Quite easily...by hearing the song for the first time through the medium of somebody-else's cover. There are plenty of them here on YT and most of them have not learned it by listening to Pipedream.
That is why I asked the question in the first place.
@Gangly1 Yes, I have heard the original. I love it. My first exposure to this song was actually Ben Gibbard's cover of it, which is also pretty great. I have a feeling a lot of people who are around my age hear Gibbard's cover of it first. Actually, when I first posted this video (wow it's almost been two years now), I thought Gibbard was the original artist, and when I found out he wasn't, I quickly changed the title.
I love this version of one of Alan Hull's best songs.
This young lady has got some other great songs on Youtube, but I keep coming back to listen to this because it's the kind of honest, no-nonsense music that I'm sure if he were still around, he would approve of, excellent stuff!
dazcoo01- thanks for responding to my comments, if you ever get around to doing an album, preferably of Alan Hull/Lindisfarne songs (which I think would be great) please put me down for an advance copy!
How wonderful to see such a young person recording a lovely version of an Alan Hull song, I'm even a little bit surprised that she knew of this song from his first solo album, I'm a lifelong fan and I bet he would be really pleased if he was still around, to see this. very well done Miss, thanks.
Nice to see that Alan Hull's talent has spread wings.
Have you listened to the original?
I would be interested to know.
Well done.

Thanks for your honesty.
Alan Hull deserves people like you; that keep his music alive
Now have a look at The Ukulele Orchestra Of Great Britain here on YT.
They keep the Uke alive in a very special way!
Keep well and stay safe,
