damn, I'm headed to Deal's Gap/Tail of the Dragon Sunday. Hope nothing like that happens while I'm riding it!! My poor Busa might get scratched... that would be heart breaking
I go back and forth between Nashville and Franklin, NC. going south to Dalton and then to Ellijay is the better route. The way tha TN DOT want you to go is 2 hours out of the way, The road over Fort MTN is mush better the US 129. Motorcycle run that route and they some thing cross lines. They have at least 5 people have died there this year
I was on my way from Cherokee to Chattanooga and ran into this. I went 68 South to Elijay and over to Dalton then took 75N to get to Chattanooga. Was a nice drive (long) but there were some beautiful towns I would never had seen.
Sucks for everyone who lives there, and thank God no one got hurt, but damn if I could stop laughing when he said, "the mountain has came off.." in such a monotone voice.
I drive through this gorge twice a month.... I might just try going from Ducktown to Tellico Plains, Tn instead... Probably be a while before they are able to reopen road. I hope they inspect and possible remove other nearby hazards. There are two very sharp and dangerous curves where if you meet a long truck trailer coming from the opposite direction, they usually cross over the centerline, and the curves are completely blind with a rock wall on one side, and the river on the other.
probably shorter, i have been that way but the trip over Fort Mtn between Ellijay and Chatsworth is slow and curvy like US 129 along the Little Tennessee River -aka Dragons Tail- I almost get car sick driving those two roads-LOL
I drove down that road one time seriously scary road.

From my personal experience, it's the people in cars and trucks that cross the center lines mostly.

Will Federal Highway funds (taxpayer $) go to cleaning this up?

I'd assume so. This is U.S. Hwy 64.

Thank God they were able to get everyone out of the way! That slide would have easily pushed the jackhammer-crane into the Gorge.
