Its the red tape and environmental regulations that make it very costly and long (impossible) to extract and refine those resources. Environmental groups would no doubt be agitated. They were already screaming when the extraction is done in Canada, what do you think will happen in the US?

The Harper govt. has changed its opinion because it won a majority during the last election and did not have to compromise with the other parties. As far as economic issues are concerned, Canada needs to protect itself from the fluctuations of the US economy since it trades most of its natural resources with the US making them and their economy at the whim of the changes that happen here.

@pf540 unfortunately, we ship the crude oil to the US to be refined and then have to buy it back as fuel. Talk to Harper about building more refineries in Canada so we actually do not have to depend on another entity to do it for us and of course, always at a cost.

The only country I feel we should be trading oil with, is Saudi Arabia... They have the highest oil amount in the world. They have 267 billions barrells compared to Canada's 179 billions barrells. This is signifcantly larger and as a country, both sides would profit from this because they know they would pay eachother back. Its the red tape and environmental regulations that make it very costly and long (impossible) to extract and refine those resources. Environmental groups would no doubt be agitated. They were already screaming when the extraction is done in Canada, what do you think will happen in the US?

The Harper govt. has changed its opinion because it won a majority during the last election and did not have to compromise with the other parties. As far as economic issues are concerned, Canada needs to protect itself from the fluctuations of the US economy since it trades most of its natural resources with the US making them and their economy at the whim of the changes that happen here.

Harper's power base is in Alberta. He and his party are tied to oil to such a degree that he might as well be a board member of the Canadian Oil Companies. BTW, most of the Oil industry in Canada is AMERICAN owned (Well, Shell & BP too). So, if you have a problem with who Canada is selling oil to; contact Exxon/Mobile etc...
