Fantastic song!! When it was released it was way ahead of it's time, and treated with a bit of suspicion! Listen to this guy's diction - every word in his songs is so clear. What a singer - absolutely in a class of his own!
would someone be so kind as to help me? im just getting into scott walker and id like to purchase a album of his. i was wondering...which album would be the best introduction to his work?
I never thought I would hear this one again. Wonderful song! There are so many words that you have to keep listening hard to keep up with the story. Thanx for the lyrics. This song is way way before it's time and completely brilliant. Thanx for posting.
I am a new zealander and our radio stations never played this! Only when our pirate station started did this get airtime! Radio Hauraki changed everything!
het is en blijft een kei van een nummer, ook al heet ik ook jacky, het nummer blijft in m'n geheugen gegrift staan, en wat een tekst, chapeau Scott ik blijf er van genieten
When I first heard this I didn't like it - I was far too young to appreciate the funny, clever, witty and sheer damn artistry of the wonderful lyrics (how DID they get away with them at the time ... opium, bordellos, queers!!). And of course SW will probably never be surpassed at this. It is so VERY difficult to bring off technically cos it needs a voice which is both strong and agile, almost operatic in quality. Ahhh..... wish I could go back in time to hear him do it live ....
WOW. There are great tunes and GREAT TUNES!!! It's like a magic spell where everything comes together perfectly. The words, the voice, the intonation and the orchestration. How lucky are we?
i remember hearing this on radio 2 several years ago, i frantically ran around looking for a pen and paper then sprinted to hmv and got the cd, played it everyday for three months, jackie, omg how i love this song and love love love scott walker!
I remember when the BBC banned this song, and I was angry. It was years before I finally got a copy from eBay, and now I find it here. It's great! Scott - one of the members of the Walker Bros. was phenomenal but more popular in England than America
LOVE JACQUES, LOVE JACKIE, LOVE MARC (ALMOND - OF COURSE), LOVE REVOLUTION MASTERPIECES, LOVE THE BIG MUSICAL SOUNDS, LOVE, SEA-SHANTY, LOVE 'GIRLS FROM THE STREET' AND 'THE ROPE AND THE COLT', BY SCOTT. ALSO LOVE THE INTENSITY OF THE MAN HIMSELF, JACQUES BREL, LOVE YOU JACQUES. GOING NOW TO SOURCE, THE ALBUM OR CD, 'FISH HEADS AND TAILS', I THINK IT WAS CALLED, BY THE SCOTISH BAND, 'GOODBYE MR MCKENZIE'.
Two lyrical errors-- bad on you for POSTING lyrics but posting them WRONG! It's not "Juniper" (which makes no sense at all, come on) but "Jupiter" (beard so very long and flowing) and it's "social world" not "social 'whirl'" (what the heck is a "social whirl"?). If I am going to perform this song for New Year's Eve karaoke this year I NEED to be rehearsing the RIGHT LYRICS, MAN! Wshew!
@Kirby444 You are wrong -- "Juniper" and "whirl" are both correct. Check the original French by Jacques Brel... Do your homework before lashing out on the person who posted this.
The orchestral arrangement on this version is killer (I note that Almond largely copied it on his more recent version). How I long to hear a great record like this nowadays. :-)
Whoa...It's funny, camp and brilliant, all at the same! But 1967? And he got away with those lyrics...? WOW. But man, what a voice~ I love 'No Regrets' as well~ but this is so different! Thanks for the lyrics, as well as the upload. Top job. ^^
@DanBlabbers OK DAN' I DON'T KNOW WHY I CAN COMMENT HERE, MAYBE I MUST CHECK YOUTUBE REGULATIONS. THIS IS MY FIRST TIME EXPERIENCE OF THIS HAPPENING, TBC.
He has clearly ripped off the Last Shadow Puppets here, shameful.
