you guys need a reality check. scientists have proven that the electromagnetic energy (what could be your "soul") leaves the body a few minutes after death. it does not "stick with the body because it loved it". that doesn't even make sense! what the family wishes to do with a body (cremation vs. burial) has no affect on where the soul goes, because the soul is gone long before any ceremony takes place. ceremonies are more about closure for the families. Over here a family member is allowed to witness the actual cremation through a small peep hole although most people decline the offer but they do allow one person to watch it if they so wish. No coffin is used in this case which is probably better, that way you can be assured that the ashes are mostly of the person. I don't see this as being any different to watching someone being lowered into the ground.

The burning cerimony is a faster realisation that the person is not the body.Placing a body under the ground gives the illusion that the person is, in fact, " sleeping there".
