You make so much more sense than most other horse-sense people I know. I'm this way with dogs, I can just see what people are doing to cause every negative behavior. I never have to use whips or pain to turn a "bad" dog, its all about approach, presence, and understanding the reactions and interactions between the animal, other animals, and people.
Its very rare that I meet a truly mean natured dog, just the same as you rarely see a truly mean natured horse. Wish we could do more.
I remember a horse like this... His name was Pinokkio and he was standing at a ridingschool... He'd always threaten and snap at people trying to get him out for his lessons, at some point I got so annoyed of having to get the owner and see him walk in without a problem I did as well and I, out of pure reaction, bitchslapped the horse on his face as it got to me. Never had any problem with him anymore, ever and he wasn't affraid of me either. Just reassured I'd defend my space.
Yeah bull crap. Petro,$50000 Stallion Paso Fino. Beat in the head by his "trainer" as a foal with a baseball bat. Kept in a dark stall, much worse than this. He got his food thrown at him and people RAN past his stall because he would full out charge. Lisa got him for free, put him in a stall to expose him to people that didn't run from him and other horses. Just a year now, that very horse is out with geldings in a pasture and you can walk up and kiss him on the nose. They were gonna kill him.
How would You deal with a horse that is (for want of a better term) freaking out in its stall, if you need it to stop imediately and you can't get in the stall with it because the situation is too dangerous and cramped?
The stall should be a home, a place of refuge, a shelter...and not a prison cell. No horse should ever be kept locked in a stall except for bedding down for the night. Any person who would trap his horse in a stall all the time should not be allowed to own horses.
I honestly love all of your videos. you dont baby everything. your very straight forward. and i have learned somethings already. I have an aggressive horse. i always just thought she was just mean and just being a mare. well now i realize it was ME! i have let her push me away. if she pinned her ears back i would stop what i was doing and say "okay im sorry" am i an idiot? the past week i have been working on gettin HER to move. and your videos are a great help! thank you!
2 of my horses DO love their stalls. But they are never in for more than 4-6 hours a day. If I left them in for extended periods they would no longer enjoy it. Stalls have a place, but too many people are brainwashed that they are superior and horses get safely filed away in them. Pretty sad.
They were some miserable horses. The stalls had every conceivable horse toy you could think of and most them did play with them, but given a choice these horses would've been happier outside.
was the norm for these horses as soon as you opened the stall door.I didn't back away and over time all the stallions figured out I wouldn't go away ,Oh I did get bit a few times in the ass when I'd let my guard down.Owner told me that if I had to defend myself to just do it.I only had to pop them once in awhile to get my point across.
I once worked at an Arabian horse breeding/boarding barn.I worked with 8 breeding stallions that only came out their stalls to do ground work or breeding.I'll tell you this it was a challenge to clean their stalls with them in there.I had one eye on them and one eye on what I was doing the whole time.I was the only one that could deal with them.Rearing up/biting/pinning ears
You see this all of the time at my barn. It's amazing when I walk around with my horse watching which horses will pin their ears and charge at you, which ones ignore us, and which ones stick their noses out to greet us. It's sad watching the ones that crib and kick their stall walls. You can clearly tell which ones get daily attention and which ones stay in their stalls for days.
As much as I love Southern CA, there is no available pasture here. So nearly all of the horses are stalled.
That's pretty sad...Horses are so sociable that such separation will very often bring that out. You're right... I've adopted a number of off track thoroughbreds with much the same behaviors. Exposure to a herd setting ALWAYS brought them out of it and the soft side appeared... And yes...we never allow them to back us up. I wonder what's going to happen to him... The aggression is more about pent up energy that's reverted to anger and sadness. He's truly depressed.
@DoubleDAppaloosas: You're the idiot. I suppose a 20 by 20 corral is gonna let the horse get pushed, fought with, and get to feel higher than another horse? Yeah right. Like Rick said in the video, just because the horse has someone stalled next to him doesn't mean its the same as being in a big pasture where he can be a horse. Your mare fights with geldings because you rush in the second you see her kick a horse, and they can't work it out. Anti-social my foot.
you know.. its not the OWNERS fault or the stall that is causing this! as you can see... he has a turn out.. which means he can mingle with horses next to him.. dont say you cant turn him out when the door is WIDE open for turn out.. some horses are anti social. my mare HATES geldings..(SHE IS NOT STALLED) you cant put her in a pasture with a gelding. he will get hurt or killed by her. stalls dont do this! idiots do this...
Horses are herd animals, They are not 'anti-social', it's humans who make them anti social by doing what we think is best, people like you, you may think that your mare is being 'anti-social', if you observe a herd, kicking behavior is a large part of the interaction, as that is how they suss out who is stronger and would make a good leader(essential for their survival if they were in the wild?)
Do your research before you believe you know everything. Its called ignorance.
We have 3 horses and 4 feeder cows in the same pasture the there's 2 geldings and 1 mare, the youngest gelding is 5 the oldest is 9 the mare's 6. The younger gelding won't go around the other gelding or the mare, he stays with the cows and buts heads and plays with them. My question is, is the younger gelding being ran out because it's the older geldings mare, or is this normal? thanks
OMG just watching the first few seconds of this breaks my heart...this is a horrible thing to have happen to this horse. I hope someone can give this horse another chance at a good life!
I love stalls. there a great place to keep tack and feed so the horses don't get at them. Any way thanks for these videos I refer people to them all the time. I don't pretend to be a trainer but have some beliefs on things like bits stalls blankets and you explain these things very well.
wonder how these horses survive in the wild without our help?
I leave my stable door open all the time, my mare never leaves XD I did it today without realising, her door was wide open for around 2hours and she was still in there.
It's horrible how some people treat horses however, any aggressive horses we have are normally rescue cases, I personally try to nip any sign of aggression in the bud, one of the geldings is quite aggressive, what sorts him out is if he bits you, you bite him back! He will never try bite you again!
me and the rest of Ireland then, very common practise I assure you, and no you don't take a massive chunk out of the horse you give him a nip just like he did and only if it's out of aggression, would you prefer someone to kick the horse in the stomach hard over a short and sweet nip? Pinching the horse would hurt him more, but biting asserts your dominance over the horse.
I have never bitten my own mare, she has only ever gone to bite me once (girth) a stern 'NO' stopped her
@ilovehasna : YOU don't bite horses, it is stupid and will get you hurt. If you want to be a horse then trade kicks with a horse and you will lose, trade bites and you will lose.
OF CORSE HE DID NOTHING!! Why would he? Thats just rude people can't just keep a horse in his stall and go of to college and think 'Oh my horse'll be alright he has friends and stuff and he can take care of himself.' WELL LADY!! Poor horse probably has to rashen water and food. Atleast tell someone to care for him or something.
I have a qustion if anyone can help well, theres a horse and when your trying to brush them in his stall he nips at you and he can easly buck you how do u get him to stop pinning his ears in a stall?
Pure bad management! Both the owner and the facility have a duty of care. This horse has too many stress related issues. ANd this video only adds to it. Horses are social beings and need company. Show a video about how you helped this horse. Better yet, get that owner arrested! Sorry I could not keep watching because it was bothering me. If you did assist his poor horse thank you very much! I really think you have skills and should let the horse have some outside freedom.
Just recently a horse picked me up by my shoulder with his mouth and throw me in his stall so I'm here with a broken radius + ulna in a cast. I approached this guy in his stall and he instantly pinned his ears and stepped into my space- I flicked my hands a few times and he shuffled away but still aggressive, so I decided to go around and leave but when I put my hand out to show where I was... so, if someone were to train him outside like u do what's stopping him from charging?
@WarhorseDestrier : Had you punched him and made it hurt and not just flicked your hand, he would have got the message and probably would not had bit you. If a horse pushes you push back harder. I am think you wished you corrected him harder and more aggressive for his dangerous behavior and then you would not have had to get bit. It think that is mean, then you will get bit again or be kicked. You have to sacrifice the relationship for safety, when you don't you teach the horse to hurt you.
@horseawareness ok, take my horse, my horse threatens, you punch her (hard mind you, as i used to do) she would twirl around and bite the crap out of you, if you ignore her she goes nuts...then calms down, sometimes whacking horses does not help since ignoring her she has improved heaps... sorry need to vent
@horseawareness you talk complete bull shit. you push a horse it will push back back harder. its the same with any animal. either your animals are seriously beaten or theyre terrified of you. either way its not a good situation for them to be in. you can easily have a good SAFE relationship with a horse by using a bit of common sense to discourage his bad habits without your methods. if following your suggestions were the only way to correct a horse id never buy one again
@horseawareness With the nurotic stallion I talked about in another message. We were trying to make him see that he doesn't have to be afraid of us. So we don't hit him, we have hit him once because he bit Lisa, and it wasn't his fualt she had to look down b/c she tripped and he grabbed her. But other than that we try not to corner him, and if he does start looking iiritated we just stand our ground and ignore him. But i agree, that hrose should have got a good crack in the jaw.
