@ATLHockey9 America is better than what ? This is a news programe from 15 years before you were born, muppet. but,FYI,america is slightly better than a septic hole in your big toe, thats about it...........
@rightfredsdead. Actually it was JC himself who played the bongos and whistle. He also knitted that yellow jumper from the bits of fluff stuck to the lemon drops he found under old peoples' beds when visiting them for charity. He personally instigated all the stories featured on newsround, e.g. invented fireworks, invaded the falklands. The only thing he didn't do was front the Goombay Dance Band (actually he did but disowned all knowledge of it after the failure of Indio Boy).
I know...terrible. From a round of new drinks to Newsround, *SNAP*, and a get your fucking screaming baby head back in there so she can keep up her pelvic thrusts...
Even as a kid I thought this version of the news was over santised and condescending. I learned far more from the real news and listening to my Da than this childish crap.
Remember the April Fools Day John Craven's Newsround when the panda story at the end was the brilliant news that London Zoo had finally managed to breed captive pandas? He sat there, straight faced, while he showed us the very rare panda egg! lol It must have been around this time... I was pretty young.
A lot of the Navy who got burnt only did so due to man-made fibres being used instead of cotton the uniforms got stuck to them. :( My stomach is turning writing this, but the truth always need to be heard.
Yes it was Tuesday 2nd of November 1982, As seen in the news clip, the day uk fourth television channel. Channel 4 took to the air. I remember coming home from school as a child and waiting for the television channel to start.
@TheScotty9646 thats interesting actually about the 4th channel. I remember it coming but could not remember when it was. wow. Cause we had to make do with 3 channels in those days and the kids now have so many channels are spoilt for choice.LOL
i was paid by the bbc to play the whistle at the end of this piece. i used a few milk bottles and had to wait for the bongos to fade out before playing. i was paid £25.
@DrHock i really did. i worked in bbc production from 1971-1982. you would be suprised at the improv people had to do back then. we couldnt find anything that was low enough. we tried pan pipes and so on, but in the end milk bottles with varying amounts of water had the right tone. i left the bbc after the royal wedding.
@rightfredsdead thats interesting actually to know. cause i used to watch this when I use to come home from school. £25 then was more money as to now is nothing really.
In it's original title of "John Craven's Newsround" (now called Newsround) its was the only News Broadcast in the world to be named after its presenter and it has been running on the BBC for over 30 years
The ideal behind this show was great. Now kids AND adults are just exposed to the same crappy newsertainment, with grown people watching Peter Andre and Jordan and shite like that.
Did anybody else notice that phone didn't ring, not once during all the years of John's broadcast! I bet it was just there for show, it probaly wasn't even connected!
@mistofoles ...it was the direct "nuclear-football" line to the guy in the bunker...WHO WAS READY to turn Russia/China into glass at John Craven's say-so.
I worked as an EETPU-certified electrician and rigger at the BBC from 1974 to 1986 and confirm that this is true. However, Craven couldn't launch a massive retaliatory strike without Philip Schofield, who would co-authenticate any launch orders and had the other missile key on a chain around his neck.
@mistofoles WRONG. My Dad worked for the beeb, and that phone was connected alright, but was only to be used in emergency to warn Mr Craven important of events like the death of a Blue Peter dog, Nuclear attack, stuff like that...
yeah but i think its better that way. even 'adult' news now is 60 second 'i can't sit still unless the presenter is either young or wacky ' news. Dumbing down of society. Taking things seriously might help calm down the young generation.
And yep i found it boring when i was a kid. but maybe thats the point.
Ah, Richard Noble! Not only DID he get the record, he was instrumental behind the team smashing it (and the sound barrier) a decade later! And I recently read he's currently working on an even faster car.
Yep, the new newsround talks down to kids. Softer than a pillow in a padded cell, but at least they have recently reinstated the old 70s/80s theme music (if modernised)! Been made redundant recently and finding myself cringing at practically every daytime programme!
The BSC's camapign was and still was always be rightous and valid.
How many eyes need to lost before the distribution of what is, after all, explosives, is restricted. Early Channel 4 was often unwatchable.Today's line up may not be any less so.
@1875HIBSFC yes but back then it covered real news stories in a way children would understand. Now they cover utter rubbish like "cheryl cole stubs her toe"
@1875HIBSFC this used to be on BBC1 about 5pm on weekdays, (there used to be children's programmes from 4.30 to 5.30 I think, remember there were only 3 TV channels then. I used to watch this when I came home from school, nearly 30 years ago now)
John Craven is a legend - and this was good sensible stuff for kids. The problem was that before 24 hour TV, Newsround usually usurped the adult news that was shown 30-60 mins later!!! JC usually did a few breaking news stories, I think famously the Challenger shuttle disaster!

Shame the children of this generation missed this version of newsround, i hate how newsround not patronises the audiance nowadays, but craven did not water it down of patronise, he did a good job.
Fantastic. I've just watched this full screen, took me right back to being 8 years old again. Used to watch this most days of the week unless there was something really good on ITV, though I wouldn't have seen this on the original air date (1982.11.02) and if you watch the newscast I'm sure you'll guess why...
