connect with one of the characters (regardless of their race). Bella - the protaganist of the story - is a girl who is not popular, someone who makes good choices and has a beautiful heart and i think many young girls easily identify with her. And even older women do because they used to be her.
At first, I was thinking... valid question, i get it all the time. And then you had me thinking... wow! This guy's really got an issue. the race card? really? I thought your question was 'why is the twilight saga so popular'? Not an easy answer, which is why most will answer with "you just have to read the books". The twilight saga is so popular for many reasons. It is a love story... a star crossed lovers- not a tragedy but always coming close- just beautifully written and profound love story.
Why does it have to be someone BLACK?? Why not someone Asian, or Hispanic, or Indian or any other of the millions of cultures out there?? YOU saying focus on someone BLACK is racist!!
As I am not female, nor a teen or tween and therefore have no interest in this film.
The storyline is contrived and formulaic. It takes no risks and capitalizes on teenage angst and the hormonal fantasies of its primary market.
And in response to the predictable retorts, I am neither impressed by action films that spew out nonsensical violence and inane catch phrases that the screenwriters attempt to pass off as wit or actual dialogue.
Its not racist it just the best actor. She wrote good books and just picks the best actor. I like it because it just well captivating u can't get enough of it. But its not a white persons point of view its just her point i mean i couls have been any actor but they get the best actor for it. I can see it and im 12
im just saying because the slightest thing that can relate to racistism people will throw out the race card saying "THATS RACIST!" and this s coming from a Mexican who is discriminated every day
dont get ur point in this honestly.. u have to see something to believe it right?
well read it and see why it's so popular i didnt no why it was and i read all 4 books.. its just hw stephanie meyer writes it and betrays the characters and the whole story line is wonderful and when u read one u have to read the other one because thats what it is like exciting too read and u just want to read more and more.. ur not guna get no were asking ppl there guna give u the same answer sorry buddy
Twilight is popular because of the whole vampire concept and because of how attractive the actors/actresses are which makes me sad. The series was actually pretty good Also, I never thought of the book/movies having a racial issue. I mean Meyer is white, the dream probably depicted that of her younger self falling in love with another white character, which entails his family to be white also. There is nothing racist about it, it's just common sense
If you have actually read the twilight saga, The vampires are all explained to have very pale skin because the way no blood has actually flowed in their veins for a hundred years. Bella is described to have very pale skin because she says that her mother is part albino, someone who is white. Jacob and the other Quilluette characters all have dark indian type skin. The Twilight Saga is not racist at all so dont even add that comment in.
PLUS as you will see in the next movie, it will focus primarily on Native americans and their history and culture. Is that good enough because they are not black??
Are you kidding?? Did you watch the movie? There were plenty of diverse characters in the school..and the vampires are from the 18th century. why are you making this into a racial issue? Did anyone kick up a stink about Interview with the Vampire having all white actors? Get over it! I LOVE the books and the movie and I am hispanic and see a great story not "hey where are the black sna hispanics at?"
are you kidding me...Taylor Launter is a main character not to mention most of the wolf tribe are protrayed by LATIN actors(even though latin/ hispanic isn't a race but an ethnic group made of MANY seperate races)...
I think that The Twilight Saga is popular because of the whole star-crossed lovers thing. Two completely different people and the restrain he has to control. He has smelt the sweetest blood in her and he wants to kill her for that, yet he still loves her so much. The vampire portrayed in the book have been perceived in many women's opinion as the epitome of a perfect gentleman and he's described with an ideal physique. And then plus, there's also the war between mythological creatures going on.
I can honestly say it has nothing to do with the racial thing. Like you said yourself already, Stephenie Meyer got this idea from a DREAM. It was just a dream about a young couple talking about their complicated relationship. I have advised many people to read the books. Like most book to movie adaptations, the books are better at portraying the characters both on how they look like and everything on about the characters themselves. Did you know that in the books, Laurent is actually French?
I can't tell you about the racism since all that I have to judge it by are a few photographs and video clips. I've avoided the series because I've outgrown this sort of teenage angsty thing, a soap opera wrapped up in a supernatural bow. Maybe it is more than that, but that is all that the trailers communicate to me.
i don't care for it...but saying that i will probably go see NEW MOON since they got a new director
also i being BLACK don't really care if they don't have black characters...you wouldn't ask Spike Lee to put more white people in his movie
Now Zennie i understand where you are coming from, but be REALISTIC...the story takes place in a rural part of Washington...that state has barely any black people as is...to place an excessive amount of diversity will seemed forced and UNREALISTIC
Don't be ridiculous. Nothing racist about it. It's set in a small town in Washington, most of the people there would be white. Get the chip off your shoulder.
Teenage girls like it, I think that is the bulk of who likes the series. The reason they like it is because it is about an every day girl (like them) who gets with a dangerous man/vampire who wants to protect her, and who has exciting adventures. It is just a silly fantasy, like a romance novel for younger kids.
I have alot of friends that like this series , I don't , but they tend to like it because of the romance , "hot characters" etc. It would be nicers if these films had a varity of race , just so everyone regardless of race - if they like the film , can picture themselves in it :S.
Also, take a look at the character to the right of the african-american character... His face is completely covered by a hand...I mean why not point that out.. Maybe Stephanie doesn't like people with mohawks?
My point = Why make a fus about everything? Life is too short.
I think that these books are so popular because they tell the story of a love that can't be. I think it's so popular because most girls love romance stories, so when one reads it, she tells all of her friends how amazing it is and all that stuff. I'm not saying that only girls like it. There are some guys out there who like it as well. These are well-written books, and its a very interesting concept for a story, so natural curiosity will attract quite a few people as well. Hope that helped. =]

It's simple really:

/Edward is never really described in the books, thus making him another surrogate character, instead for what the reader finds physically attractive.
I have yet to find a good reason why the other fans like it :P

i will only comment on your "race" point.
i swear black people are always complaining about race. black people are way more racist than any other out there in my opinion.

(cont
peacefor420 1 year ago
For me, I actually saw New Moon first before reading the series or watching Twilight. It was so interesting I watched Twilight, then I read the series. So for me, the cast didn't ruin the characters in my head b/c I didn't have any characters in my head. :) It's so popular to me, b/c it's unlike any series or movie out there. I love reading about Edward and how well he fights temptation and his unique draw to Bella. I also love the wolves and the Cullen family. (cont).
Coyotalia 2 years ago
The books make me laugh, cry, smile, and hold my breath. It's so real, but then again not. It's real in the way that guys have to fight temptation (but not against eating someone lol), and how Jacob and Edward both want Bella- there's jealousy in the world. Just everything is so good and it gives me a good feeling when I read the books. Plus, I want my own Edward Cullen. ;) I also feel that they picked the PERFECT cast for the movies. I can't imagine any actor/actress doing better.

Yes and I'm sure your a guy? no this is like someone ripped off one of the people on opera and took their story.
nirvanaenlightenment 1 year ago
Actually, I'm a girl. And...yeah, sometimes it's so dramatic (the movies at least) it seems like a soap opera, but it's the best series I've ever read. And that's a lot coming from a girl who used to despise vampires.
Coyotalia 1 year ago
this movie is only so popular because of crazy ass teen fan girls...and some (boys)....the movies total shit,,bad acting bad character development halfass cgi graphics...i mean comon werewolfs are suppose to be scarier than those big dogs in the movie..and one last thing vampires dont glow in the light, they burn....if the writer wants vampires in the novel they should do some research like read bram stolkers dracular Or atleast watch his movie

Honestly, I'd be happy that there aren't alot of minorities represented. The books already shit all over the concept of female independence, goodness knows what the saga would do if the subject of race came up.

CHRISTINE4J 2 years ago
You asked why is it so popular. Well it is popular because for the time that you are reading or watching it you get to escape the same way most movies are popular. Why are there so few ppl of color in the movie? The area that the book is set in is not an area that doehas a wide variety of ppl of color. Would you be so upset if it was a movie that was set in a major city and had only one or two white ppl in it? I believe though that if you are going to judge something be fully informed.
MsWillowbayOrelse 2 years ago
and I believe that if you're going to explain why people like something such as this series you need more valid reasons then because people escape in movies...duh we know that genius. the dude was mostly asking what are people escaping to? why is this series so different then other movies? what makes this so special that millions of people want to watch it? that's what he was asking.

maybe its the story reminds us all the crazy and impossible things that we really want to happen in a relationship but they are impossible.

Zarinan 2 years ago
Yeah could you learn how to spell cuz honestly I'm having trouble understanding what your point is besides everyone is different. Of course everyone is different but there's usually similar reasons why people do things. Like most people smoke cigarettes because of nicotine. Get my point?

no....not really-------

And with all that plus in the story are even more, the perfect boy is a vampire (but not anyone, a popular one), stong (even the guys, in the movie, show him some afraid), romantic, intelligent and unique; just different to the guys in now days. Its a dream or a fantasy come true for the ladies: show them something that no one have.
Zarinan 2 years ago
And maybe thats why most of the men hate it, not only for being a love story, Because it Reflects the perfect man (in some way) ... and shows them something men can never be, whatever they do ..: immortal Always young and of course a vampire. Which girl dont want to be unique and be loved for someone who will always love her and save her? Even die for her !!... .. And the book like the movie show us. Do not you think?

its about Mormon ideology and how women should submit and trust their men with unquestionable love
its completely obvious the books are about how a vampire initiates someone into the circle of death. hes constantly seducing her towards accepting to become the walking dead

A different love situation, encounted dangers, which is like adventures.
nalla011 2 years ago
When girls read the Twilight series, they picture themselves as Bella, no matter what.. and no matter who is reading the book, no matter what colour they are, they picture Bella the same colour as them.
For the movie, the reason why most of the characters are white isn't because of a specific reasoning, or a rasist reason. It's just that the people who auditioned were good and they picked them because of their skill, not what they looked like.

Plus, the concept of a vegetarian vampire falling in love with a human is something I never would have thought of.
simmaniac94 2 years ago
Personally I like the series because a) it's well written and b) it's going against the traditional way of seeing vampires as evil, bloodsucking fiends who have no emotions but the want for blood. Now I know that there are many other TV shows/movies/books that do not portray them as this, but when you think vampire do you see Dracula or a normal person like you and me? Before this I would have thought fangs and a castle, but the twilight saga pushes that away and I think that that's interesting.
simmaniac94 2 years ago
ummm. i read the books first, and i will tell you exactly why they are so popular.
number 1. vampires are hot... duh.
number 2. every girl loves the idea of falling in love with the perfect guy, and stephanie meyer makes it so you can read it as if you were bella... which is the obvious lust of every female. number 3. why the heck do you care? curiousity got ya? well i will tell ya why then. i love the idea that the book gives me the hope of love.

Besides the dialogues and the entire story is gorgeous !

opinion is racist, ivory skin is idiolized and thought to be pure. laurent wasn't bad in the first books. he was the one that warned them about the real baddie.and in the books she doesn't straight up say he was black. said he was olive-toned skin... i think in the casting there is subtle racism. but thats in most movies! most of the producers are white rich men. racism is still going strong... but i live in kansas where i met a kid once who kept a bat in his truck "for the coons." if he wasn't a minor i would of kicked his ass. i screamed at him instead

Its a new day and era
daleesia 2 years ago
As an 21 African American female who has read the Twilight Saga twice, I am disappointed that the race issue was even bought up. First and foremost, you shouldn't judge a book based off of the movie that was made from it. Stephenie vividly describes the characters' physical appearance in the book and the majority of them are described to be white. That did not make me want to put the book down any faster because a direct representation of myself was not it.
daleesia 2 years ago

DouglasLee777 2 years ago

While I do understand that you are trying to prove a point and feel there needs to be more discussion, I feel you could do so in a more responsible way and by talking about topics (books/movies) that you know something about.
neiner97 2 years ago
Also, you use the Vanity Fair photo as ammo. The fact that the African American is "hidden back there" proves nothing. Try taking an action shot of 12 people & get everyone to perfect position to face forward. Also, if we are talking about not being able to relate to a character when they are translated onto the screen, should I be offended that I cannot relate to the Native American characters that are a big part of the last 3 books?
neiner97 2 years ago
You start by posing the question, "Why is Twilight so popular?" but then you go into a rant about race in Hollywood. First, your opening states "its time for the news". Any good news reporter would do their research. Read the books. See the movie. THEN report on the story..heck even give your opinion, but do so when you're informed. Also, if you want to get into an indepth discussion on race, be upfront. Don't attack a series you know nothing about & lure people in under false pretences

The movies don't have any black people because the movie was made to sell big, and historically advertisements and commercials feature white people because it's believed the product will be more appealing that way.

aishah849 2 years ago
Zennie, I'm confused. How did the question of "Why is the Twilight Saga being so popular?" being related to all these racism dispute. You asked a question, and we answered. And then suddenly, you're talking about the movie being cast with very few Blacks. More so, you're focusing on Blacks. You're not bothering to apply this same concept to other races. Yet, when we tell you that it is being cast as the way it is, you refuse to accept the answer.
aishah849 2 years ago
no, vampires can be black, but I think that Stephanie Meyer would have had difficulty trying to pursue a vampire who is meant to be pale, if they are black. Remember, Stephanie was a new writer so maybe that race didnt go through her mint
Also, in the film, Laurent is black when he didnt have to be.

Adding white characters in order to make PAY DIRT is not the same as adding white characters for the sake of diversity...I know full and well that Spike Lee and many other black "mainstream"
entertainers...OPRAH being a main one...have to cater to white audiences...but i still feel adding diversity for THE SAKE OF DIVERSITY (not PAY DIRT) is a little annoying to me I never meant to upset you, but i get tired of blacks ASKING FOR WHITES INCLUDE US when we can make/produce our own shows
sexfanatic 2 years ago
The actors cast in the movies are almost exactly who she described. The one main exception - Laurent wasn't black. Perhaps they did that to make people like you feel better and not feel like you have tto pull the race card? I am really happy with the choice they made to cast Edi as Laurent I just hope that is not one of the main reasons he was considered. I love him. And now, when I read the books, that is who I see.
DanaBear27 2 years ago
I'm confused...did they say he wasn't black....or is that just the image in your head...because someone said Tyler(the kid who almost ran Bella over with his truck) wasn't black....but when i was listening to the audio book it never described RACE...only hair color, paleness of skin(which isn't just unique to ONLY white race) and body type...Jacob and the wolf tribe being the exception
sexfanatic 2 years ago
The story is written from the 1st person perspective and mostly Bella's, which is one reason why mainly women love the saga and maybe one reason why people connect so personally with it. Reading this story is trully like falling in love. Stephanie Meyer is very descriptive and detailed in her writing. She doesn't really leave room for your imaginatin to visualize your own characters. She describes almost every inch of every character. And guess what?
DanaBear27 2 years ago
Many people - obviously- have connected with this story in a very personal way. Everyone seems to be able to connect with one of the characters (regardless of their race). Bella - the protaganist of the story - is a girl who is not popular, someone who makes good choices and has a beautiful heart and i think many young girls easily identify with her. And even older women do because they used to be her.
DanaBear27 2 years ago
At first, I was thinking... valid question, i get it all the time. And then you had me thinking... wow! This guy's really got an issue. the race card? really? I thought your question was 'why is the twilight saga so popular'? Not an easy answer, which is why most will answer with "you just have to read the books". The twilight saga is so popular for many reasons. It is a love story... a star crossed lovers- not a tragedy but always coming close- just beautifully written and profound love story.
DanaBear27 2 years ago

As I am not female, nor a teen or tween and therefore have no interest in this film.
The storyline is contrived and formulaic. It takes no risks and capitalizes on teenage angst and the hormonal fantasies of its primary market.
And in response to the predictable retorts, I am neither impressed by action films that spew out nonsensical violence and inane catch phrases that the screenwriters attempt to pass off as wit or actual dialogue.

Charshersharmzz 2 years ago
If you have actually read the twilight saga, The vampires are all explained to have very pale skin because the way no blood has actually flowed in their veins for a hundred years. Bella is described to have very pale skin because she says that her mother is part albino, someone who is white. Jacob and the other Quilluette characters all have dark indian type skin. The Twilight Saga is not racist at all so dont even add that comment in.
Hopefully you see my point

Are you kidding?? Did you watch the movie? There were plenty of diverse characters in the school..and the vampires are from the 18th century. why are you making this into a racial issue? Did anyone kick up a stink about Interview with the Vampire having all white actors? Get over it! I LOVE the books and the movie and I am hispanic and see a great story not "hey where are the black sna hispanics at?"

Now Zennie i understand where you are coming from, but be REALISTIC...the story takes place in a rural part of Washington...that state has barely any black people as is...to place an excessive amount of diversity will seemed forced and UNREALISTIC

people call everything racist these days
